I guess there's a new video game coming out that will be a big deal? I'm waiting for Fallout 4.

I am waiting for the game that will make me feel again like the first time I played Golden Sun.

...I write things like this and I realize that I am old despite being young.

I recently played through Golden Sun and Lost Age. They were pretty good but there were some things that annoyed the hell out of me that I just can't get past.

That's how I feel about Phantom Brave.

I couldn't get into Golden Sun. I tried, but the intro was interminable. I guess I'm spoiled, but it's nice when a game throws you right into the action and saves some exposition for later.

It was more a comment about the fact that you lose that capacity to feel awed when you are not a kid anymore. That game was magical for mini-me. Much more than the other games I had played before.

With some distance, the game itself is just a well-executed jRPG. It has an original approach to classes, some cute puzzles, beautiful graphics for its era, and more random encounters than any game should have, but the last one comes with the genre. Oh, and the inventory interface was so good, it spoiled me for all other games afterwards. I didn't mind the cutscenes: when you are a kid the limiting resource is not time, but money, so I enjoyed them.

The second was nice because of the new perspective on the World events, but the gameplay had lost a little bit of the spirit from the first one.

Speaking of nostalgia, I loved Secret of Mana when I was a kid. Looking back now, I still like its characters, world, art style, and music. But the combat is just a list of things not to do in that kind of adventure game.

Probably the first jRPG I played was Chrono Trigger and I played the hell out of it. So I guess I'm spoiled because of it.

I've never played a JRPG, but the first CRPG I played was Geneforge 1, eight years ago. It is still my favorite RPG.

Chrono Trigger is so great. It ages really well, maybe because it didn't have random encounters. My first JRPG was FF7, and although I enjoyed it at the time, I think the random encounters would get annoying if I played it again.

Morbid humor is like a right leg: some people have it, and some people don't.

Sorry, I could not take any more videogame talk in a non-videogame thread.

I remember leveling up all the weapon and magic skills to like 12 or whatever.  so much grinding..

Did you play Secret of Evermore?  That was a heck of a grinding system.

Secret of Evermore had a lot going for it. I haven't played it quite as recently as Secret of Mana, but I don't remember as much grinding. Wait, it's coming back to me. Yes, grinding magic (or alchemy) could be extremely tedious in both games. And it's worse in Evermore because it uses ingredients rather than MP, so you had to buy or find more rather than just sleeping in an inn.

Anyhow, the grinding isn't mandatory in either game, though it helps. Secret of Evermore had a lot of the same combat issues that Secret of Mana had, although at least, being a single-player game, it didn't have Mana's fundamentally flawed multi-player elements.

Well, when I was a kid I'd play games to the maximum.. I'd always have to max out all levels and skills.. all characters to Lv. 99, etc.  Evermore was a pain because of alchemy.. you'd have to run all over getting components for stuff and use abilities over and over.

I'm considering buying a PS4.  This is mainly due to my brother-in-law being a Call of Duty fanatic and wanting me to join his team online.

For reference, I've been a Nintendo guy forever (although not seriously since Gamecube) and have an XBox360 for kids/kinect games.

Do I do it?  If I do, do I get get Destiny?  It looks awesome, but then the reviews by gamers panned it.

Obtain a PS2/backwards compatible PS3, play Kingdom Hearts, if you like 1 + 2 then you can start preparing for KH3 finally coming out.

By Nintendo guy, do you mean Nintendo platformers or Nintendo RPGs, or something else entirely?

The Last of Us Remastered. That should be reason enough for you to get a PS4. If you don't allready have a PS3 and the original game.
