Rebuild vs. Steward-Facilitated Engine

SUPPLY: Duchess, Menagerie, Sage, Steward, Embassy, Highway, Rabble, Rebuild, Harem, Peddler, Copper, Silver, Gold, Estate, Duchy, Province, Curse

On this board, I open Silver/Silver to go rebuild. I did waste a buy on sage, forgetting that it could hit duchy or silver, not just rebuild. In the end, I lose.

So, was this an engine board or did I lose to luck?

I don't think you played your Rebuild deck optimally. You probably don't want more than one Duchess, and maybe not even one - the filtering helps an engine more than it helps your ferocious digging deck.

Evidence of thriving towns, Pottery, roads, and a centralized government amaze the startled scientists.

Here it is hard to say what is better as you had quite bad shuffle luck, while your opponent looks above average. Look at turn 8 where your rebuild skipped most of your cards. Also you could win if you draw turn 15 hand (2 rebuilds+2 copper) instead that turn 14 duchess, copper  and green.

This isn't actually a super-impressive engine. There's basically some cantrip coppers and a first-rate trasher, but the Rabble is countered by Rebuild, and there's no real way to gain more than one card per turn. Would a BM strategy with Embassy be valuable here?

The engine seems pretty weak and I guess it should loose to Rebuild and Embassy-BM. There's really a big lack of +Buy or a gainer for Highway to be good enough.
Embassy/BM is superfast and could get 4 Provinces in 12 turns if things go well, but Rebuild really loves that extra Silver. I don't really know, I'd guess Rebuild is still better and go for it.

And I really wonder how your opponent could get to 5 Provinces after 14 turns with this strange deck.
