dondon plays Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Hi, I know there's like, 3 other Fire Emblem players on f.DS, but I wanted to share this (especially after engaging in a discussion with pacovf in the "video games you can't beat" thread). Beware: the game is in Japanese, and if you've never played any of the games in the Fire Emblem franchise before, you'll probably have a tough time following along even with the audio commentary.

Huh, looks a bit Shining Force-esque.  But I'm guessing you have more customization with unit choices?

Shining Force is Fire Emblem-esque, actually.

Confession: I've never played Shining Force, or Tactics Ogre, or any of the other games Fire Emblem is commonly compared to :-[

Tactics Ogre/FFT are very different from FE.  They are more about creating your own characters and leveling them up, picking skills, etc, whereas FE is more about character placement and using resources effectively.  I have never completed a Shining Force game, but the original seemed to have more in common with Fire Emblem from what I remember.

In Shining Force (I and II), you follow a main hero as he travels through a journey.  You start out with a small party, around 5ish, and you meet more characters that join your force as you progress.  Each character has a unique identity and personality; there are no generic units. From what I saw from that video, the battle system is about identical.  You move units on a grid and select an action from a menu.  The action takes you to a "battle view" where there is an animation of whatever you do (swing your sword, cast a spell, use an item, etc.), as well as the result (how much damage and experience).  You end up with a few dozen units total, and you can select maybe 12 at a time as the active "party" to go on the battle field.

You gain experience per action you perform, and you get a level up every 100 XP.  Once you reach a certain level, you can promote your character to a new class (e.g., Mage -> Wizard), where their progression upon level up improves.

The Shining Force games were some of my favorites growing up.  I liked the battle system a lot, and also the story and different characters and classes.

It is definitely interesting, but I don't really have the time to watch them right now...

Can't talk for the rest of FE players around here.

I've always had little interest in 0% growth runs. Doesn't help you're playing one of the more bland and RNG dependent FEs (those hit rates). I might have been more interested if it were FE8 but even then, ehh.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

RNG-dependent yes, but bland? I don't know where FE6 gets this reputation. It has reasonably ample room for staff work and it has the craziness that is the chapter 21 secret shop.

Maybe it's because I played FE7 first, but FE6 felt like an even more generic version of that. It has some interesting mechanics and chapters, sure, but the story feels dull and the supports are pretty boring. I don't usually care too much for FE stories or characters, but along with the RNG making it not that fun to play I didn't think much of FE6 on my first play through. I still want to beat it on Hard eventually, just because it's there. but that might not be for a while.

It's been awhile; I finished this LP a few days ago and I figured I might as well cap it off here.
