When I get back from being out of town in a week, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in playing this with pictures instead of words.  I could always upload a picture of the grid (I have the game at home) if there isn't anything online.  Then the spymasters could generate a grid for it saying whose pictures are whose.

I would play if there is room. I'd prefer the word version, but would be play either one.

Have you played the picture version?

Once, in person, and this was a while back. Maybe it's the way my brain works, but it didn't feel like you got to be that creative in that game. The given pictures might have been too easy, I don't remember exactly. I just remember we only played that once and switched back to the word version after.

I read that as "Once, in prison" the first read through.  I have found that pictures is a lot more difficult to come up with linking connections than words.  They definitely feel like different games

I'd love to start with 6+ in order to have discussions between agents.

If we have Watno, Mr Rudd,  ipofanes, gkrieg, myself and ghostofmars, that'd make six.

I'm not really available until Tuesday.
If we go for more than 4 players, I'd strongly prefer discussion between teammates to be in spoiler tags with the spymasters not being allowed to read them.

I strongly prefer the word version to the picture version.

Centuries later, archaeologists discover the remains of your ancient civilization.

Evidence of thriving towns, Pottery, roads, and a centralized government amaze the startled scientists.

Finally, they come upon a stone tablet, which contains but one mysterious phrase!

'ISOTROPIC WILL RETURN!'

That'd be a nice variant from the standard game, plus the delayed frustration for spymaster after the fact promises some hilarity.

why shouldn't the spymasters be allowed to see the discussion? i've only played codenames in person (words version) with more than two people per team, and it works fine

I expect a counterfactual discussion among spies ("if he wanted tit excluded, he'd given Mammals 3 and not Animals 3"), and there's a fine line between that kind of discussion and "well, if he really wanted us to pick pot, golf, and nail, he'd surely had given Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious 3". I am not in the strongly preferrence camp but I can see the point.

I think it's also undesirable to have simply have something like playesr choosing between two options, and thus telling the spymaster what their next guess will be.
