I've been watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix. I finished the first season. I liked it. Musicals are greatly underrepresented in TV shows. Part of the fun was seeing what wacky music genres they incorporated. Many of the songs were rather clever.

I'm in the middle of the first episode of season 2, and I'm finding it kind of blah. I'm wondering if the show peaked with season 1 and if I should just stop and focus on other shows (still working on Bojack). Or does season 2 get better?

I also watched the premiere of Marvel's Inhumans. I never read their comics, though I do remember Medusa at some point. I mostly know these characters from playing a defunct Marvel fighting game.

It only has 4% on Rotten Tomatoes. That seems a bit harsh. It wasn't great, but I didn't feel it was terrible. It has room to improve certainly. One character lost their powers right away, and who wants to see a show about supers with someone without powers? Am I overlooking all the bad things because I want it to succeed? I think the budget is probably going to be their biggest obstacle. Some powers are reduced or hidden probably due to budget constraints. Though they could spend less CGI on Karnak's tactical thinking. Yay, another smart person who apparently imagines glowing calculations in mid-air.

For all of its flaws, I do dig Lockjaw and am always happy to see him do his shtick.

But 4% on Rotten Tomatoes doesn't necessarily mean people think it's terrible, though, right? I think it just means 96% of people gave it a "negative" review (which for the community reviews means lower than a 7/10; the critic reviews are subjectively reviewed by Rotten Tomatoes staff, I believe). So, theoretically, regardless if 96% of reviewers consider something a 6/10 or a 1/10, it would still get a 4%.

Am I understanding that correctly?

In theory yes, but not in practice. If 96% of people gave a 6/10 review or a 1/10 review, they'd both be scored as 4%. But score distributions will be normal-ish about the average (with larger than expected numbers of 1/10s and 10/10s because people are dumb). If the RT score is 4% its highly unlikely to impossible the average score was 6/10.

In general, using RT % scores will correlate fairly well to any out of 10 or 100 or whatever average.

Rotten Tomatoes score is based on critics' reviews. The site does aggregate user reviews too, but I generally ignore those. Extreme fanboyism and shitposting can skew those numbers.

In general, I find that I agree mostly with scores above 70 and scores below 30%. There have been some exceptions. Fast and Furious 7 scored really well, and I found it deplorable. While Inhumans had problems, I'm a little surprised by the 4%. I'm hoping for just a substandard pilot.

Finished S02e02 of stranger things. I feel like the show is reliably going for the second most obvious way for each scene to play out. Just so that it surprises you if  you expect the most obvious, but never really surprising you if you don't.

I like it better than s1 so far, though. The "Going out is a risk. Taking risks are stupid. We are not stupid" speech was great and unexpected.

I also feel like the show is trying to please as wide of a range of viewers as possible everyone by featuring very different agendas and not condemning any of them.

I’m on episode 7 of S2 stranger things and I agree with lots of what you’re saying silver. I think the show has done a great job putting all the charachters into two categories, A) realistic down to earth relatable charachters (hopper/kids) and B) comically stereotypical charachters that are one noted(parents/teacher). The genius is that this lets the show push the story where it wants to without forcing our favorite A charachters to do stupid things that annoy you in other shows. Anytime something forced needs to happen it’s a result of an interaction with one of the B charachters and playing out on a kind of tongue and cheek way that’s much easier to swallow. I also think they do a really good job of not overdoing B stories and episodic arcs that would otherwise degrade the overall strength of the season.

I've only seen the first episode so far, but I've been really impressed with how they refuse to throw away a character from season 1. Her disappearance has a very real effect on the story, and the "for sale" sign was absolutely heart-wrenching. Good job following up.

Anyone into the latest season of TWD?  I’m basically very disappointed, and have been since the beginning of S7.

I'm fine with it. I'm not as big into action , so the last couple episodes of mostly fighting haven't been as compelling, but I still like it. Though I suppose more for the overall story than episode-by-episode value.

This last season of Fear the Walking Dead, though, has been really great.

So I finished Stranger Things s2. What I missed was Dustin having a crisis of conscience facing up to the dozens of deaths he caused by nursing that thing from the upside down. None of the people in the lab would have died if not for him, right?

I don’t think that’s actually true. All of the demidogs didn’t come from dart, they came through the portal underground. If anything Dustin was proved slightly right, when they finally came face to face with dart in the tunnel dart recognized Dustin and rather than attacking let them pass and escape. It’s possible had Dustin not raised dart that would have been a different demidog and they all would have died.

Though I do agree if I was the showrunners I would have centered Dustin’s coming of age arc around the good and bad that was caused by raising dart instead of the how to get girls arc. You could have kept the cool mentor/mentee stuff between Steve and Dustin but have Dustin voice concern over dangering his friends and Steve could offer a “well did you mean to hurt your friends” and give a sometimes we make mistakes but what matters is your intention, and some times bad things happen for the greater good. Then have that conversation pay off when dart finally “spares” them so to speak and although Dustin made a mistake in ended up helping them because his intentions were pure.

The hair conversation on the tracks was one of my favorite parts.

The hair conversation on the tracks was one of my favorite parts.

But did you like it because those hair tips were great and funny. Or did you like it because Steve showed some vulnerability in a way that related to Dustin and made him feel confident.

On what do you base this? I debated between these two things and concluded that they all came from dart.

On what do you base this? I debated between these two things and concluded that they all came from dart.

In all the scenes with dart growing and shedding his skin he never once divided or laid eggs. We do however see that the mindflayer has been able to penetrate of of the gate and create a tunnel system underground that contains other types of monsters that spit at hopper.

Then there is the argument that the mindflayer seems to control the demidogs during the fight at the junkyard/lab but somehow dart still has free will at the point he chooses to let them go, most likely a plot hole but it could be because dart is the one slug will brought back with him and the other are ones the mindflayer has sent out.

Lastly I do think it’s possible will has been coughing up lots more slugs than just the one we see at the end of season one. We see him cough it up into his own sink and dart is found in Dustin’s trash can, dart also grows relatively quickly in the time we see him compared to when will coughed up the one in his sink.

None of those are perfect explainations but I think they are all more supported by the show then dart somehow multiplied into tons of individual demidogs.

Also, I just spotted, Season 2 Episode 2, during the group therapy session with Winters, a game of Dominion can be seen among some other board games in the background.

That never even crossed my mind. And thinking about it now I still don't see how you would come to that conclusion.

All of it.  Love it.

I'm now up to S4:E9 and I'm so confused with the parental situation ? I believed that Reddington never lied to her until he told Constantine/Kirk that Liz was his daughter ? I get that he said that he wasn't Liz's father, bc Sam was, but he also said that her father died the night of the fire. And if he was lying to Constantine, who would be her father? And then Tom's/Jacob's/Christopher's mother was so creepy, but I hope we get to see more of her and his past. He said in the hospital where Constantine was that he had chosen not to go back to his mother, in part because she abandoned him. But she didn't ? She thought he was dead ? I think that he doesn't want his identity to change again (and he's creeped tf out by her cheek stroke and "there's a fine line between love and hate"). He does need a job though, and she offered him one.

I also really like Tom's hair.

On Netflix there are 4 seasons, is there more that's not on Netflix?

S5 is on now.  I think your confusion will get cleared up by the end of S4.

Tom had his own spinoff for awhile.  Worth a watch.
