Today I learned that the Stanford Prison Experiment is actually kinda BS.  The scientist in charge of it was the prison superintendent: he expected and encouraged guards to be sadistic, imposed arbitrary non-prison-like conditions (like not allowing prisoners to use their names), and overemphasized the guards that acted sadistically even though most of the guards were normal.

Not being true to a prison environment does not negate the change in demeanor among the guards and prisoners. They were just put through a more extreme scenario.

But overemphasizing the guards' sadism does say a lot about the accepted outcome of the experiment.

Which reminds me that I should dig out my Unknown Armies scenario that I wrote based on the Stanford prison experiment.

The short version is, there was virtually nothing scientific about that experiment. It's a thing that happened, but pretty much every single conclusion most people draw from it is baseless.

But if you tell them that, they will shock the hell out of you.

...isn't that the Milgram experiment?

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

People laughed when I suggested a Galaxy Trucker PBF*. People laughed when I said I was serious**. Now look who's laughing***.

Coming soon**** to your Forum Games section: The very first Galaxy Trucker, PBF.

*This is probably not true. Most likely they just read my posts all like 'oh Tables is trying to be funny again.
**I never said this, and so once again, people probably didn't laugh at the thing I didn't say.
***The answer to this one is probably the same as the above two. I mean I'm not laughing, are any of you? Honestly these rhetoical questions are terrible. Heck they aren't even question!

Just to make sure I re-looked up the Milgram experiment, and by my extensive research (meaning, only Wikipedia), that one is actually a legitimate result and has been replicated.

At first, I was like, "14 minutes? Ugh. I'll just watch a little bit to get the gist."

Then I was like, "Well, I can probably move on. What do you mean I've watched 13 minutes already?"

It's funny because FTTW doesn't know what radians are.

I was in the middle of editing some dotfiles when I realized I actually care about my shell configuration, and want things like shorter aliases for "git checkout" and "git status" and a specific color scheme for vim. Suddenly I feel like much less of a UNIX noob.

I thought about that when I saw your post on BGG earlier, but it might be better to just wait for the app to come out.
Then again, it doesn't look like it will feature the expansions from what I saw, which I'm kinda bummed about, since that was one of the main things I was looking forward to. I rarely find people to play the base game with, yet alone the expansions :(
So maybe we should do a PBF with the expansions.

I mean, I thought that would be funnier and easier to say than continuing with the prison one, and the two experiments are sort of used by laymen to conclude the same thing (that people are bastards).  I know it was a different experiment.
