Where 5/2 is meaningless..

Bank, Nobles, Goons, Feast, Island, Warehouse, Fishing Village, Black Market, Workshop, Swindler

So I get 5/2 and open with Island/Nothing...

Things did get better though - Remake from black market was a God's send, so was Kings Court - though it came late and was used only 2-3 times.
My opponent found Hoard (which I swindled after he got some nice rounds of 4$ = Island + Gold) and Rabble (which was mildly unpleasant until I swindled that too). The engine mostly consisted of FV/Nobles with remake/BM as early payload and Goons/Swindler later on.

Thanks to his Rabble draw and a more useful opening, he got the $6 earlier than me, but in the end I won 46/44. Game ended on piles (nobles, islands, estates).

I don't think Island/Nothing is ever a good opening. You want some economy, even if it means spending your $5 hand on a $3 card.

I would be very unhappy with 5/2 here, too. I would probably open Black Market/nothing.

Island is rarely a good opening, period.
Even just buying a silver would have been better.
A deck (thinned by a single Island) that consists of 7 coppers and 2 estates has an average yield of 0.77 per card.
A deck that consists of 7 coppers, 3 estates and a silver has an average yield of 0.82 per card.

One of these decks has a (small) chance of hitting 6.
The other has zero chance.

Yeah, this looks like an opening of BM/Nothing is best here.

I'll break the Black Market consensus and say I'm taking Swindler.  There's no trashing, so a few Curses will do some damage.  I'll probably take Black Market with my next $3.

Fishing Village/Nobles/Goons/BM looks like fun with a Warehouse or 2 thrown in.

On 5, I'd probably open Swindler/- and curse my luck.

I see what you did there.

But yeah, I'd probably do the same. Without knowing the contents of the BM deck, I'd say Swindler is more useful early on, and the presence of Fishing Village makes the extra terminal action not a huge liability later.

Relevant:

Donald X. once told me about the worst opening he'd ever seen in Dominion.

In someone's first game, on his first turn, he played two Coppers.  He thought carefully for a while and took an Estate.

Everyone chimed in at this point.  "Oh, it's too early for that."  "Oh, you want to buy Victory cards later in the game" etc. etc.

Chagrined, on his next turn, he played five Coppers.  After thinking even more carefully, he took a ... Feast.

That guy was saw the edge cases before everyone else.  Way ahead of his time.

Find an edge case where Feast on 5/2 is the right decision. Here's one.
Baker game opening Stonemason TR Feast hoping for a good shuffle.

Seems kinda sketch because you're not actually spending $5 on a Feast.

I'm thinking Mint and Graverobber. Mint if for some weird reason you want to get one fast but don't want to trash your Coppers, Graverobber so it has something to pick back up right away.
