I just did some simple maths. There are 3,883 registered accounts for f.ds. Now, I know some people have multiple accounts, and many accounts posted less than 10 times and haven't logged on since 2014. About how many active members (people who come onto the forum maybe 3 times a week) do you think there are? The community seems quite small to me, like maybe less than 200 small! Can anyone make a halfway educated estimate?

You can go to the listing, sorted by post counts and then pick a cut-off point.  You can also check their individual profiles to see the last time they were active or posted something, if you want to remove people who used to be very active but are no longer around.  This methodology isn't perfect because there are certainly community members who don't post much, and also some members who post mostly in Forum Games, such that their posts don't count towards their total.

That would be an estimate for the number of members who post (semi-)actively, right?

The OP talked about people who visit the forums regularly, and I would guess a lot of people do so even though they never post anything. Estimating the number of those users is rather hard, but they definitely exist, potentially in fairly large numbers. I could well belong to that group as well; I might go weeks or months without posting but I still visit the forums several times a week.

You might be able to put something up somewhere like https://strawpoll.me/ that would create a really easy place to provide an answer that even forum lurkers would be able to provide a response. The easier it is to answer, the higher percentage of response you can expect.

If you really want a solid response rate, you probably want to make a new thread (possibly in more than one of the most active boards).  There are probably plenty of people who have read some of the posts in this thread and already decided to ignore it.
