BM games
FTFY

I disagree with this. Not all BM games are bad.

True. The kind of BM games where BM means Black Market tend to be pretty good.

Today I bought for the first time Pages with no intention whatsoever to upgrade any to Champion. It was a +Buy-less board with Storyteller and Butcher.
My opponent went for Transmutes over Butcher, so I'll never know if my strategy was good.
I'm pretty sure I overgained Silvers, though.

I was going to post this on 'What I learned from Adventures online', but I think it is far more appropriate here.

Almost every time I use Dungeon online, I discard cards I want to play at the start of the next turn because I forget that it's there.

4P IRL. Plaza, Wandering Minstrel, Embassy, Journeyman in the kindgom... but no +buy. Played Smithy+BM and won. Yawn.

(Ok, fine, yes, I know. Don't even. Here, wait, let me go ahead and do it right now and save some space. The next reply will be "FTFY: 4P IRL, [strikethrough rest of message.] Just realize that not everyone hates 3-4P. First, I recommend using 16 Provinces in 4P to encourage engines with double-buy capacity [endorsed by Donald X here http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=15189.0.] Second, with an experienced playgroup, it's quite fast. Third, it's a different game with different strategic elements, and can be much less multi-solitaire-ish than 2P. Cursing isn't as automatic when taking the math into account that a player who ignores cursing to build gets an advantage over other players cursing each other. Figuring out if you should bother with Fool's Gold or other "win the split, win the game" cards in 4P is much trickier. Pins don't work. Counting points is harder. If anything, it's a more challenging variant than 2P. So enough hate.)

One time I played a 5p game with Masquerade, Margrave, and Urchin. It was a few players' first game. One of then almost won by going for Masterpiece.

In 4P games with new people, I like playing with cards like Bishop, Vault, Masq, or Messenger so I can basically give the other people some benefits.

(messengering everyone a Bishop in 4P is a great way to get everyone to thin decks!)

(sorry if this is too interesting)

Someone on Reddit was arguing with me that Potion isn't really very useful when there's only one potion cost card, pretty much regardless of what it was.

Eventually the arguement sorta ended. Both sides were civil throughout. It was fun.

Did you offer to play a Familiar (or Scrying Pool) Cage Match with him (no other Potion cards on the board) where he was not allowed to buy Potion?

But even without pulling out the powerhouses, there are a great many boards where restricting his access to Alchemist, University, Apothecary, or Vineyard (!) will give you an easy win just for the sheer effect of you being able to build an engine while he can't.  :)

You spike 7 first in a good Inheritance game, you just probably flat out win. Ironmonger is probably one of the very best Inheritance targets, though Highway is fantastic as well. I missed Highway in an Inheritance game, and a game where I was incredibly ahead was quickly blown because my opponent got to Inheritance.

Okay, it's not flat out winning to get three Ironmonger. It's an advantage, but I'd hardly compare getting Inheritance first to something like winning the Cultist / Ruins split or getting your King's Court and Mountebank to collide first. Highway is the exception to the rule here. It's certainly worth playing the rest of the game when this happens.

Don't forget though that when your Inherited Iron Mongers hit another Estate, that estate is now an Action Victory Card, so that Iron Monger was +2 cards, +2 actions.  These Ironmongers are not your average ironmongers.

This was a neat game where the only way to get +Actions was KC-Conspirator. So we both start buying treasures, since you need treasures to hit $7. My opponent tries to go for Pirate Ship, so I counter by trashing down to a 5 card deck. I then use Salvager to "Expand" my Chapel with the treasures I have left, bootstrapping to my first KC while keeping my deck size at 5 to deny any Pirate Ship tokens.

I left Copper in my hand and discarded good cards when my opponent played a Militia in order to play around Masquerade. When my opponent didn't have any Masquerades in his deck.

Too bad for them when it's a board with Alchemist and Stonemason!

I live with four others, all who like dominion to varying degrees, and still haven't convinced them to play 5P yet.

I guess that means you can only get a card up to $6, right? Ouch!

Sounds like Saboteur could be a reason not to go for Fortune.

You could get any card costing up to $6<8>, so also any of the other Debt cards if they are in the supply.

Why!?

Because it is cool to try terrible strategies sometimes, it makes you feel more important.
Here I thought that Transmute will multiply itself quickly by trashing Coppers,
so I can play Madman or two and trash some Transmutes using Royal Carriages maybe, gaining some Duchies, wreaking havoc

Was it a birth of a new brilliant strategy, an alchemic revolution in Dominion? no, not really
Was it interesting to try? yes, indeed

with no standard villages on the board, i put the +action token on band of misfits because i thought i could play disciple on it and gain more of them.  turns out disciple gains you the card band imitates, not band itself...so i ran out the cantrip pile and couldn't use band for that anymore!  somehow i still won, lol

It can be really bad to misclick and overpay for Stonemason by 2 coins instead of 3.

JW: turn 3
JW   plays 5 Copper
JW   buys Stonemason
JW   overpays for Stonemason with 2 coins
JW   gains Stonemason
JW   gains Stonemason
JW   gains Stonemason

I am playing a super boring Possession vs Bishop deck slog, with my opponent opting to pile out the Spies. I am the Possessor, so I should be losing this game in the super long term. I am on T27. There are so many insignificant Spy decisions to be made for my opponent every turn. I think I should resign.

Rumor has it, the Milton brothers saw one once.  In the woods behind farmer Clint's barn.  But Randy Milton was institutionalized that summer, and the pastor's daughter found Wyatt hanging from the town oak tree.  Some say the Transmute board, it... drove them mad.  Even tied Wyatt's noose right then and there in the grove for him.  No one ever dared talk about the Miltons or Transmute for that matter after that dreary summer.  Yep, lotta history in this town.

I played a game with Math today, where we both played some awful Mercenary-Fortress game, with just about nothing else in the Kingdom. The only draw was Gear. Obviously, you couldn't play BM because of Mercenary, but doing the Mercenary engine was just so much slower and terribly more unreliable than BM would ever be. I swear, someone opening Curse/Curse and then playing BM would have outraced the engine we were forced to build. It was a cluster of pain and misery.

I played a board with Possession, Outpost, and Mission, but my opponent resigned before anything fun happened.

I played a board with Black Market, Tournament, Knights, Young Witch, Hermit, Urchin, Page, Peasant, Ruins, Potions, Platina, Spoils, and Fairgrounds, but my opponent resigned before I could get any Fairgrounds.

I KC'ed a bunch of Possessions, but forgot I had just pinned my opponent into having no cards.

---------- Dingan: turn 9 ----------
Dingan - plays 3 Copper
Dingan - buys Borrow
Dingan - takes his -1 card penalty token
Dingan - buys Expedition

(Yes, that was basically a misclick, as I could have just bought the Expedition.)

Yah my plan was to get the junk dealer later on, but then I realised I just gonna 3 pile with IGG + Curse + Ruins, so there is no need for a "later" so I bought some green with spoils while he was busy junk dealing...

T1: Seprix plays 3 Coppers, buys Silver

T1: dominion cartel plays 2 Coppers

T2: Seprix plays 4 Coppers, buys Silver

T2: dominion cartel plays 5 Copper, buys Mountebank

Seprix resigns

If their Mountebank misses the shuffle at some point or collides with a future terminal, your position is equalized again. Don't resign so quickly.

Dominion carter is a well known serial slowroller. I'd resign as soon as I get matched with them. No point in wasting my leisure time like that.

Fair enough.

Why has no one banned them yet?

Wait, what's a serial slowroller?

Wait, what's a serial slowroller?

Someone who always plays really slowly (like one copper every few minutes) to get their opponent to resign. Basically why we need a blacklist function.

If you had $120, was it really necessary to pile the Silvers, or were you just showing off?

Here's to all the times Farming Village actually does something pretty good:

Turn 3 - ThetaSigma12
T plays a Farming Village.
T reveals a Copper and 2 Estates.
T puts a Copper into their hand.
T discards 2 Estates.
T plays 5 Coppers.
T buys and gains a Mountebank.

Discarding the Estates was nice, but otherwise, you were no better off than if you'd had a Silver in your hand.

That all of his Cultists are at the bottom of the shuffle and that now the Ruins pile is empty.

Ok, I can see that. But it assumes a lot of context (that the Ruins were given to him by his opponent during the current shuffle; that his deck is large enough that there's not a tiny number of cards in his discard pile, etc).

Well, if we assume the former, we can conclude that the latter is also the case — the top card of his discard pile is a Province, which means that he did not gain any Ruins after he ended his last turn, which means that any Ruins he was given that shuffle must have been before that turn, i.e. there must be at least 2 turns worth of cards in his discard pile, plus all the stuff he bought and all the Ruins he gained.

On completely unrelated note game where I had amazing shuflle luck.

As previous game its clear from board that its basically cultist-bm where we started greening as we bought golds, trainings and peddlers instead of cultists.

Obviously won't work if your opponent is contesting, but then again, if you need to contest a strategy to counter it, it's a breddy good strategy.

EDIT: Also, this was just my first try and I didn't think too hard, I'm sure you can do it way faster.

On completely unrelated note game where I had amazing shuflle luck.
<Screenshot>

As previous game its clear from board that its basically cultist-bm where we started greening as we bought golds, trainings and peddlers instead of cultists.

Where are the Cultists? You must mean Marauder BM. In that case, surely there must be something to do with that supply besides BM. Some piles look like they are partially emptied too.

Edit: looks like Awaclus ninja'd me with a demonstration of an engine here.

Edit 2: oh you are talking about the other game with a screenshot shown here. Carry on.

You don't think that strategy would be hindered by a junking attack? That's the reason to go for Rats in my joke post (and the Rats + Sentry nonterminal draw gimmick). Still probably better to skip it but it was fun to think about.

Just had my warrior trashed by my opponent's warrior for the first time. Later in the game, his warrior discarded my Champion. At least I only lost by 4 points.

The problem with trashing attacks is they can really knock you out of the game. I once had both my Cultists killed by back-to-back Knights. Not pretty.

I opened with double Mountebank, then lost the Curse split.

.
.
.

There was Ferry, Stonemason and Lost City. My opponent Ferried the Lost Cities and then bought one. I Ferried Mountebank T1, his T2 Lost City drew me a 5th Copper and I got two Mountebanks on T2. Then he blocked just about every attack after the second, got a pair of Mountebanks himself later (T8 or so) and proceeded to win the Curse split 7-3. No trashing on the board other than Stonemason.

I once had such bad luck with familiar that I lost the Curse split 10-0, then still won by a sneaky 3-pile.

A few days ago, I played an IRL game with a friend. I opened Ambassador/Ambassador. Turn 3 I bought another Ambassador (there was the event to turn attacks into Gold, so it seemed like a not terrible play. Turn 4 drew no Ambassador, not sure what I bought. Turn 5 I drew all three Ambassadors, with a Copper and Estate.

Despite that I still almost won - he had bad luck with his Ambassadors too, and if I'd played my final turn differently I think I would have narrowly won. Never give up.

T plays a Trader.
T trashes a Haunted Woods.
T gains 5 Silvers.
"Oh man this Conquest buy is gonna be so worth it"
T plays 2 Coppers and a Silver.
"...oh"

Same game, I bought Farmer's Market out of Black Market.  I need sleep.

I've had those games before. I remember an Inheritance game on mf where I finally hit $7... and bought an estate.

If it was the last turn, and he only had 1 buy, then the game would have ended before he could request an undo.

How has this incredible synergy been missed? This should easily push Ruined Village up the Qvist rankings of the ruins.

It has long been known that ruined village likes things that benefit from smaller hand sizes but i don't think a few synergies should change the perceived value of ruined village over the other ruins. (That said card rankings provide little strategic benefits anyways especially the ruins rankings.)

Secret Passage to Nowhere

Opponent opened Secret Passage on a 5-2 split. (There were several strong $5's available.) His next three buys were also Passages, even as I started to say, explicitly and repeatedly: "It's not really a cheap Lab." "It doesn't make your handsize bigger." "Dude, you are literally never going to get a better outcome than five Coppers." "YOU CANNOT BUY GOLD WITH THIS DECK."

And like finally it sunk in. "Oh. Because I have to put one BACK." (Which he had been doing, with prompting, every time.)

Not harmful like spamming Warehouse, probably not as common as Village Idiot, but is this a new trap?

Just had a ridiculous game (#3817959 on tokyo) with 5 potion cards (Transmute, Apothecary, Alchemist, Familiar, Possession), no Villages, no +Buy other than Seaway (which doesn't really work with ), and Steward.  Opponent went heavy on Familiars, and I opened Steward and spiked an early Possession.  Since I took all but one Curse (lucky Giant hit), my deck was crap, and a few times I was glad to be Possessed.  Meanwhile I was consistently grabbing Golds (for Palace) or even Provinces from his deck.  Ended up winning. :)

Alchemy cards are cool.  It's just that the potion cost makes them awkward.

Opponent tried to make a Mill/Watchtower disappearing money deck in a kingdom with no extra actions. Kept getting angry when drawing six cards with Watchtower and having most of them be dead action cards. Got a couple of Provinces anyway...but only when their hand started with the Necropolis in it.

Also, same game, same opponent ignored Cultist in a Wolf Den game. So I guess it doesn't really matter what they played.

I have another hilarious discussion.  Board was baker, steward, shanty town, millitia, port, wedding. Rest irrelevant. Game chat was quite hilarious.

Opponent doesn't understand that with double steward opening collision doesn't matter as best what you could buy when you trash is silver/shanty town if you spend baker token and thinks that double trashing is lucky.

LUCKYDUCKY:  luckier game for u
LUCKYDUCKY: i hate going 2d in attack games
LUCKYDUCKY:  its such an unfair element
LUCKYDUCKY:  100% luckier early game shuffle luck for u
LUCKYDUCKY:  so lame how big a factor that plays in winning
LUCKYDUCKY:  lost to shuffle luck
LUCKYDUCKY:  so lame
LUCKYDUCKY:  no skill needed luck fest for u lol
luser:  double steward had bigger impact
LUCKYDUCKY:  lol
LUCKYDUCKY:  luck tard
LUCKYDUCKY:  the odds of u getting them in same hand is pretty high
luser:  port/steward was stupid opening
LUCKYDUCKY:  we can go over the game log if u want and i can prove your shuffles were luckier no skill
LUCKYDUCKY:  lol
LUCKYDUCKY:  luck isnt skill man
luser:  but having 13 ranks more than you is skill
LUCKYDUCKY:  turn 3 for u: steward + 2 estates to trash..... turn 4:steward + final estate to trash
LUCKYDUCKY:  u went into your 2d shuffle of game with zero estates
LUCKYDUCKY:  luck tards are so dumb
LUCKYDUCKY:  lol luck tards are so dumb
LUCKYDUCKY: rating means nothing when u have a new account
LUCKYDUCKY: lol
LUCKYDUCKY: i wanted to change my name so i made this new account 2 weeks ago noob
LUCKYDUCKY: lol
LUCKYDUCKY: game log proves my point u r dumb kid lol
LUCKYDUCKY: so much ego
LUCKYDUCKY: lol
LUCKYDUCKY: game log just prooves my point
LUCKYDUCKY: learn what COMPOUND EFFECT means
LUCKYDUCKY: cuz its the reason ur 1st and 2d luckiest shuffles possible won u this game
LUCKYDUCKY: not skill
LUCKYDUCKY: not rating
LUCKYDUCKY: u r delusional lol
LUCKYDUCKY: luck tard

Crap, he is creating new accounts on the fly?  I wonder if you block someone and they open a new account, if the new account is still blocked.  It should be.

Also, don't feed the trolls, man.  The nature of his first 5 comments should be well enough to just ignore him.

Typically when you register or log in to an account on a website your IP address is recorded. It's not a perfect identifier (there are reasons why you might not have the same IP, or even similar IPs over time, and why two people might have the same one) but it can help administrators identify if some individuals are gaming the system through multiple accounts under the right circumstances. And there are other things that can be done to link potentially related accounts, especially if the person in question isn't bothering (or isn't smart enough) to hide their tracks.

That's basically the point of my (rhetorical) question. It's not as simple as same IP = same person. It's far more complicated than that. Even with a combination of IP and browser fingerprinting, it's still not good enough.

Right. You can use that information to investigate the possibility of an account being a duplicate of a previously banned account, but you can't use it to block a new account from being created.

(I think that's your point, anyway).

Dingan was talking not about banning accounts, but about personal blacklists. So populating people's blacklists by somehow detecting when someone on their blacklist makes a new account seems like a huge and unnecessary headache.

Donate-Knights-Rogue-Tomb match also deaturing Bridge, Moat, Walled Village, Oracle, Courtier and Workshop, making a very so-so engine with not a lot of actions for the amount of terminals you needed to play, after piles were low managed to win by killing half my deck and seting up for the following turn (though I took one turn longer than I should cause I forgot I had to pay off some of the debt...)

That's only nice if there aren't 2 cards you want. Still kind of funny.

I just realized that Farmer´s Market trashed itself when played for points, I was playing an treasureless (against Pirate Ship) engine based on Plaza, Wishing Well, Sentry and a lot of FM´s and suddenlly I start seeing that my Farmer´s Markets are disapering, and I start cursing myself for accidently trashing them with Sentry (I actually did that once in the midgame) and only at the end do I get to carefully read the card and see why there were 6 FMs on the trash... Still managed to squeeze a close win though... :P

I still forget this one occasionally. "Huh, I thought I had two Farmer's Markets..."

There was a board where the only cards that cost less than $5 were Silk Road and Cellar, so I opened Silver/Silver.

That opening isn't as common as it used to be, but is still a respectable move on weak boards or boards with dominant 5-costs.

Game #4769766

Just as an intense Vineyard rush was heating up, my opponent bid 40 on Mountain Pass.  I bought the remaining 6 Vineyards whilst they were still in debt.

EDIT: They ended the game still in debt  :'(

Was that an intentional bid or a misclick?

Probably intentional but due to a misunderstanding about how debt interacts with potion costs.

Don't build a deck that plays a bunch of Peddlers and then keeps some Peddlers in hand to trash with Ritual.

J buys a Ritual.
J gains a Curse.
J trashes a Peddler.

King's Court is great with Library. You'll draw one extra card because the King's Court is no longer in your hand.

I just played my first game where I was able to inherit a $5 card (Baker). Unfortunately, the game wasn't that great because my opponent was no challenge. (I'm pretty sure I ended up with all 8 colonies.)

I just played a game where I was doing a Procession-Merchant Guild thing, and my opponent was just playing money. On my final turn, I brought my score up to dead even by buying all 4 remaining Provinces, and had just enough money remaining for a single Estate.

Too bad there was Wall.

I actually did bid 40 in a governor game. My opponent openly mocked me in the chat. Then I won handily. It was uninteresting.

Cultist board with Forager.  Open 5/2, my opponent is 4/3.  Turns out Forager is really good at letting you play your starting Cultist a bunch of times.

Won Ruins split 8/2.  Opponent resigned.

Semi-Interesting Dominion Moments of 2016 Thread

This thread is gonna die.

lol this one kinda went i a coma.  This is the kind of dead thread I loving bumping anyway.

Anyways I was in a kind of shitty deck with stonemason and a lot of other crap (marauder and something else)

Anyway I were tied and I had all the castles except small and crumbling. I held 17 coins and was debating The 9 castle and a gold, or 2 provies, Instead i proceeded to three pile out the last 8 stonemasons, forgetting I didn't add right and couldn't get the one estate I needed.  So I piled out a decent game into a tie, from a position of strength, for what my opponent must've thought for seemingly no reason.I was so annoyed I didn't even ask to undo and rebuy, just ended it and left the room in shame.  Plus it was a really long game so the tie after all it was even more confusing and unsatisfying.  I blame the weed.  lol

Got hexed with War.  First card that was turned over was Faithful Hound.  Second card was Fortress, which got trashed, going straight into my hand.  Then the Faithful Hound also went into my hand with its reaction ability.  So, the hex basically just gave me +2 cards

I just dropped one of my two storage boxes. Thousands of cards, hundreds of dividers, everywhere. The schedule for tomorrow is several hours of sorting out cards and dividers. Sounds pretty uninteresting to me.

This suggestion is probably late to the party, but this sounds like an excellent opportunity for full-random Dominion, with fully randomized supply piles. You learn quickly that you must buy that Scout in order to uncover the Province hidden beneath. Meanwhile, you better not buy that Province lest your opponent buy the Vagrant underneath and end the game on piles.

My opponent used Ferry to put the -$2 token on Border Village.  In a game where there were no Action cards less than $4, so they ended up basically turning it into "gain a silver when you gain this".  Kinda defeats the point of BV

Potentially valuable if one of those actions is Tournament; otherwise, not so much.

At the end of a 15 turn game, Lord Rattington's deck consisted of 7 coppers, 12 silvers, 3 golds, and 3 estates.

Tomb and Sewers both appeared in the same game - one with no trashers of any kind

On a shelters board with Crown/Royal Carriage/Harvest as the only and Church as the only trasher, I opened Harvest/Cellar.

I didn't win.

League of Bankers as the Ally, but the only Liaison was Student. That proved way too slow to be useful, and even if the game had lasted long enough to trash all the starting Coppers, that would've still only been +$2. Sadly, it seems that bankers don't much like students

I saw Royal Galley and Goons in the same kingdom and thought it was going to be a really strong combo. I forgot that on its first play, Royal Galley sets the card it's playing aside, so the +VP bonus only comes on the second play. So, it turned out not to be as strong as I was hoping (although the discard attack happening twice is still good). Indeed, in general, Royal Galley doesn't play well with cards that have while in play effects

Another Royal Galley goof. I used Royal Galley on Highway, forgetting that, being set aside, it wouldn't give me the cost-reduction on the turn I played it, leaving me with only $7 and no cost reduction with one last Province in the kingdom going into my buy phase. Gotta remember that while-in-play effects don't work on the turn you Royal Galley a card

I got lucky any my opponent was unable to buy that Province on their turn, so I was able to snatch it up on my next turn, so it worked out in the end

Is this near the end of a game with Tomb or you just wanted to troll yourself?

I didn’t do this, no. I thought there was a “nombo” thread somewhere, which I would have posted to instead. It’s either in a separate section of the forums, or more than a couple of years buried since it was last active. Or I just missed it …

Had a game with Tireless Landing Party

To clarify, is Landing Party simply never discarded from play no matter what?

I think that's correct. Coincidentally, Reckless Landing Party seems amazing.
