Uh, grammatically correct, sure
oh, good

Quote
That makes sense, but <C> and <D> sound a bit awkward.
yeah

Quote
You can drop "they were" from <D>.
that sounds wrong to me though. you think it's better?

Quote
I think it tries to say something different now?
I think so too, also it seems to attempt a comparison now without actually comparing anything.

Er, I guess just drop the "they":

"One of my recent finds (...) was the theory that most people (...) much more seldom were unaware of things that they appeared to ignore than were making contradicting decisions despite knowing about them."

Further,

First, do you need "the theory that"?  Is it really a theory that you've found (like, someone else's theory), or is this the observation you made?  In the latter case, you can drop "the theory that" as it just serves to extend the sentence.

Second, "much more seldom to X than Y" has a bit of an odd emphasis, because the thing that comes first is the thing not being done.  You could rephrase it so that the emphasis that Y is done more.

Possible rephrasing:

"One of my recent findings was that when people make contradictory decisions involving things that they appear to ignore, they are actually much more often doing so despite knowledge of those things, rather than simply being unaware of them. "

(I think the emphasis on "unaware" can be dropped, and on "despite" either kept or dropped.)

I'm struggling with the grammar of this sentence - can someone tell me if it's correct like this:

Quote
One of my recent finds (...) was the theory that most people (...) much more seldom were unaware of things that they appeared to ignore than they were making contradicting decisions despite knowing about them.

?

I am confused.

Are you trying to say something like the following?

"People sometimes seem to make contradictory decisions because they don't know something. I think, more often, people make contradictory decisions despite knowing enough to recognize that the decisions conflict."

edit: clarity.

This video cracks me up. This guy has a whole series of songs done in ASL--mostly Jonathon Coulton, which is fine by me. I've never read captions to dictate how the syntax of ASL is laid out. What's interesting is that sign language was my primary language growing up, but because I was learning English with all the other hearing students, I would only speak in sign with proper English grammar. This would slow me down, but I could spell really quickly. I never claim to know ASL, as what I communicated around the house was limited only to that house. It does explain why my mother had bad grammar when writing, though. ASL syntax is a bit different.

Also, NSFW.

"People sometimes seem to make contradictory decisions because they don't know something. I think, more often, people make contradictory decisions despite knowing enough to recognize that the decisions conflict."

not restrictively 'contradictory' decisions, but yes.

First, do you need "the theory that"?  Is it really a theory that you've found (like, someone else's theory), or is this the observation you made?  In the latter case, you can drop "the theory that" as it just serves to extend the sentence.

In this context it would be the latter; I added it because just saying "people do XX" is... well, you could always be wrong.

Possible rephrasing: (...)

I think I like that, though probably not literally. thanks!

I don't have time to mess around in Photoshop, but a caption did enter my head. Basically it boils down to, "Dude, I'm so baked right now."

Thoughts on Patron Reposado?

Never had it, but I did pick up some Herradura Reposado based on a top-10 list, and I was really impressed with it. I'm mostly a shooter because I hate the taste of alcohol. The faster it gets in my system, the better off I am. Of course, the problem with shooting is that it can be pretty rough on you. Therefore, I was really shocked when I tried my first Reposado and realized how smooth it was. It still tasted nasty, but the experience was much nicer than with cheap liquor.

And Patron is a quality name, so I'm sure it would be pretty good too.

I can confirm it's quite smooth.  Great sipping tequila, so I assume you'll enjoy shooting it.

But really, if you are doing shots to get drunk, just buy something cheap.

I had to quote both message to see what Awaclus did.  It seems the only difference was that my link had  "?attredirects=0" at the end of it. So why does it include that when I click "copy link address"?

PS: thanks Awaclus. Maybe the card images in my fan expansion thread will be visible to more people now.

So. How quickly do you guys think mathematical knowledge/skills deteriorate?
I'm asking, because I'm changing majors and am having to take a lot more math starting next semester. The highest math course I've taken was Business Calculus 2 years ago, which I got an A in.

I know there's a lot of math heads on this forum. I vaguely remember matrices, and feel like I could pick up derivatives and most of the graphing stuff pretty quickly again. I don't know...I'll probably be less worried when I'm actually in the thick of it. And I have plans to use Khan Academy to refresh my memory.

I guess what I want to hear is that higher mathematics isn't the specter that popular belief makes it out to be.

If it's been a while since you've taken a math class, you'll probably be surprised at how much you've forgotten, but it won't take you more than a few weeks to be completely comfortable with it again.  I hadn't taken physics since my first year of college, and when I had to study it for a new job in September, I was amazed at how much I had forgotten.  It was like it all looked so familiar, and when I thought about it a bit I could remember how to do things, but it wasn't like I just knew how to do everything off the top of my head anymore.  It didn't take much practice though before I got back to that point.

So if you were good at math before, you'll be fine.  You might panic at the beginning because you feel like you've forgotten a lot, but it will come back to you really quickly.  I don't think you actually lose problem solving skills by being out of practice (though you don't improve them either), it's just that you might forget some information, and you'll be slower at things because you haven't had to use that information in a long time.

I'm assuming from your description that you're taking something like differential equations or multivariable, something closely related to the calculus class you took before.  If it's something completely unrelated like number theory or graph theory then you shouldn't be worried at all (I'm not guaranteeing you'll do well in those kinds of classes, but if you don't it won't be because you're out of practice).
