3 Provinces, X Cards

Let X = 2 to 4.

Using X different cards played this turn (no Durations from last turn), find a way to gain 3 Provinces on your turn, played by yourself (no Possession).

There are no cards in your deck or your draw pile; your hand consists of just X cards with different names.

I know of one solution with 2 cards and multiple with 4 cards, can you think of one which uses 3 different cards?

The 2-card solution is obv KC-Masquerade, but you have to either trash or pass back the Provinces, so you didn't actually gain them (no reaction is possible to Masquerade as well). You should focus on the 4 cards. :)

A 4-card solution:

TR-KC-Bridge-Feast

Working on more. I like this, it's harder than you first think.

Is this solo game or can we assume what the opponent is doing/has done/will do? I am considering Smugglers shenanigans Although I haven't got a working solution with it yet...

Actually...

If this is allowed, another 4-card solution is:

Your favourite Village-Princess-KC-Smugglers
or
TR-KC-Princess/Bridge-Smugglers

Yes to all. You can make assumptions about opponents.

TR-KC-IW-Tribute
IW gains 3xbridges
Tribute discards 3x (Harem,Copper)
play three bridges

replacing IW with University would work, too

Are you allowed to gain cards which you then play in the same turn? I assumed not because we are told to gain three Provinces "Using X different cards played this turn" where X = 2 to 4 = the number of cards you start with in hand. If you gain cards and then play them, you are playing more than X cards.

Also, minor nitpick about the OP edit: You don't officially "gain" the Provinces through Masquerade, whether or not you can actually keep them. You can't, for example, reveal Watchtower or Trader in reaction to it.

This is not a puzzle with a clear intended solution, so I don't mind if you get creative and bend the rules a little.

I'll phrase it as: Start with 4 different cards in hand, gain 3 Provinces.

Does the obvious KC-KC-Bridge-Bridge not work? By my count it gives you 6 plays of Bridge for +$6 and all costs reduced by $6. Thus you can by 3 $2 Provinces.

Your X cards have to be differently named.

A funky one to do it with 3 cards is
Play Possession, on your opponent's turn (played by you) play KC-Ambassador, revealing 3 Provinces

I know I said "no Possession", but I meant that it's your turn and you yourself are not possessed at the moment.

I don't think this one works.

So you gain the 3 bridges with IW or University...

But you need need to draw them into your hand and then have the actions to play them.

So from your tribute you'll need to gain +3 Actions and +3 cards to play the bridges.

Best I can figure is you have $4 from Tribute and $3 from Bridges with Provinces costing $5.

Unless I'm not seeing something correctly.

4 Card Solution:
Throne Room (TR), King's Court (KC), Noble Brigand (NB), Grand Market (GM

TR the KC.  Play NB 3 times gaining 3 gold (lucky).  Play GM 3 times drawing the 3 golds into hand.

NB = $3
GM = $6
Gold = $9

3 Provinces with $18?

Unless I'm not seeing something correctly.
Harem is a dualtype (Treasure - Victory), if you reveal it with Tribute, you get both the $2 and the 2 cards. You might have wondered why Harem was used instead of any other Treasure card and this is why.

The KC'd Tributes net $12 and with 3 Bridges you get to $15, enough for 3 Provinces worth $5 each.

Nice! Thanks for explanation. Forgot about dual types And you get the +Actions from IW which I also missed.

Ug.  Was thinking $6 instead of $8. :(

In two:
KC -> Trade Route [In a game with Estate, Dutchy, Provence, Colony, Nobles, Harem, Gardens, Tunnel, Silk Road

In four:
TR -> Highway, KC -> Bridge

In two:
Similar to the earlier solutions but without king's court. Throne Room-trade route with harem, vineyard, gardens, silk road, great hall, tunnel, island, duke, trade route, throne room, estate, colony, duchy, province, with 12 trade route tokens on the trade route board for a +24$ and total of 3 buys.

Might be considered slightly cheating, but I believe this works for 3 cards:
TR ->KC -> Trade Route [In a game with Estate, Duchy, Province, Colony, Nobles, Harem, Gardens, Tunnel, Silk Road]

Obviously, this is just Biderman's solution but with a useless Throne Room at the start. Still, it works. Now, doing it without a useless card might be a littler trickier.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

I only found a solution for 4 Cards:

play TR-KC-Bridge-IW
gain Nobles, draw it immediately, gain KC, gain Bridge or Feast
play Nobles-KC-Bridge or Feast

Solution with 3 cards not using trade route:

(requires: good shuffle luck & an outpost turn)

University/KC/governor
University (gain an outpost) -> KC/governor (gain 2 gold & draw them with an outpost) -> outpost. Buy a border village & a council room.

Outpost turn:
university/council room/KC
University (whatever) -> council room (draw a BV, governor, and 2 golds) -> KC/governor (remodel 2 golds & a border village into provinces).

A 4 card solution of TR-KC-Princess-Feast will net 3 Colonies and a Duchy without assuming anything about the opponent, mats and tokens, e.g. with Pirate Ship or Trade Route.
