An interesting article. I'm not sure how one cheats at TTR though.

Reading the forum discussion he appeared to end up with extra cards, either by taking extra turns or just taking extra cards? http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?th=29948&start=160

Why would you choose to cheat when you know there are thousands of trained eyes watching your every move?

I take it you don't follow the MTG pro scene ?

These guys are just used to cheating, they do it instinctively.

On a much smaller level for example, I used to often cheat at The Settlers of Catan, pretending I had 7 cards in hand when I really had 8 when a 7 would be rolled. I knew cheating was wrong and felt bad about it afterwards (especially if I won, but that rarely happened anyway), but it took me some time to shake the habit off.

I don't follow any pro scene and until this thread did not know what TTR was or that it existed.

The old adage, cheaters never win, is true in my perspective. The game may end and a tally of points or whatever may indicate you are a winner but the reality is you won an entirely different game that only you knew you were playing. You were not actually playing the game everyone else was and thus you did not win that game, in fact, everyone lost.

Care to elaborate? This sounds like a weird statement.

Basically I think it becomes a habit to them. I don't know about this case, but there was a high profile banning in MTG recently where the guy was repeatedly caught on camera stacking his opponents deck.

The thing is, not that many matches end up on camera, and they weren't super high stakes matches either. So the guy could have just refrained from doing his thing when he was on camera and he would probably never have been caught, but he did.

Why ? Because it's just what he does, or at least that's my explanation.

I think Voltaire was asking about the ambiguity in your statement that "these guys are just used to cheating".  It sounded like "these guys" referred to MTG pros in general, which would be quite the sweeping allegation.

More likely, you just meant that "cheaters gonna cheat".

You haven't played Ticket to Ride??!  I mean, that's totally a gateway game.

Oh, ok. Yes, that's what I meant more or less.
