The only thing i can think of are mind games. For example, you know one of the treasures Adventurer will reveal is Contraband and want to make it appear as if you have so much money you don't actually care about -2$. By this you hope to increase the chance of your opponent naming a card you couldn't afford even with those 2$, a Colony for example, so you can buy the card you want (Province).
