Just finished Daredevil season 3. It's thoroughly excellent and probably my favorite season of any of the marvel netflix shows.

I just finished it last night. I think I might go so far as to say it's my favorite season of any TV show, ever.

Is anyone watching the new season of Daredevil? Did anyone notice (episode 4, not really a spoiler) an 11-minute scene with no cuts? That has to be the most impressive scene out of any TV show ever.

Just got through this episode last night and wow. The show is absolutely fantastic.

i also loved daredevil season 3, way better than season 2 imo, and huge relief after the debacle that was jessica jones season 2. also, i learned recently that charlie cox (the actor that plays matt murdock) is british ?? i never would have guessed; he does a great american accent.

Why do people even complain about Jessica Jones Season 2. They can't all be the best season ever.

I just started maniac the other night and I am through 3 episodes. I definitely like th show by I can’t tell if it’s an amazing show or a mediocre show.

It’s a little jarring the difference in tone the show takes with the main two characters versus the doctors. A consistent dark/meloncholy tone would make me feel like I knew where the show was headed more but I can’t tell if I would like that better than where I’m at.

I've thought it was enjoyable, but it tries to be weird and profound at the same time and doesn't always get the balance just right, making some bits feel too comical and others too "generic drama show".

Damn, I just read on wikipedia that

According to Bloomberg L.P., the fifth series [of Black Mirror] is expected to be released in December 2018

I'm super ready for more Black Mirror. It still drawfs all but a hand full of others shows in my book. And I was always wondering why they'd stop after four seasons, given that it's a) successful and b) can obviously be continued with no inherent disadvantage to earlier seasons given the episodic format.

And I don't think there was any quality decline throughout the first fours easons, so season 5 ought to be just as good.

First off that's awesome news I love me some black mirror. Secondly if you have nothing in the meantime I would suggest maniac. I Just finished the show and it is wonderful, specifically if people like black mirror and eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. My concerns about the shows tone actually resolves in a pretty nice way it never leans one way too much and is always appropriate to what the plot calls for. Its a great one off for people who have tons of ongoing shows and want a quick break. The episodes go very fast and give you that "just one more" feeling that I haven't gotten from a show in awhile.

While I would have loved to get more Black Mirror sooner, I am perfectly happy with them working on getting the new season right. How many times do we complain about a show going downhill after so many seasons? Usually that happens because writers are in a hurry. The benefit of the Netflix format is that they aren't trying to pop out weekly episodes to the point where their resources are strained. Basically they're filming a giant movie. But with Black Mirror, it's a bunch of little movies. Looking forward to this.

I also started Jessica Jones Season 2. I had heard good things about Daredevil Season 3, but I thought I would finish up JJ first. Maybe Luke Cage.

My girlfriend and I just finished season 2 of Sens8. It was... something. We didn't find out until after finishing season 2 that the "finale" as Netflix shows it, was actually a concluding episode release a year or two after season 2. It wasn't especially obvious, since the penultimate episode ends on a cliffhanger that feels like it's building up to a season finale, when in fact it was meant to be a cliffhanger for the season I suppose.

Anyway, that aside, we have... many issues with how things turned out.

The ending is ridiculously happy. Like, literally everything ends up as happy as possible - everything works out for everyone, everyone recovers from their fatal gunshot wounds, everyone ends up with a romantic partner, Kala never has to actually choose between Wolfgang and Rajan, they're both just like "threesome is fine" - and speaking of which, why was she bought back from flatline with A BLOODY TASER? Even with defibrillation that obviously doesn't work - the clue is kinda in the name, it stops fibrillation, it doesn't start a flatlined heart. And a taser is even dumber. We both agreed that if Kala had died at that point, it would have made the end of the series a lot more potent.

Regardless, the series left with a lot of unresolved plot:

Will's whole plotline of seeing Sara is never really resolved. It got built up a bit early in season 2 and then kinda disappeared.

Reily... I think mostly was resolved. Reily honestly mostly becomes Will's sidekick for most of season 2, only occasionally doing things independently of him.

With Kala, well there's the above issues but also, Rajan's whole investigation and fearing for his life are never concluded in any way.

Capheus's political success or failure is never mentioned. Also, everything relating to his mothers relationship with Silas, everything to do with Githu and the Superpower, and even the extra sensates Capheus sees like one time and then never again.

Wolfgang mostly gets tied up, except for Lila and her cluster (though that affects everyone).

Sun's plot end is stupid. Yeah we'll pardon her for embezzlement, and while we're at it, we can forgive the attempted murder, the (presumably) manslaughter for others involved, the huge amounts of damage caused by dangerous driving in a high speed chase, identity fraud and everything else. And Sun not disposing of a burner phone is beyond stupid. Nomi even mentioned that she knew she had to dispose of it.

Nomi and Amanita's wedding was incredibly cheesy. Nomi's mother suddenly accepting Nomi is completely out of character for her (if her dad had built up to it a little I'd have bought it, given he did call Nomi his daughter in season 2), and just further drives home the point that it's absurdly happy as an ending.

Lito's film status is clearly in jepoardy during the finale, but I guess the implication is that it worked out?

Anyway, the finale also started introducing new concepts that it never really explained further. Presumably things they wanted to bring in for season 3 but shoehorned in now they knew it was ending. Which is weird, you'd think they'd be more focused on tying up loose ends and delivering a full final story, not suddenly opening a new mystery.

Considering the above, and how much they did leave unresolved, we thought they might still be vying for a third series, or at least giving themselves a plot threads they could use to go forward, while neatly wrapping up the big main things. But it was such a weird mixture of "let's rush this thing through in 30 seconds because everything is ending" (Sun being absolved, shutting down everything bad with BPO etc." and "let's open this new thing because everything might not be ending" like the Lacuna.

As you can probably tell, we found the end a little unsatisfying. Sens8 overall had a lot going for it, but a lot going against it. It was far too fond of overly long montage scenes (many sexual), heck it even ended on one, and there are so many unresolved plot points. Plus it suffers pretty badly from good guys who are seemingly invulnerable and unreasonably skilled at many things, though that's moderately common I suppose. But the stories were mostly well written and engaging, the characters interesting and way characters stories come together was well written. The action sequences are somewhat ridiculous at times but thrilling to watch at least.

Overall, if you're considering watching it... maybe. It wasn't a masterpiece by any stretch, but it was entertaining enough. Just make sure you're ready for a lot of sex, a few bad tv tropes and some plotlines to just fade into the background and not be resolved.

I finished up Jessica Jones Season 2 this weekend.

It's pretty decent. The appeal of JJ is that she's super, but she so very human. I've known people that perpetually depressed, and they are certainly exhausting. It's understandable how her friends could get exhausted dealing with her. And then there's the added burden of people near her possibly getting in the line of fire.

As usual, the entire season is a giant downer. Even the victories are tainted or short-lived. For example, Jeri's revenge against Inez and Shane was satisfying to watch, but it's a guilty joy at cheering on someone who is pretty much a rotten person anyway turning to a darkness that ultimately ends two people.

I was a little bit incredulous at the reveal that Jessica's mother not only lived but was also a super, but I found the explanation episode to be sufficient. By the end of that episode, I was accepting of the incredible reveal.

The saddest moment, I felt, was with the replacement head of security. She was respectful of Alisa's boundaries and even did her a favor by ensuring the television was within sight. And it was that act of kindness that ultimately cost her her life (or possibly crippled her). No good deed goes unpunished in this show.

I found the Trish storyline to be pretty good. She has some demons within her, and I feel they did a decent job of presenting them. She recovered pretty quickly after going into a system collapse and nearly dying in the hospital, but then we see a teaser that the process did enhance her after all, and that is a reasonable explanation

The story of Oscar seemed a little forced, but that's probably because it's hard to tell how much time has passed. Some corners may have seemed to have been turned too quickly due to the show's format. I was accepting of it, but I could see where it seemed chaotic to some people. His inclusion was also a little too convenient for what was needed later on in the season.

The thing that bothers me the most is Cheng. His inclusion as a nemesis really seemed forced. He feels the need to muscle in on another PI's territory. Does he do this to all PIs, so did he just have a hard-on for Jessica? And then there's the fact that he was positioned for a perfect shot to take out Alisa, and he failed. Yet, Trish took her out with a handgun against a moving target. I suppose one could argue that the Ferris wheel provided a predictable pattern vs. her moving around in the apartment. And Cheng was a PI, not a combatant; hell, Trish probably has more time on the firing range than Cheng. So maybe my complaint isn't quite as solid, but it's still there.

And Kilgrave's return felt gratuitous. Like, hey, we know you love David Tenant, so he's back! On the other hand, his scenes put into words Jessica's inner struggles. They say you should show and not tell, but those feelings can be difficult to show, so they copped out and brought in Kilgrave to spell it all out for us. It wasn't a deal-breaker for me, but it's ham-fisted.

Great performances though, and the story actually kept me interested a lot more than Season 1, which had a rubber-banding effect that kept the episodes running long after I stopped caring about the cat-and-mouse game between Jessica and Kilgrave.

Honestly, I think it more or less sums up the show well: far too much in your face sexual content.

I don't have a problem with sex in TV shows, where appropriate, but Sens8 took it to a ludicrous level. A 20 second sex scene as they start and/or end gets the point across. A 5 minute sex orgy montage though? Why not just go to pornhub?

My experience with Sense8:

I was super into it in the beginning, when it was just this maelstrom of new places and characters and weird stuff (plus the best opening credits ever). Then the plot started happening, and the plot wasn't that good, particularly once it became obvious that none of the main characters is allowed to die. I thought the latter part of season 1 was weak-ish, too much fucking around (literally and metaphorically) among other things. Going into season 2, I was hoping that it would pick up the pace, less of the light content, more serious stuff, more characters being in real danger. But it did the exact opposite, s02e01 was this extra long extra fan service-y thing. I think I got over half way through then I just gave up and never continued.

For me, there's no chance I'm ever going to watch the show for the experience of hanging out with these people. I can watch K-On for that. Sense8 was good when it took itself seriously and went into unpredictable directions, like early season 1.

One moment I distinctly remember as disappointing was the famous gay actor guy trying to commit suicide and then being saved by his gun being fake. If that had actually worked, it would have been super powerful.

S2E1 was definitely weak. I feel like it ended fairly well though, after being pretty dull for about an hour, and the early parts of season 2 picked up a fair bit compared to season 1, actually. But the whole plot immunity for all main characters definitely does ruin some of the tension.

I've been on a British comedy binge recently, first with rewatching episodes of The IT Crowd and second with rewatching Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.

Both are great shows, but I've learned that trying to explain Garth Marenghi's Darkplace's humor is just a complete crapshoot if they don't get the humor. I will say that you should give the 1st episode a chance, since if you like it, it's only 6 episodes and you can binge the whole series in less time than some movies.

Garth Marenghi is ultraawesome, I watched it twice and I think I mostly got the humor :) but I would say, it's quite narrow compared to IT Crowd. When IT Crowd can be liked by most of the people, Garth Marenghi not so much. Same thing with Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy by the way (check it out if you haven't still!)

I've been sitting on the Gifted since it first aired. Finally watched the pilot this week. That's a pretty strong pilot actually. Hoping the rest of the series follows suit. It has pretty decent ratings, so I'm hopeful.

Holy shit, you guys. Hulu is releasing a Catch-22 miniseries. The 2-hour movie only got a smattering of the novel, so it'll be interesting to see how the miniseries handles it.

At the very least, I am intrigued enough to subscribe to Hulu for a month.

Super disappointed in the last chapter of the series of unfortunate events.

The last book was the most fascinating one of the series, by far. It's the one most different from the others, with the most amount of stuff in it, the most amount of symbolism, the most interesting character, the most interesting setting, you name it. And they ran through the majority of the plot in 15 minutes. Of all the books they chose that one to adapt in half the time. It should have been extra long, not extra short. Instead of cramming into into season 3, they could have had season 3 be 6 episodes like the others, adapting books 10-12, and make the final book its own season. They could have really told this in a lot of detail, and actually shown life on the island.

But the worst thing was the sugar bowl. The idea that it was just something giving immunity from the shroom was stupid, but the fact that it was revealed at all was just beyond idiotic. Just like it was idiotic that we had nice endings to the story arcs of the other orphans, and the old set of villains, and villagers. The main point of the books, the central message, was that real stories are a gigantic mess and you can never solve anything. There's this great scene in the last book where they think Ishmael will explain everything, and then he starts talking about a ring that has never mattered before, because the ring is somehow entangled in all of the other stuff, and all he does is raise lots and lots of new questions before he stops. And of course, we never find out what's up with all that, just like we never learn what happened to the other orphans, or even what happened to the Baudelaire, or what's inside the sugar bowl. Even if they had come up with something less stupid, there is no reveal which could possibly be as interesting as the fact that it's never revealed.

Revealing what's in there is so stupid. stupid stupid stupid.

The tragedy of book 13 specifically is also totally not present. The Baudelaire parents had first ruled the island, and pushed on new inventions, making progress, and giving everyone freedom. Then there was the mutiny and Ishmael became the new leader, and he tried to do the opposite, having everyone lead the simplest life possible, no technology, the same meals every day, the same outfits for everyone. He says that "The only solution, of course, is to stay as far away from the world as possible and lead a safe, simple life." And then this also leads to a mutiny. That's one bleak message, and pretty fascinating.

They really, really botched it. They were fairly faithful to the plot, but the plot itself is totally uninteresting. Everything in the final book is a metaphor. It's all symbolic. That's the interesting thing about it. Copying the plot and ignoring the rest just makes it seem like whoever wrote the script didn't understand what the final book was about.

So I am about 3/4 of the way through the punisher season 2 and it is incredible frustrating. I re-watched season one because my wife couldn’t remember all the plot point and was reminded how wonderful the show was. The cinematography is fantastic it’s suprisingly not overly dark in an attempt to match the tone and instead they use incredible tight dialogue shots to up the sense of anxiety. Also the Character of micro is fantastically written and acted, he always operates with a deep understanding of frank castle learned from watching him for almost a year, and this influences all of their scenes together in a really great way.

So here I am excitedly ready to watch season two and I have continually found myself screaming at the tv for the abysmal story writing and dialogue. Shows like this baffle me that the script makes it out of the writers room without someone raising their hand and going “umm no one in real life would ever say that”. Most of my issues revolve around Billy Russo now jigsaw and the fact that his face is barely scarred. It’s fine if they wanted to go in the direction that it is more his mind/memories that resemble a jigsaw puzzle and not his face. I could live with that but the story arc is not consistent, it still has the character panicing and lashing out because his face is ruined and he can’t stand to look at himself. Also multiple by standers verbally mock him to his face calling him a freak and telling him he’s hideous. He’s an extremely attractive actor with a few scars that aren’t much worse that the war scars he sexily brags about in season one.

Sorry for ranting it just really makes me angry when storytellers take a great already laid out story with solid actors, good funding, and an amazing platform and just take a dump on the script or can’t see past their pages into reality.

For me, Punisher 2 was ok but it wasn't great. Worth watching for a few good characters who work really well together and try to forget those that don't (Russo and the doctor).

I can't agree more.  My wife and I just finished watching and were very excited to see him remove his mask for the first time only to be severely let down by him basically having 5 scars on his face.

Man. I had four strips of bacon yesterday. Was one automatically undercooked, one automatically overcooked? No, let's put a stop to that right here, all four strips were excellent.
