Renovate: an Ironworks/Remodel variant

Renovate Action $4

You may trash a card from your hand. If it is an . . .

Action card: +1 Action
Treasure card: +$1
Victory card: +1 Card

You may gain a card costing up to $1 more than the trashed card.

==================

If you play this to turn your Estates into Silvers or to trash your Coppers, it's terminal. But you can use it as an Upgrade on Action cards later in the game, once you've cleaned out your junk.

This is a simple idea; it's probably already been done, although I haven't seen it. But if not, is this 1) worth trying; 2) undercosted; or 3) overpowered at $4 or underpowered at $5?

I was also thinking of trying this as a Transmute variant, in which you had to gain a card of a different type, but that would probably be not much better than Transmute and would be much more complex.

It's very similar to my Iron Furnace card from Resurgence:
Quote
Iron Furnace
Cost 2  - Action
Reveal a card from your hand. If it's an action, play it. If it's a ruins, play it again. If it's a treasure, +$2. If it's a victory card, +2 cards. In any case, trash the revealed card.
I've played with it several times, and it's a good card. But it costs $2. $4 is too much.
I originally had something more similar to your version with +$1 and +1 Card, but LastFootnote pointed out -and testing proved him right- that it was weak even for a $2 cost card.

Sure, but Iron Furnace isn't a gainer. Did you catch that part?

Ohhhhh. I did miss that part, sorry. It still looks a little on the weak side. Maybe it should cost $3?  (compare to Develop which can gain two cards.)

I'm trying to imagine when I'd use this. Obviously it's a fine Estate trasher; maybe even a great one. But it's pretty bad at trashing Coppers and I'm not sure how often I'd really use it to upgrade Action cards.

I think it's worth testing. I'd start it at $2, though.

I think it is situationally good as a late card and I would prefer Remodel over this. Double the trashing benefits and price it $5 would make it usable more often imo.
If this card is intended to be an opening card, every other $4 opening trasher does it better. I suggested the price to be lowered in that case.
