"Gain a card"

I can't quite figure out a balancing I'm happy with, but I like the idea of an unrestricted (at least by price) gainer.  I was working on figuring out a "Gain a card" card, but then I thought it would just be used for greening and treasure.  I think "Gain an action card" is a lot interesting, but I just can't price it.  $4 seems about right based off Workshop, but then I think about Feast and it seems too cheap.  More than that, though, and I start thinking it doesn't compare well to University, which also makes a Potion cost seem kinda silly.  Maybe add more text?  Terminal silver?  One-shot?  Non-terminal?  "Gain a curse, if you do..."? There's gotta be a way to make it work well.

The only thing I can think of would be a penalty the more the cost of the card, but that doesn't seem like a good idea either.  University originally was "Gain an action card" but Donald realized it didn't work, so made it "action up to $5".

Gaining Provinces/Colonies is still too good, especially since you can KC this. I would at least say non-Victory, otherwise, it is a non-starter for me.

If this is in play, gain a card. If it costs more than X (5?) and it is ...
... a victory card: Each opponent takes an extra turn after this turn.
... an action card: Each opponent may gain a cheaper card.
... a treasure card: Each opponent gain Y coin tokens.

Why the return to the supply? This is an extremely strong opening, to the point of opening two of these being optimal in a great number of boards. It trashes your deck + gains you two strong cards + it lets you buy things while trashing. Consider gaining two KCs and buying a single IW while trashing 7 or 8/10 starting cards... crazy.

Strictly better than Chapel.

I wouldn't encourage this effect in any form.

It is not. It trashes itself, which you may not want, and it trashes your whole hand, which you may not want.

$X - Action
Gain a Scout. If you do, you may gain a cheaper card.
---------
Setup: In games using this, add a Scout pile to the supply.

There, now it's balanced.

It was supposed to be an auto-buy that still leads to an interesting game, like Chapel.
It returns victory cards to the supply because in 4 player it could maybe pile the Provinces out too fast.  Might not be a necessary clause really.

I think it's pretty impossible to actually make a gain a card that you can really look at and mull over and wonder whether you want it or not.

Fool's Workshop
$2 - Action

+1 Card
+1 Action

Gain a card costing no more in Coins than twice the number of Fool's Workshops in play.  If the gained card is a Victory card, trash this.

Bear in mind the cost that a "Gain a card" card would need.

Feast - $4 - Trashes itself, can only gain up to $5.

University - ~$4.5 - Can only gain Actions up to $5

Altar - $6 - Has to trash another card, can only gain up to $5

So to me, a card that was just "Gain a card costing up to $5" would need to cost at least $7.  So a card that was "Gain a card" would have to be at least $8, if not more.

Actually, a Gainer costing something like $9 or $10 but which power would only be ''Gain a card'' might be balanced. It would be super long to build up to it, but once you have it and can play it a lot, you can basically win the game in a turn or two.

However, the risks of it being broken in certain games (with KC/Bridge and then KC/Gainer for example) might be too high.

The main problem i see with a card that says "Gain a card" without a condition/restriction depending on what you gain is that if you can't really balance it. If you, let's say, balance it for Province games, it will be too strong in Colony games. When balanced for Colony games, it will be bad when Colonies are missing.

So, we're trying to determine how to balance:

1. Gain a card costing $0 to $11+P
2. Gain an Action card
3. Gain a Treasure card
4. Gain a Victory Card
5. Gain a Curse
6. Gain a Spoils
7. Gain a Ruins
8. Gain a Madman
9. Gain a Mercenary
10. Gain a Prize

... into one card?

I assume it's gain from the supply. Even cards that read "gain a card costing up to $4" mean in the supply.
