Dominion One-Liners

Here's an idea:
Post a 1-sentence factoid about Dominion that in some way helps a new or intermediate player get better at the game.  It need not be backed up by data, or even be correct.  Just something that you've learned over time through experience or whatever.  So for example: boards with Stonemason tend to end in 3-piles. Or: Silvers are less valuable in Colony games.  Like I said, they might be completely wrong.  The point is, they are your experience, your interpretation, short, and to-the-point.  So pretty much the only requirement is keep the factoid to 1 sentence.

I'll periodically move the best / most-interesting / non-obvious factoids into the OP, so it's easy for someone to see them all in 1 place.

Villages are useful, but they are not a strategy by themselves.

Something like that? Or something a bit less obvious?

I'll get things started.

- Scrying Pool is awesome, except when there is no source of +buy / additional gaining.
- Rebuild is like the dumbest card ever, but should almost always be bought as early as possible.
- In Cultist boards, I usually open Silver / Silver so that I can buy one on T3 or T4.
- Moats are twice as good in 3-player games as they are in 2-player games.
- Most Knights don't actually give you anything right now -- so you will need some sort of additional payload if using them.
- Some piles pretty much never ever empty: Chapel, Jack of all Trades, Cutpurse, Outpost, etc.; while others very often empty: Herald, Grand Market, Peddler, etc.

I think I disagree on both counts. Most Knights do give you something right now, the only exceptions I can think of being Sir Vander and Dame Josephine. And while you eventually need payload, winning the Knight split can often take priority.

Definitely, winning the Knight split is often very crucial.  I guess what I meant was that I've run in to situations where I have a thin deck that consists only of Knights and maybe a couple Villages or whatever.  But then I won't actually be able to afford anything right now.  Of course, this can be a good thing; but in some situations I've seen it be terrible.

If you can gain it, you might not want to buy it.

With Doctor, opening 4/3 > opening 3/4 (I'm not sure where 5/2 or 2/5 would go).

This is great advice, especially for Treasure gainers. If you've got a Soothsayer pumping Gold into your deck, you should probably only be buying Action cards.

The point of the game is not so much to score the most points before the game ends, but more to end the game whilst you have the most points.

Build, build, build your deck, greening is a sin; shuffling, shuffling, shuffling, shuffling, next turn you will win.

^^ Message of the week, right there.

If you're ever thinking about doing something fun in a Cultist game, just don't do it, then you win more.
Thinning is winning.
You need a really compelling reason to not open with Jack.
Don't click "Play All Treasures" in a Farmland game.

It's never too late for a Watchtower.
Watch the piles.
Think twice before triggering a shuffle, then trigger it anyway.

Err on the side of trashing too much.

Multiplayer game with Torturer is...a brutal torture.

Chapel is the best card at getting bad cards out of your deck as quickly as possible (pretty lame, but very true).

Doctor trashes 3 cards at once (which is the maximum). If you overpay for it, it's in a different price range. Chapel's low price also makes it super good.

Well, you said as quick as possible. Doctor can trash Turn1, Chapel at most at turn 2 with a few events. So Doctor is quicker :)

Gear.

Uhh, I think no? I mean, almost any $3 card isn't going to qualify here because you can open with it AND Jack, which in Gear's case isn't terrible. If you can't open like this then you have a 5/2, which qualifies as a compelling reason.

So $4 cards that fit this description. A complete list?

Remake (sometimes).

Leave it to F.DS to take a piece of actually good advice, twist it to mean something it didn't mean, and then discuss related edge cases, pulling this thread into a tangent completely unrelated to its original purpose.

<3 <3 <3

Ahem. Back to the other thing now.

Great value can be achieved by overdrawing your deck on a board with mid-turn gain-and-play shenanigans.

Then opening Farmland with a Baker token is fastest as well. Yay!
