What happens if I counterfeit a coin of the realm? Do you play it twice and not trash it or do you play it once and not trash it. WHen does the lose track rule apply?

You play it, getting $1 and putting it on your Tavern mat. You play it again, once more getting $1. It tries to put itself on your Tavern mat but has lost track of itself, so it stays on your Tavern mat. Then you try to trash it but Counterfeit has lost track of it.

As explained above, you don't. The second attempt to put it on the mat fails due to lost track.

I am looking at Adventures; tentatively I'm sticking with Rats.

I think my favourite Counterfeit combo is Counterfeit-Horn of Plenty, gaining first a Mandarin and then an Inn. Now there's a lose-track scenario for you.
