I also thought the 90s was the best when the 2000s were fresh.  I've changed my tune; I think it's pretty even across every decade and the last five years have been really strong.

This is my most recent list: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/jsh357/favorite_games/

A) Series of games
B) Dominion was actually designed in the 90's just not released, so it would count anyway

I agree that the 90s had a lot of great genre-defining games like Doom (gameplay FPS), Starcraft (RTS), Super Mario 64 (3D platforming), Half-Life (cinematic FPS). I think that back then, there wasn't as clear a distinction between AAA and indie, so for example a game like Doom could innovate on both graphics and gameplay. These days, there is still a ton of gameplay innovation, just mostly not in the same games that have the best graphics.

I don't think Aeons of Strife was that good, so the 90's definitely lose in the best game genre.

I don't disagree with the 90's being the best gaming decade or anything, I disagree with dominion being omitted from the list. Okay, it's a video game list, whatever.

But that means your not really understanding, its the list as a whole...so even if there was a card game list, all the others from the same decade would have to be better as well

you can take your fancy newer graphics and shove them.

Where?

4X Civilization 2

Both Civ4 and Civ5 are way better than Civ2 though.

Other games... Portal should be in any "best game evah" list. So should Minecraft and a Guitar Hero, through sheer relevance alone. At least one Fire Emblem would be nice. And personally I am partial to Mark of the Ninja. I am probably forgetting some...

Sim Sim City

I know I'm doing the whole taking-it-out-of-context thing, but 'Sim Sim City' sounds like a game in which you simulate the life of some dude who just wants to sit down and play some Sim City.

UFO Enemy Unknown (the original, the remake good too)
Batman: Arkham Asylum (I don't play many action combat games but this seemed simply right)

Sim Sim City, - 1989
Open World Ultima 5,  - 1988
Puzzle Myst

The 90's had it all. There is no decade that can produce a better series of games, you can take your fancy newer graphics and shove them.
I don't see how Myst makes it in ahead of Secret of Monkey Island (from 1990).

I think the big thing is just, that video games have become way more expensive to make, and this has caused people to be way less interested in doing anything innovative and thus risky. Ultima IV was still one guy doing the whole thing. Skyrim is a giant team. There are still sometimes big budget innovative games, like uh Super Mario Galaxy, well that one is fading into the past but you know. Mostly though people are innovating more where it's less risky, in small flash games and stuff.

Let's see. I've played exactly none of those games.

An arbitrary number of best games in no particular order: Kara no Shoujo, Jade Empire, Warcraft III, Conquer 1.0, Aveyond, Prismata, Penumbra: Overture, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, Silent Hill 2, Psychonauts, Mortal Kombat 3, Kraven Manor, NetMatch 2.5, Jetpack, Mega-Lo-Mania/Tyrants: Fight Through Time, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.
And I've played only one of those games (you can probably guess which one).

I don't know what this means...

I found that Super Mario 3D World felt a lot different from the galaxy games and brought a lot of new ideas. Some of that is from reviving ideas from the 2D games, but those are used in new ways. I think it's as much different from the galaxy games as those were from 64/Sunshine.

I'd agree if Roller Coaster Tycoon didn't exist. AoE/AoK fit in nicely at 2nd place though. :)

Well it was a great game, and a nice evolution of Super Mario 3D Land from the 3DS. I feel like the main thing (for 3D Land) was just working out that you could manage a 3D Mario platformer without it all being the clock world from Mario 64, by keeping mostly to 2 dimensions within the 3 dimensions. So it will be, now you have a flat area, now you do stuff on a wall. That was a fine idea but felt obvious; Mario Galaxy is more of a leap.
