it's impossible to even write german poetry that sounds this good. if you try it, and I had to in school n stuff, it sounds lengthy, awkward, and forced.

I mean, tastes are what they are, but there is gorgeous poetry in German.

actually, this is probably the poem that I was going to use in response to Awaclus' post.  this is established german poetry, and, well, I wouldn't describe it as gorgeous. this specific poem to me is particularly unimpressive, because it uses dialogue that noone would ever say in this way. It doesn't feel believable. and it doesn't read well.

Would you prefer some Nena?

Neunundnuenzig Kriegsminister
Streichholz und Benzinkanister
Hielten sich für schlaue Leute
Witterten schon fette Beute
Riefen Krieg und wollten Macht
Mann, wer hätte das gedacht
Dass es einmal soweit kommt
Wegen neunundneunzig Luftballons

well, it sounds clunky and somewhat awkward. for a poem that doesn't take itself seriously and is mostly meant to be funny, that's not a bad thing. these kinds of poems work decently I'd say.

not to  mention that there are words in english that are literally missing in german.

Well, that's because English aggressively steals words from other languages. If we don't have a word for something, we find a language that does.

All languages do that.

I have heard tell that French in particular does not. That there is a movement to keep French pure. Is this not the case?

People bitch about the "intrusion" of English words in the French language yeah, but it's utterly stupid and mostly without effect. We have adopted a lot of English words. Then the Académie Française comes up with French words for "hashtag" or "marketing", and no one uses them.
That's what I'd heard from my fiancée (whose course on language policy last semester used France as a case study). So there's a political (or at least organisational) push to create some kind of "pure" French, but it's not really reflected in society's use of the language. Similar to attempts in other countries to create some kind of national language and force local dialects out.

In terms of which languages sound "nicer" than others, I think German sounds angrier because it I always think of it as having a lot of hard or abrasive consonant sounds like "t", "d" and "sch", whereas a language like French tends to evoke softer sounds (like "ll" which is pronounced almost like a "y" sound). I also find many Chinese dialects sound angry to some extent (Cantonese more than Mandarin), and there a lot of the words are very syllabic which probably produces a very short, curt sounding language.

Peanut butter is my go-to example of foods that should NOT be natural. It tastes worse than regular and separates. You mean every time I open a jar I have to stir it? No thank you.

Speaking of schadenfreude, I saw a video posted of a toddler "playing" with an iguana. I use quotes because the child smacked the lizard around and roughly manhandled it to the point that I feared for some snapped bones. Then he proceeded to taunt it by waving his finger in front of its mouth. Finally, it got a lucky strike and latched right onto that little shit's finger. I generally do not like the sound of children wailing, but this was actually welcomed.

And then I was wondering, "Who the fuck videos a child abusing an animal without interference?"

I hope that child learned a lesson about the iguana, but he clearly has some shitty role models, so he has a long ways to go to learn to be a decent human. I hope he can overcome his environment.

English still has a number of failings though. The one that most bothers me is the huge number of meanings for "love": which can express the type of feeling you have for a restaurant you've visited a few times, for your family, or for someone with whom you are romantically involved (with the whole aspect of sexuality). The confusion and apprehension this linguistic failing creates is extraordinarily frustrating.

Especially when my main definition is to choose to put another's needs above your own (a.k.a. not a feeling at all (of course, there are other definitions which are feelings that I use)).

I've heard that Icelandic doesn't borrow words. If they need a new word, they either make one up or translates a foreign one. I'm not sure if this is true or not. But they have some very weird words.

I've been spelling gemütlich wrong for a while apparently. Comfortable is what comes closest to it, but you'll agree that it's not exactly it ?

I'm... not sure. I think it's pretty safe to assume that I know exactly what gemütlich means. I use comfortable pretty much as a synonym.

where do you think lies the difference?

gemütlich has a notion of warmth associated with it, and the idea of "home". So it's more precise than just "comfortable". I would translate comfrotable as bequem in most situations. You couldn't apply gemütlich to something like "comfort food" for example, nor would you say that your seat in a hotel is gemütlich. You would probably bequem (or komfortabel for that matter).

Maybe that's just where I lived (Bonn) and the word has a simpler meaning elsewhere, but I'm pretty sure I've heard gemütlich being referred to as untranslateable by other people.
