Air travel with Dominion

I had a holiday vacation with my family this year and thought I'd bring along some Dominion cards for some evening entertainment. We were traveling by plane and I didn't want to pack full Dominion boxes in my luggage so I put for sets of cards into two standard card boxes (like these). I packed them in my carry-on because I don't like packing anything but clothes in checked baggage. Heads up to traveling Dominion players. TSA is completely baffled by card storage boxes. My bag got searched at every security checkpoint I went through. The cards show up as solid chunks of unknown substance on the xrays and they seem to get nervous about anything that they can't positively identify (and rightly so).

So does anybody have any good solutions for airline travel with Dominion? Checking the cards doesn't seem like it would work because they xray checked baggage as well, which means they could still search it. Only, I wouldn't be there to prevent them from opening the box upside down, spilling 400+ cards all over the place.

I know there are clear boxes.  Alternately, put them in gallon-sized plastic bags.  If the cards are put in the bags neatly and packed among clothes, they should stay tidy and shouldn't be damaged at all.  If you're worried about what happens at your destination, flatten the card box and pack it separately.

When I was growing up, I had a card box that had basebally things printed on it.  Storing cards in that would make it more obvious what the contents are.

So yeah, store it in something clear and/or make the box look more like a toy.  Unidentified mass in a nondescript cardboard box would freak me out too.

Huh, that's odd. I used the exact same travel solution at Thanksgiving and they didn't even search my bag once.

This has happened to me multiple times! I carry my cards in transparent tupperware-style plastic boxes, and the security people at the airport always stop me if they are in my hand luggage ("what are these?" "magnetic cards?" "it might be a you-know-what") ... ! I put them in my suitcase this time and it was fine.

A bunch of us had the same problem when travelling to the World Championships of a CCG (as they were then called) about 15 years ago.

Two options that have worked for me:

1) Rubber band cards into blocks of about 60-80, using the blank cards and mats as separators between whatever "categories" of cards your brain delineates.  Put the blocks into the lower half of a gallon ziploc, fold the ziploc over, and rubber band the blocks together from the outside of the ziplock.  This "locks" the blocks together so they dont rub.

2) Put cards into clear boxes that diving masks come in.  These are harder, and provide more protection, at the small cost of slightly extra weight, and less flexiblility as to where they fit in a piece of luggage.  See my post at http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1012.msg16935#msg16935
