I think French sounds very weird and aggressive. And kind of ugly. Most people don't agree with me. And also, I don't mean it as an insult to the French speakers. It's just that I don't find it very nice to listen to.

Comment oses-tu ?

Obviously I don't mean it as an insult either when I say I hate English. And it might be an overstatement, but I never, ever, hear or read a sentence in English and think "that's a beautiful way of saying it". Which I do often in French and German.

man, I think the exact opposite is true. well, I don't know about french, because I don't speak it well enough, but sentence structure in german really sucks. it's so much better in English.

it's impossible to even write german poetry that sounds this good. if you try it, and I had to in school n stuff, it sounds lengthy, awkward, and forced. german. sucks. not to  mention that there are words in english that are literally missing in german.

not to  mention that there are words in english that are literally missing in german.

Well, that's because English aggressively steals words from other languages. If we don't have a word for something, we find a language that does.

gemüdlich is another German word that doesn't really exist in French (or in English AFAIK).

Every language has these little untranslatable words.

I think I like German because I like long, complicated sentences. I dislike English for its relative grammatic simplicity.

I have heard tell that French in particular does not. That there is a movement to keep French pure. Is this not the case?

If you "have to try" writing poems, of course it's going to sound horrible regardless of the language. If they told everyone at school to compose a funk song, would you compare them with Mirrorthrone and conclude that symphonic black metal is better than funk?

My favorite languages are Dutch and Chinese. I can't speak either language and understand very little of both, but they sound incredibly awesome.

People bitch about the "intrusion" of English words in the French language yeah, but it's utterly stupid and mostly without effect. We have adopted a lot of English words. Then the Académie Française comes up with French words for "hashtag" or "marketing", and no one uses them.

No way, when it comes to ancient languages greek is so much better than Latin.

It's true. I heard it from a pretty credible source.

actually, this is probably the poem that I was going to use in response to Awaclus' post.  this is established german poetry, and, well, I wouldn't describe it as gorgeous. this specific poem to me is particularly unimpressive, because it uses dialogue that noone would ever say in this way. It doesn't feel believable. and it doesn't read well.

Poetry isn't really concerning itself with sounding believable, that's entirely beside the point...

I've been spelling gemütlich wrong for a while apparently. Comfortable is what comes closest to it, but you'll agree that it's not exactly it ?

that completely depends on the perceiving perspective. I read this poem, and I can't stand the dialogue, that takes me out of the experience. though I'm of course biased because this is a classic piece to cover in school.

I really like English for its huge variety of potential words for similar concepts that allows for a number of nuanced meanings. It is, of course, difficult for me to compare other languages, since I speak none very well and certainly no where close to as well as I know English.

My perception though (and please someone with more data correct me if I'm wrong), is that English has made a habit of stealing words from other languages (much more so than other languages) and was already a mash of romance languages onto some kind of old German to begin with (which just makes English spelling a nightmare). I think this means that English usually has a wider variety of words to express the nuances of a topic. My dad used to live in the Netherlands, and commented that Dutch seemed to have far fewer words to express things. Of course, his opinion might also have been colored by being a native English speaker.

English still has a number of failings though. The one that most bothers me is the huge number of meanings for "love": which can express the type of feeling you have for a restaurant you've visited a few times, for your family, or for someone with whom you are romantically involved (with the whole aspect of sexuality). The confusion and apprehension this linguistic failing creates is extraordinarily frustrating.

Also I'm taking Elementary German this semester and enjoying it a fair bit. Except for genders. Those just seem entirely arbitrary.

I'm... not sure. I think it's pretty safe to assume that I know exactly what gemütlich means. I use comfortable pretty much as a synonym.

where do you think lies the difference?
