TL;DR- Comedy of errors:

1. I go for Chapel - Treasure Map
2. Accidentally Chapel an extra copper, bringing the total $ in my deck down to $3.
3. Accidentally played my single Treasure Map,  trashing it.
4. Flagrantly violate the PPR and buy it when I'm down by 15 VP.
5. Somehow manage to get obscenely, world-breakingly lucky and end the game in a tie.

Well breaking PPR was by far the right move.

PPR doesn't make much sense when you're down enough that you'd need both Provinces to win, does it?

I'm pretty sure PPR is only a thing if you can take the lead with a different victory card instead of buying the Province.  If you need both of them anyway, it usually doesn't matter if you wait to buy the first one.

I know strategy isn't the point here, but:

Please don't open Chapel/Lookout! :)  What is that ever doing for you that Chapel isn't?

On this board I think I want to go Poor House.  The question is how to get there: hopefully a single Silver and a Poor House will get you to $5, and then you're OK.  You want to take BV/Market at first, as draw is not too important until you have enough Poor Houses to stop you drawing your deck.  You'll want Rabbles before too long though.

EDIT: missing "stop".

Yeah, with Chapel/Silver (trash the Silver later) into Markets and Poor Houses you can get all the BVs + Markets pretty quickly, then 3-pile on Poor Houses after getting enough points for the win.

Ok, so one of my pet peeves is when people say "PPR" and they mean "Don't buy the penultimate province" or "Don't buy the penultimate province when the opponent might be able to get the last one and win". Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and the actual Penultimate Province Rule (which isn't as important as the principle) does indeed understand that.
