I've been playing the title theme for Them's Fightin' Herds for the past few days. I can't decide if it's a good song or not; I might be giving it a free pass because it's tangentially related to MLP.

I think it's pretty good.

And i just now realized the last two projects i backed have dynamic music systems. TFH and Yooka-Laylee. Ever since Banjo-Kazooie i have loved when games change the instruments based on circumstances.

Looks like E.T. has a very literal thinking process. Good grasp of arithmetic, though.

I deduce that a dime is worth more than 7.5 pennies.  I'm not prepared to admit how much more I know.

It's got to be 10p. 25p is a quarter, you aren't going to have 20p (too close to 25p) and anything else is too weird.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

It also helps to know that "dime" is distantly related to "decima," i.e. one-tenth (of a dollar).

I would have never guessed the connection between dime and decima.

I guess for that one it again helps to know that what we call a "penny" is properly a "cent," and that we call a tenth of a cent a "mil."  That makes it a bit more obvious.

Oops, I forgot today was a pizza party we got for contributing the most in our building to United Way. I went and got lunch anyway.

It's just as well. I don't believe in giving to United Way so missing out on this pizza party was apropos.

Perhaps this is an appropriate time to mention these people.  If your motivation for charitable giving is genuinely helping people, do it right.

I too would be this excited if it hadn't snowed in January or February.

I'm kidding, it never snows here. :(

1st snow of the year!!!!

Something wet falling from above for the last few days, resulting in ubiquitous formations of some gruesome porridge on the ground. So depressing

the absence of snow is depressing imo. even though snow itself isn't particularly, well, helpful.

So, i have been thinking about doing an online comic. Or rather, i have two ideas for online comics. Sadly, i'm not sure i am a good enough artist. Should i look for somebody who wants to draw my stuff? Where to even start? Or should i try to push myself to do it? Or should i maybe lower my expectations on how flashed-out my stuff has to look? There are a lot of webcomic formats that have a rather minimal style. Problem's just, my story isn't about one-strip jokes. Can i tell an actual story in a relatively simple style? Anybody knows examples that would help me?

I have been carrying the wish to do something like this around for years now. Maybe someone here has an idea. Thank you.

Of course, there is xkcd.

And if you think you can't tell a good story with a minimalist style, xkcd's Time has some disagreeing to do.

Another note, this is how Andrew Hussie, creator of Homestuck, started.

Short answer, you aren't going to be able to improve if you don't do anything.  I would definitely tell you to just go for it.

From what I've read around, it's extremely hard to find artists for webcomics, because it's really time consuming, and there is no money to be made in the short-mid term. Maybe if you already have a very good friend who also happens to know how to draw, otherwise I wouldn't count on it. You're better off drawing yourself.

Lots of webcomics start with very basic art style and evolve over the years. Gunnerkrigg Court immediately springs to mind as an extreme example, but things like Questionable Content or Order of the Stick experienced very noticeable improvements too.

Lot of webcomic artists will tell you to just do it.  If you have good story or good jokes, the art will hardly matter.  The practice of putting out a comic consistently will increase your drawing skill naturally.

Dinosaur Comics is a great example of a fun and funny web comic with virtually no artistic work needed at all.

A Softer World was another popular (and award-winning!) web comic that used somewhat abstract photography for a very different feel.

Depending on your story, you may not be able to get away with using the same image every week or using photography.  But you could probably make it work with just geometric shapes for different characters.  Art shouldn't be what stops you.
