Attention potential Forum Survivor Season 3:
We would like you to submit an audition tape for review prior to your participation in this season of Forum Survivor*. "But AHoppy," you say, "I don't want you creeps to see my face or hear my voice." Never fear! You are allowed to submit this audition "tape" in any format you wish! Whether it's a video, creative writing, interpretive dance, original artwork, whatever you feel moved to submit. Just make sure you answer the following question:

What makes you a true Survivor?

I'm giving you guys a lot of time to work on this, so I want some really good stuff. Just submit your work via PM to me

*Submission of audition tape is not required, but strongly strongly** encouraged. Even if all you do is a sentence. All content submitted for audition tape becomes property of the Forum Survivor season 3 mods which they are free to distribute on the Dominion Strategy Forum (probably not until the season is over). All material will be kept to this thread in the forum games forum so it will not be accessible by the general public.

RULES OF THE GAME
Everyone playing should have already received a survey in a QuickTopic known as your confessional. This is where you can post anything you want. The more you talk here, the more interesting it is for moderators and spectators, and it’s a good place to collect your thoughts. There is no restriction on when or how many times you can post here. This is also the place to give me feedback on the game. I welcome any and all feedback and I promise I won’t bite. I will be monitoring these threads (I have email notifications on for them) so this is the best way to reach me.

Additionally, each tribe will receive a QT including everyone in the tribe. This is where you will be performing many challenges and any discussions with your whole tribe. There may or may not be restrictions in posting here, depending on what is going on in the game
You will also receive a QT with each individual on your tribe. Again, there may or may not be posting restrictions here depending on what is going on.

Some requests I have: There will probably be challenges that involve puzzles or games or other googleable things. I would like to ask that you refrain from googling solutions to puzzles or strategies for games And really, this is why you’re playing the game right? To play fun games and solve hard puzzles. I appreciate how trusting this community can be, let’s keep it that way.

Finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for: We have a new and (hopefully) improved energy mechanic!

ENERGY
How this works: Energy is a percentage. Everyone starts with 100% energy because you have all just gotten off the boat on this desert island, excited for the intense journey ahead of you. Energy will be able to be spent on challenges for some benefits. The Catch: Everyone loses some amount of energy by participating in challenges. At the beginning of a challenge I will tell you how much energy you will be losing. eg. you’ll lose 10% points in this challenge. This is not a multiplication, just a subtraction. So if you’re at 100%, you’ll be down to 90%. If you’re at 90%, you’ll be down to 80%.

MORALE
More new stuff! While everyone has their own individual energy totals, we have a new tribe-wide mechanic this time around called Morale. This might get a bit complicated, but you guys are all smart, so I think you guys can handle it. Your team’s morale is based on a scale from -50% to +50%. RIght now, you guys are pretty unsure about each other and pretty wary already, so your morale is at 0% right now. Things that will improve your morale: Winning rewards challenges, getting fire, building shelter, etc. Things that will make your tribe in general happier. Things that degrade your morale: Losing challenges, blindsides at tribal council, low tribe energy levels, etc.

Now I’m sure you’re all asking “what does this crazy tribe morale mechanic actually do?” Morale is a whole tribe attribute that modifies all individual energy gains and losses. The formula for this is (energy change + |energy change| * (morale-as-decimal)) So, using the example above, say your tribe’s morale is at -30%. When you lose 10 energy after the challenge, instead you lose 13 energy! (-10 + |-10| * -.3 = -13). Say the other tribe is at their max morale, +50%, instead they lose 5 energy (-10 + |-10| * .5 = -5). For gaining energy, the tribe at morale of -30%, gaining 10 energy, instead they only gain 7 (10 + |10| * -.3 = 7), whereas the tribe at +50% morale would gain 15 energy! (10 + |10| * .5 = 15). I hope all of that made sense. Any rounding will be done in your favor.

To echo this, the more people we have recruiting and getting others to join the game, the bigger of a turnout we'll have, and this type of thing plays really well with more people.

Yeah the mod does a lot of recruiting but that doesn't mean we can't too. I should put a link in my signature or something. Yeah.

...and to be honest, I found that last season most of the recruiting I did before ~3-4 days before the game started wasn't nearly as effective anyways

This is my first forum game and I know nothing and have never watched survivor. Can someone PM me with some advice on what I am getting into?

Here are some quick links I can give you to last season where similar things were asked pre-season:

Basic strategy queston with some helpful links to maybe answer.

Episode Summaries doc from last season, maybe this will help out? It's a birds-eye view of how last season played out, to sort of give you an example of one way things can go. Of course, a lot will be different this season, I'm sure.

I can PM you with more details if you want, but AHoppy might be better for that just because he's moderating this season. I'll do a lot better answering specific questions for you because I can point to things that have happened on the CBS show or the first two seasons of Forum Survivor. Also, Survivor 31 premieres tonight, so watching this season may also help you, many past seasons are available for free (with commercials) from CBS's website, at least for the USA.

That reminds me, if this thing will start in a week, I might want a confessional soon so I can dump my pre-season thoughts.

The winner of the game is called the "sole survivor" -- I believe that's the reference. It reminds me a lot of the prompts they give you for the audition videos.

Re: audition tape - Adam got the reference, but really it's all up to you. The more creative it is, the more fun it will be, interperet it how you may. But they will have an effect on the game.

Brief run-down of how things work, it's pretty general since a lot of things change from season to season (and players usually aren't told about it in advance).

We start out divided into tribes, usually two of them but sometimes more. Tribes compete in challenges for rewards and for immunity -- the actual game takes place on a deserted island, so rewards are things like food, blankets, tarps, stuff like that; the forum game has different types of rewards. Immunity challenges are where one tribe will "lose" the challenge and have to go to Tribal Council.

At Tribal Council, everyone in the tribe casts a vote for someone to boot (can't vote for yourself). The person with the most votes is eliminated from the game.

At some point, all the tribes will merge into one tribe; at this point, challenges become individual challenges (though some reward challenges will be played in teams, or the winner of the reward can pick some other people to share the reward with them). During the tribal phase, only the people on the losing tribe go to Tribal Council and vote, but after the merge, everyone votes, including the person with immunity. You just can't vote for the person with immunity. Still, most votes is eliminated.

At some point, eliminated players will no longer be completely out of the game, but instead they will join the jury -- they aren't eligible to win the game anymore, but they are the ones who will eventually determine the winner.

At some point, usually when there are 2 or 3 people left, we stop voting people out of the game, and instead have Final Tribal Council. This is where the jury addresses the finalists and will vote for a winner -- the most jury votes will win the game and become Sole Survivor.

Those are the rules, they are pretty simple: you can use whatever criteria you want for casting your votes (and your jury votes), but on the show people quickly realized that they need to form alliances with other people to get a majority of the votes on their tribe, otherwise they end up getting voted off. So a lot of the game takes place in QTs with various combinations of people in order to form alliances, but even if that alliance makes it all the way and votes everybody off, eventually they have to turn on each other because there can only be one winner.

There are many ways to play the game, and people have had success with all of them on the show: you can play a physical game and just try to win all of the challenges. You can play a strategic game and form lots of alliances to keep the votes off of you. You can play a social game and just befriend everyone so they don't want to vote you off.

In a forum setting, the challenges are a little different than on the show, but many people have said that the challenges are their favorite part of the game. You can check out last season's OP for links to all of the challenges that were done last season.

Time commitment? Forum Survivor is a game that gives back what you put into it: if you want to, you can spend hours every day playing the game and have tons of fun doing it. If you don't have that kind of time, checking in once per day is plenty to do everything you need to do, and V/LA is pretty much always fine as long as the mod knows about it, especially early on in the game when you can just sit people out of challenges if necessary.

The last two seasons took about nine months from start to finish. Yeah that's a long time but most people didn't end up playing the game for that long, as people are eliminated throughout the game. In both seasons, we've had people who wanted to bow out because something came up and they didn't have the time, or it turns out they weren't having too much fun: that's totally OK and easy to deal with (as long as you are open about it with the mod).

I tried playing a forum game a long time ago and it wasn't really my thing, but I can't get enough of Forum Survivor. It's certainly a different experience, and in my mind it's a way better one. Hopefully you decide to give it a shot

F14 REWARD/IMMUNITY 2R1B
Energy Cost: 20
THE BASICS:
2 teams, Red & Blue, blue has president, red has the bomber. There will be 5 rounds, the first and second rounds will last 3 days, the third and fourth will last 2 days, and the last will last 1 day. So in all, this challenge will last 11 days.

You have all been assigned a role (as detailed below) and then randomly split into 2 rooms. You will be able to post freely in your room’s thread, but won’t be able to see the other room’s thread. I will also be giving you a QT with every other person in your room. You can use these to “whisper” to the other players in your room. However, when you do this, you must post in bold in the room thread “(whisper with xxxxx)” where xxxx is the person you’re whispering to. If the other person decides to respond, they make the same post in the room thread. You only have to do this once per round for that person. but if you talk 1-on-1 with another person, you have to do it again. If you fail to do this, you get punished (see below)

SHARING AND SHOWING
Now onto what make 2R1B kinda unique: You can share information about your card with anyone. There are 2 ways of sharing information: Sharing and showing. There are 2 pieces of information you can share: your color, or your entire card.
Sharing - Mutual agreement between two individuals to share their color/whole card. So both people share the same information with each other. So you have to propose the share, the other person has to agree, then in your private QT, you both have to share the agreed upon information. If you you fail to share the information once you’ve agreed to share it, your team automatically loses (harsh, but hey, it’s a pretty big deal…)
Showing - does not require consent or reciprocation
Any time you share information, if it’s in bold, it must be true. You can say whatever you want to people if it’s not bold, but when you write anything in bold, it’s the equivalent of showing a physical card or part of your card to the other person, so you can’t lie about it. If you lie in bold, you get punished (see below)

ROUNDS
How a round actually works: Once the round starts, you have the allotted timeframe to elect a leader for the room. Votes are bolded, the look like Vote: sudgy (you mafia guys get it). Once someone has received a majority of votes in the room, they become the leader for the room. The leader must have a list of the people they play on sending to the other room (they can keep this in their confessional). At the end of the round, those players will be sent to the other room. The leader can be usurped at any time by receiving a majority of votes. The only way for the leader to be sent to the other room is for the leader to hand leadership to someone else, and that person has to choose to send the leader. But they don’t have to. They can send whoever they want.

The rounds:
1 - 3 days, 3 hostages
2 - 3 days, 2 hostages
3 - 2 days, 2 hostages
4 - 2 days, 1 hostage
5 - 1 day, 1 hostage

ROLES:
The numbers in the parentheses represent the number of copies of that card in the game, so the number of people who have that role
President (1) - Don’t be in the same room as the bomber at the end of the game

Bomber (1) - Be in the same room as the president at the end of the game

Red Team (3)/Blue Team (3) - No special roles, just loyal to their respective color

Red Spy (1)/Blue Spy (1) - You’re on one team, but when you color share, you’re on the other team. So if you’re the Blue Spy, when you color share with someone, you tell them you’re Red.

Red Agent (1)/Blue Agent (1) - Once per round, force someone to private share with you. So you have to show them your card privately to prove you’re an agent, then they have to show you their card.

Red Coy Boy (1)/Blue Coy Boy (1) - You can only color share, you can’t card share

Drunk - There are 15 cards instead of 14 (because there are 14 players), this means 1 card is left out. At the beginning of the last round, you “sober up” and get the buried card

PUNISHMENTS
If you screw up, you lose energy. Except as mentioned above. Every time you don’t post that you’re whispering, etc. you’ll lose 5 energy. BUT WAIT AHOPPY, YOU HAVEN’t EXPLAINED ENERGY YET. I did. A few months ago actually

Another rules clarification: If at the end of a round, a leader has not been elected the person with the most votes becomes the leader. If there is still a tie, leader goes to the person who has the longest held vote (the earliest vote that has not changed)

Additionally, the leader stays leader in the room from round to round unless they are usurped. I'm not sure I made that clear

More clarification from questions that have come up:

The agents force another player to show them their card by showing their card to that player. They can show their card to as many people as they want, but they must tell the other person they are/aren't using their power. They still must post that they are whispering to that other person when they reveal their card to them.

As the final room switch happens, everyone waits with baited breath, wondering if everyone in their room will end up dead, or if everyone in the other room will end up dead… As president mcmcsalot walks into room A, Robz888 grins wickedly, opens his coat, and pulls the pin on the vest underneath! A show of glitter explodes from his chest, coating everyone in room A in so much glitter that no amount of showering will remove all of the glitter. Mcmcsalot hangs his head in disappointment, knowing that this must be the end of his political career. Never has a politician been re-elected after a glitter-bombing. He shoots his brother a look of disappointment as he storms out of the room, digging glitter out of his ears. The only solace he finds is that his brother was gracious enough to use a glitter bomb, and not a real one.

Oh and one more thing I’ve failed to mention: This is SURVIVOR: EXILE ISLAND! What that means is that whenever you win a reward challenge, in addition to getting the reward you also get to send someone from the other tribe to exile island. What this means is that person does not get to talk to their tribemates until the next challenge. HOWEVER: since this was an immunity and reward challenge, in this unique situation that person will not take part in this tribal council. Necropolis tribe, you have 24 hours to discuss and choose who you want to send. The most recent post in bold 24 hours from this post will be the person I send to exile.

Next, resting/gathering/shelter building
At the beginning of each game phase you will declare what you are doing: resting, building shelter, or gathering. In order to successfully do whatever you’re planning on doing, there are some restrictions on posting. They’re pretty simple: You’re free to post in the tribe thread no matter what you are doing. As far as talking to people individually, you can only talk to the people who are also doing the same activity you are doing. If you make a post with someone not doing the same activity as you, you will not gain any energy you were going to by doing that activity. Make sense? Pretty simple.
Resting: You gain an amount of energy based on the number of days you rest. This will be increased by an improved shelter.
Gathering: You will find some kind of food that will give you a pile of energy plus some morale for your whole tribe! The energy you get will be split evenly among everyone in your tribe.
Building shelter: You won’t get any energy, but based on how many days spent by people, you’ll eventually get shelter upgrades which increase the energy gains from resting.

Necropolis team, you’re quite happy at your victory, your morale is at +10! Hovel tribe, you’re sad but this is just the first time you’ve lost and you’re mostly excited to be here. Your morale is at -5. Therefore Necropolis tribe loses 18 energy and Hovel tribe loses 21. I’ll update everyone with their energy totals. All this will take some time, I have some other things to do today.

Finally, I failed to mention earlier that there will be penalties for letting your energy drop too low. If your energy drops to 50, you will start to get a disadvantage in the challenge. If your energy drops to 0, you will no longer be able to participate in the challenge.

All that should be fairly straightforward I hope… Any questions and clarifications, I’m more than happy to do so. I hope I haven’t missed anything this time.

I can now comment on the energy penalty in the challenge: teamlyle said that he would card share with Jimmmmm, he just showed his color and when Jimmmmm said "card share means you have to show me your whole card" teamlyle said he couldn't because he was coy. He never showed his whole card to Jimmmmm, Jimmmmm never showed his whole card to teamlyle. I didn't want to just penalize him 5 energy for not being able to show his card because I didn't want to mod-confirm him as coy, so I told him he could lose 5 energy if he wants to follow through with the claim of being coy (which he had to) but it kind of left it open for him to be lying. Since no card was actually shown and it didn't trick Jimmmmm into showing his card, I didn't deem it that major of a penalty.

More clarifications and a mistake I made

Mistake: Blue team has an attractive team member! What this means is their morale scale is shifted from -50/+50 up to -40/+60 and their resting morale level is +10! Therefore their new morale is really +5 and they only lose 19 energy each. Sorry for the mistake.

Clarification: In 3+ person QT's, you can't post in it if someone else in the QT is doing a different task than you, or else you lose your task's benefit.

Black Box is an atomic game of hide and seek! You will be paired up one-on-one with a player from the other tribe. Hovel tribe, since you are one player down, one person will have to play 2 players at once.

Rules of the game
Black box is played on an 8x8 grid. Each player will hide 4 atoms on their board somewhere in the grid. In order to locate the atoms on your opponent’s board you will fire lasers in from the edges of the board. Your opponent will then report what happens with the laser. Using these hints you will try and locate the atoms on your opponent’s board.

Details:
On your turn, you name a number. A laser is shot from that location around the edge of the board. Your opponent looks at the position of the atoms he has secretly placed on his board and reports the result of firing a laser from that location. Here is how the lasers interact with the atoms and how to report them

Detour - When a laser passes by an atom in an adjacent row/column the laser is deflected 90 degrees away from the atom. This can happen multiple times before the laser leaves the box. When you report a detour, you report the location the laser leaves the box. Example below:

In this example, player A fired a laser out of position 4, the Player B reported “19”. An easy way to mark this is to put the same letter outside those numbers as shown.
Hit - A hit occurs when the laser hits an atom dead on. The laser does not come out of the box. There can be other deflections before the laser hits the atom, the only thing that is reported is “hit”. An example of this can be seen below.

Reflection - Final possible result is the laser returns to the same port it came from. This can happen in 2 ways: The laser is deflected multiple times and returns to the same port.

The other way it can happen is the atom is on the edge of the board and the laser coming out is adjacent to it. This can be seen in positions 23 and 21 in the full board example below.

Complete board example

Everyone will be receiving a spreadsheet with 2 blank boards on it. Fill the top one with your atom positions and the results of firing a laser from each position, just like the complete board example above. The lower board is where you will record the results from firing lasers into your opponent’s board. Please make sure to actually record them here because this is how your score will be totaled.

Once you feel you have enough information to locate all the atoms, you will make a guess. When you do, you report all the positions you think the atoms are at to your opponent. They then tell you which atoms are incorrect.

Scoring:
When you fire a laser, you score points as follows:
Detour - 2 pts
Reflection - 1 pt
Hit - 1pt

When you make a guess, each incorrectly placed atom gives you 5 points.
You keep going until each player has completed their board. (so if player A has already found all 4 atoms and player B has not, player B keeps going and A keeps reporting).
an incorrectly reported laser results in a score of 0 for your opponent for the whole board

The tribe with the lowest total score wins reward! I bet you wanna know what you’re playing for!
Hunting gear! This comes with enough hunting gear to send 2 people hunting! With this gear, 2 of your gatherers will be able to hunt. Hunting requires some more time to be successful, but results in much higher energy production.

Jimmmmm spent 10 energy on this challenge so he automatically receives -5 points!
Finally, Jimmmmm and mpsprs are intelligent meaning they get 5 atoms to hide in their black boxes.

Challenge starts in 24 hours when Hovel chooses who will play 2 people. Please ask any questions and clarifications you might have in this thread. That way everyone can benefit from the clarifications because I know this is a bit confusing.

Re: mpsprs - with 4 atoms this should not be a problem. With 5, please don't make an indeterminate board. If you have the ability to place 5 and you'd rather place 4, you may do so but you must tell your opponent how many you're placing when you start.

I will be sending you links to private QT's with these people. Please only talk about the challenge. I might even recommend trying to schedule a time you can both be on to do the challenge faster. This is of course not necessary, but could be nice to help speed things along.
To start, someone say ex. Fire # It doesn't really matter who goes first. Then the next person responds with Detour # or Hit or Reflection. This then goes back and forth until you are ready to guess. Then you say Guess: (##,##) etc. to guess the coordinates of the atoms. Pretty straightforward.

Finally, I have taken screenshots of all your boards so do not change them. feel free to mark things up in any way you need though. The lower board is yours to do whatever you want with.

Finally, I expect each person to make a move every 24 hours. I haven't chosen any "punishment" per se for that, but I reserve the right to do so if this takes an excessively long time. I of course will understand any necessary IRL extenuating circumstances, but please make those known in your confessionals.

The Hovel's are very disappointed at their second defeat. Their morale drops to -5! However, their team member's attractiveness brings their morale to +5.
Necropolis' are quite happy about their victory even though they appeared to be at a great disadvantage. They gain 5 morale putting their morale at 24!

If you're looking at your energy and are confused as to why the "Adj" column might not have the correct value in it. That's because your total is calculated by summing up the "Adj" column, and if you hit your cap of 100 energy you only get the energy to get you to 100, not any of the energy that puts you over 100. I feel like I've explained this poorly, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I will deduct energy spent on this challenge before the challenge starts. Finally, morale won't affect your energy expenditure. So say you're at 100 energy and you want to spend 50 and you're at 10 morale, you just spend 50 energy.

It has been brought to my attention that there has been some confusion regarding energy and the timing for its consumption. And rightly so, I don't think I've done a great job explaining that. And it's been a WIP this whole time. So lets throw down some guidelines

For challenges, I will be making a post with your treemail before I introduce the challenge. 24 hours later (in general) I'll be making the challenge details announcement. Along with the treemail, you will be told the increments you can spend energy in. You have until the challenge details announcement to state how much energy you will be spending. This energy will be deducted at the beginning of the challenge.

The challenge details announcement will include the amount of energy participating in the challenge will cost you. This will be deducted at the end of the challenge.

Any energy or morale gains made during the challenge will not be totaled up until the end of the challenge. This is for my own sanity and for simplicity. So if you are below 50 at the start of the challenge, you will have the disadvantage for the whole challenge. Your energy gains and morale during the challenge will be totaled up before the deduction of the energy from participating in the challenge. If this total exceeds 100, the excess energy is just lost. And as I type this and think about it, I might not have done this completely right, because you should never be at 100 after a challenge. Since this is the case, I will be updating energy totals again tonight, and possibly even looking at the way I'm doing energy stuff. This will push back the immunity challenge details at least 1 day while I look into this. Sorry for the delay.

Ok, I've decided to stick with what I've been doing and I have correct energy totals. They should all be accurate now. So the gathering/resting energy will be gained before energy loss from participating in the challenge. So really, you should never hit 100 energy after a challenge.

Today's challenge is:
Coin Age!
Time for you guys to take control of the island we're stranded on! This challenge pits tribe against tribe in an epic battle.
Coin Age is an area control game. The map looks like this

Each tribe gets 10 coins: Four 1's, three 2's, two 3's, and one 4. At the beginning of the game they are all in your bank. Each coin has 2 sides: Hovel and Necropolis
At the beginning of your tribe's turn you take one of each coin that you have left in your bank and flip it (I'll do the coin flipping via our other sponsor, Random.org). Depending on how many coins flip to your tribe's side, you can preform different actions on the island of Coin Age:

4   Place 2 or pay 1 to place3
3   Place 2
2   Place 2
1   Place 1 and Move
0   Capture and Move

Place: Take one of the matching coins and place it on an empty space or on top of a coin of higher value.
Pay: Give one of your matching coins to the other tribe
Move: Move all the coins in any one space to an empty adjacent space
Capture: Remove a coin from the map and place it in your bank. The captured coin must be the only coin in the space, or the top of the stack of coins

The game ends when a coin is placed on the last empty space on the map or one tribe places their last coin on the map.

Scoring:
Control: A coin controls a space if it is the top of a stack in a space, or the only coin in the space.
Each coin that controls a space scores its value for its tribe.
The team that controls more spaces in a region doubles their scores in that region. Regions are designated by the colors on the map. No bonus points are scored for a tied region.

You also score one point for each coin left in your bank at the end

Here is an example of a finished game:
(in this representation, the top of the stack is to the right and the bottom to the left)

Blue scores 10 and Red scores 11. (This is without the coins left over in the bank, I think you would get how that works)

In the case of a tie, the team with the highest total rank of coins still in their bank is the winner

How this is going to work: Elect someone to be the spokesperson for your team. They will submit your team's move in this thread. I expect one move per 24 hours minimum. I will try to keep up with these moves as well as I can and report the next coin flips as quickly as I can.

For every 30 energy your tribe spent you can choose 1 coin to choose the side it ends up on. This means Necropolis will be able to do this 7 times, Hovel can do this once. When you want to use this power, before I report the flips your spokesperson specifies in bold in this thread the coins they want to choose their result. This means as long as you still have this power to use, I will not report your flips until you say No power, or specify coins you are determining.

yes. The coins are basically dice, depending on how many land on your tribe's side (so a 1 randomly generated from 0-1) tells you what you can do with the coins that did land on that side
