I am unsure if you overpay for masterpiece etc in treasure or coin tokens.

Coin tokens are spent for "coins", which are the same thing that Treasure cards and action cards with the yellow +X symbol give you. You can overpay for masterpiece, or any overpay card, with either of them.

Note that you have to choose to use your coin tokens for coins at the beginning of your buy phase (this is really only relevant in online play, assuming the people you're playing with IRL aren't dicks about it).

To buy a card, you use "coins".  You can get coins by playing treasures (other than Horn of Plenty) and you can get coins by playing certain Action cards, such as Festival.  The latter is often referred to as "virtual coin". 

In Guilds, certain cards grant you coin tokens.  At the start of your buy phase, you can spend your coin tokens to receive 1 coin each.  Then you can play your treasures and use your total generated coins and buys that turn to buy cards.

Overpay is entirely separate.  When you buy a card with an overpay effect, you can pay more coins than the card actually costs in order to receive a benefit.  At this point, it no longer matters what the source of the coins was.

It's up to you. You can use both or one or the other.
