Headline writing is generallly godawful in every imaginable way, but today on cnn.com I found the hardest-to-read headline I've seen in quite a while:

Quote
Tennis' tattooed teenage 'pit bull'

I don't know what this means, and I had to read it about ten times to figure out if there was an error or not.  I'm assuming it's actually grammatically correct, though, so apparently there is a "pit bull", that is a teenager, that has lots of tattoos, that is a professional tennis player.

It's incorrect. It should be "tennis's" because "tennis" isn't plural.

I think that's actually a style; some styles simply add only an apostrophe for possession to any noun ending in "s".  So it may be incorrect by some particular style, but it's not universally agreed upon.

However, visually I kept on wanting to associate the first ' (after "tennis") with the next ' (before "pit").  So I kept on reading

' tattooed teenage '

as being "inside" the quotes.  And then I couldn't reconcile the last '.

This is easy. The meaning is obvious.

The "tattooed" that is owned by "Tennis" just "teenaged" a "pit bull."

Perfect sense!

Instead of Al Jazeera reporter John Hendren, they accidentally booked comedian Jon Hendren for an interview about Edward Snowden.  He answered their questions as if they were about Edward Scissorhands and he actively talked about him having scissors for hands.  The interviewer didn't notice.

I've only heard "Well, I never!" In fiction relating to snooty rich people or olden times folk.

Today if I had been 5 minutes slower getting to my destination and/or stopped to get money out, I'd have been killed by a bus crash. Literally a bus crashed into a bunch of ATMs about 5 minutes after I was walking past them, and a few people were killed.

http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/live-boy-8-woman-killed-10189468 Scary stuff. Also the bus I got later was delayed because of htis.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

This is why the only Risk I play is Risk Legacy. That bullshit tactic doesn't fly so well there. And if the game is played for any length of time, Australia's probably a radioactive crater by now anyway.

Um, I'm pretty sure North America was fire and Europe was wind.  Africa and Asia are good.  To be fair I'm uncertain how the artist would have drawn Heart.

Actually I think that was supposed to be an Avatar the Last Airbender reference.

Well, when you have kicked the caffeine habit, it shows. I had some coffee just to keep it from going to waste, and I'm all sorts of buzzed from it. If I get a heart attack, avenge my death.

Has anyone played Undertale?
The game is just...I can't even say how good it is. The humor in it is right up this community's alley too.

Edit: it's also available directly from the creator's website if you don't have/want Steam.

Undertale is fantastic. I was honestly blown away by it, even though I was trying to set aside the hype while playing. I highly recommend it to anyone who used to play or still plays jrpgs. (And anyone else too; that audience is just more likely to appreciate it from the get-go)

Sadly it is one of those games in which explaining too much about why it's good would spoil a lot. (same can be said of Ghost Trick, which everyone should also play) I will say it has awesome characters, a wonderful atmosphere and soundtrack, and by the end of the game I'd be surprised if it didn't get to you either through humor or emotion (or both).

I'm intrigued, but I think their web designer (well, the person taht did the Steam page) needs to double check some things:

Buy Undertale  $9.99

Buy Undertale - Game + Soundtrack Bundle  $17.99

I'm glad you asked, because now I can explain it for the funnys.  Basically,

Buy Undertale - Game + Soundtrack Bundle

reads like "Product minus game plus soundtrack", which sounds to me like basically just the soundtrack.  The person wants to use an em-dash---like this one---but instead they used a hyphen (-), which when spaced like it is on the Steam page  is naturally read as a minus sign, especially when there is already a plus sign in the same expression.

But this also costs a lot more.  So you can pay $9.99 for product, or $17.99 for the product without the game, but you get a soundtrack.

That's not at all how I read.  Yeah, they probably should have used a colon or em-dash, but people use hyphens in place of dashes all the time, and I don't think it's common for people to list "bundles" with parts subtracted.

Anyway, thanks for mentioning this game.  I went to add it to my wishlist and discovered that Child of Light is 75% off, so I picked that one up.  I thought Steam was supposed to send emails when wishlist games went on sale, but whatever.

It's still incorrect. Plus, if you ever write "A - B + C" (white-space counted), it's weird for "-" to not be a minus sign.  Also, I was joking; I obviously knew what they meant.  But when I first saw it, I immediately thought the "-" was a minus sign (like, on initial glance).
