What the heck happened here? Is Butcher of all things really such a strong Big Money enabler? I do feel like my opponent got rather lucky draws:
  • Drew Butcher + Estate on both turns 4 and 5
  • Bought Gold on turns 7 and 8 and immediately drew them both on turn 9
  • Did not draw a single dead card on either of his last 2 shuffles

In retrospect, knowing I wouldn't be facing any attacks myself, I would have only gotten a single JoAT, and discarded estates instead of keeping them to trash, probably getting Witch earlier in the process.

Yes.  Especially when you can open Butcher/- like your opponent did.

Also, I guess this belongs in the Help! sub-board, but I can't move it myself.

Well, your opponent did get very lucky, but Butcher is actually a strong big money enabler as well.

BM+Butcher is indeed strong; but shouldn't BM+Witch and BM+Soothsayer both be stronger on this board?

Overall, this looks like a board with tons of good BM cards: Soothsayer, Witch, JOAT, Butcher, Embassy.

While opponent got nearly perfect draws he also executed his strategy better than you.

His mistakes were mainly spending too many coin tokens. He should keep token instead buying silver at turn 4. Then at turn 5 he could buy second butcher, with saved token. Without saved one he should replace estate with copper so he could buy second butcher.

You made worse mistakes, first was opening with shanty town which is terrible. You need silver to likely reach 5 in second shuffle. That is critical as if you don't buy with there it would be too late. On turn 4 you buy second useless shanty town instead silver.

On turns 6 and 7 you should buy embassy instead witch. Its just too late for cursing. Butcher leads to quick games by remodeling gold/province->province.

As opening witch looks worse than butcher as joat will handle curses.

I would open soothsayer instead. Mainly as gold gainer for early economy. Then I would buy two embassies on 5 followed by butcher and minstrel on 4. Embassy would lead to likely province turn due to synergy with soothsayers gold. Also butcher will change these to provinces but you need to first draw them together with minstrel/embassy.

Thats how I would play it. Opening with 5 on this board is huge, that could move winning chance to ~70% on turn 1

JoaT isn't an invincible strategy.
