Need ideas for Hitchhiker's theme
« on: July 17, 2015, 08:47:20 am »

Since my wife turns 42 this weekend I want to get a cake with a Hitchhiker's theme. I wanted the cake to have the little green guy with its tongue sticking out, but copyright law prohibits the bakers from reproducing that image, so I need something more accessible. Keeping in mind that she's not an avid fan, I'm not going to have a particularly obscure reference like a mattress in a swamp. I may consider either a towel or an extended thumb.

Any other Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy concepts that could go on a cake?

A Whale shaped cake! Then you drop it.

Dark chocolate cake with very smooth black frosting and black decorations.  Instead of candles, launch it into the Sun.

A babelfish?

I was sorely tempted, but I don't know that I can trust a bakery to pull that off. I have to assume the decorator knows nothing of the books. And I really don't want to try to explain: Okay, it's a fish, but make the nose look like something that can fit in an ear and attach, kind of like a lamprey; oh and it should emit psychic waves. I fear what I would get.

Buy some green icing, buy some black icing, draw it yourself?

The Hitchhiker's guide itself? (so it has Don't Panic written on it)

I may actually go that route. It's simple enough. While I'm sure the decorator is skilled enough to draw a hitchhiking thumb, there are so many ways that it can look like the wrong appendage. I'm not opposed to giving my wife a pornographic cake, but I do want to focus on her being 42. That only happens once unless you're a liar.

But a book-like device with "DON'T PANIC" would be fitting. I may actually see about having a towel with those words (according to Google, towels like this exist, which is awesome).

Yeah, I'd go either with a towel that says "DON'T PANIC" or just the words right on the cake.

Having a towel on a space background with "DON'T PANIC" on it was a hit. Everyone loved the cake.

As an added bonus, despite me not telling the cake decorator my wife's age, she wrote 42s all along the icing at the bottom of the cake. Total geek win. I would recommend this place.

Wow, a hip cakemaker.  And until this last post, I completely forgot about the 42 thing, even though you wrote about it in the OP.

I guess dolphins would have been an option, now that I think about it.  You could have made the cake out of fish, but "so long" would have maybe sent the wrong message.
