Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Village
« on: April 18, 2016, 02:55:27 pm »

I think I'm going to do two cards a day. There are just so many blah cards in Dominion on their own, the real fun is with the combos. Take Village and Throne Room for example. Perfectly fine cards, but when discussed in a vacuum, meh.

-Is $3 worth an extra Action?
-Best art in all of Dominion?

I dunno. Hamlet would then possibly be worth $1?

I really like Village. It's the only drawing village for three. (right? -Shanty doesn't count.) Three vs four might be a small difference, but it happens often that you have a 3c hand after the first shuffle and you need that 4c village and end up buying a questionable Silver and are just left longing for good old vanilla Village.

Omg I just realized Pillage is 1 letter away from Village, and that the village they're pillaging in Pillage is the same village as in Village!

Why doesn't village cost 2?

It would be too easy for either player to win the Village split by a lot. Costing 3 is probably more balanced.

Hamlet is fine at 2$ and not strictly worse than village

Well there's only 3 more base set cards to go by my count. And I doubt anyone will have anything to say about Woodcutter. Could probably do those all in one day.

Village is one of the most iconic cards in Dominion. While it gets overshadowed by other villages which combine nice effects, sometimes all you want is +1 Card, +2 Actions. Also, it is useful for teaching the basics of engine building (Village/Smithy).

I think Hunting Party and Haunted Woods and some other cards have a lot better art, though.

When I started playing, this was my favorite card. Yes, I was a village idiot for a long time.

People tell me one of the problems with Scout is that Scout BM is apparently worse than straight BM.

I look at Village then look back at them.

this is one of three villages that costs 3. fishing village is clearly super strong but still doesn't draw when you play it; shanty town is not necessarily bad but it sort of falls on its face in the proverbial village-smithy situation. village looks lame but is a powerhouse while not in a vacuum.

village and smithy are both very odd in the sense that they are both on the cheap end of a spectrum. whereas pretty much all of the variants add something not related to the drawing process, village and smithy just bring in as many cards as they're worth. this qualifies them to be aesthetically fitting for the base set, they are still very fit for the expanded universe: whereas something like city/rabble forces one to adapt to a game where greening is more (!) baneful and village is expensive but suddenly becomes better at some variable point in the game, village/smithy puts more emphasis on the not-village-or-smithy, and there are a lot of those things now.

2 villages at $6 +buy is pretty good.

Village is well priced at 3$. In fact, when I need a Village or several, I'm more than willing to pay 4$ for it (such as e.g. Framing Village after I've trashed all the green, Walled Village when I0m sure I'll play 3 or more actions this turn etc.).

People tell me one of the problems with Scout is that Scout BM is apparently worse than straight BM.

I look at Village then look back at them.
Village is cheaper and, unlike Scout, is assured to draw you a card.
