Well of all things, can it be really?
Yes, no, ho-hi, oh my eye;
My mind may be wandering, but I confess
I believe it is Old Deuteronomy

Regarding relatives. In Swedish pretty much every relative is a combination of words for the closest relative. So we have mother (mor), father (far), sister (syster), brother (bror), daughter (dotter) and son (son). So my maternal grandmother is mormor (mother mother) and my grandfather would be morfar (mother father). My paternal uncle would be farbror (father brother), however aunts have derived a bit from what you expect, due to syster being a two syllable word. So my paternal aunt is faster derived from farsyster (father sister), and the maternal counterpart is moster derived from morsyster (mother sister). Nieces and nephews are systerdotter (sister daughter), brorsdotter (brother's daughter [I have no idea why this one is possessive]), systerson (sister son) and brorson (brother son). Grandchildren are usually just called barnbarn (children children), but nobody will give it a second thought if you talk about your sonson (son son) or dotterdotter (daughter daughter) or something like that. Cousins and further away are just cousins, though.

Regarding relatives.

Cousins and further away are just cousins, though.

In norway that depends on where you live; søskenbarn (sibling children) is the standard term for all cousins in the western area, while kusine (female cousin) / fetter (male cousin) is mostly used on the eastern side. Thanks to the capital being eastern and all kids having watched tv from Oslo all their lives, a westerner will understand kusine/fetter, but an easterner will be utterly confused at søskenbarn.

Unlike sweden we don't specify our aunts and uncles; tante/onkel no matter which side. Mormor/morfar/farmor/farfar specify grandparents, but we can also say bestefar/bestemor/besteforeldre (grandfather, grandmother, grandparents) - lit. "best parent". It's also more of an affectionate term, and is occasionally used also about a nice elderly whether or not they have grandchildren, children or even are related to the speaker at all.

Barnebarn (children children aka grandchildren) is the same - but sønnesønn (son son) or datterdatter (daughter daughter) is archaic if used at all.

One step up from the grandparents are 'oldemor'/'oldefar' - greatgrandparents, literally elder parents. Then it's tipp-oldemor, tipp-tipp-oldemor, etc, etc, etc... And for other stranger terms; grandtante/grandonkel is your parents aunt and uncle.

Okay, I've toyed around with the idea of moving to Sweden, and this just tilts me toward that way some more.

I'm quarter Swedish, though that's not my sole reason for looking into the move. It seems like a really neat country, and it sounds accommodating for unilingual barbarians (assuming that one language is English). Of course, I'd seriously try to learn the language, though my endeavors into Spanish and Japanese have shown me that I am a much better reader than a listener. I give blank stares when people speak to me in a different language, even if I've studied it.

This is elegant in its straightforwardness. Is Swedish a language that is this logical in most areas?

If you know English, which I kind of assume you do, getting by in larger cities isn't hard here. If you want to live in the countryside, you might have to learn Swedish.

I'm not a country kind of guy anyway.

So, my cultural exposure is limited to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy (I forget the official trilogy name). It seems like northern Sweden just prepares itself for shitty winters, which sounds like something Alaskans would do. I've not been in either place. In fact, the most northern I've gone when it was winter was in Boston, and that doesn't have a perpetual winter ready state. I've only swung up into Canada once, and it wasn't winter.

I'm used to shitty winters lasting no more than a couple of months. Then it's shitty summers 6 months later. I get all the bad weather but nothing prolonged.

So I've had a fever pretty much all week and now I have a rash but for the most part I feel perfectly fine, especially in the morning. I was really worried I wouldn't be able to Penn State for ARML (a very fun math contest) this weekend and I was sad but today I went to the doctor and he was like you should totally go just don't kiss anyone or they'll get sick. Now I am happy.

I am going to ARML this weekend too! I'm going to the one in Iowa though. I'm not sure that it's even closer, but I guess it's a midwest thing (I live in southern Michigan).

But what's the point of going to a math contest if you can't kiss anyone?

What's the best free antivirus software these days? I've been using avast! so far, but it kind of defeats the purpose if the antivirus software I'm using is a spyware/adware itself, so I want to try something else. I'm considering Comodo and Qihoo at the moment, does anyone have any experience about them and are there any better alternatives?

talking about US editions throughout

Anyone know when Dominion "upgraded" the art on the box cover? I'm going through the store's old demos (which we got when the game was new), and I've noticed there's more detail on the current Hasbro USA version (easiest way to tell the difference is that there's a little cart on the road to the village bottom-right on the Hasbro cover, whereas the road is empty on the original version). However, I can't tell via BGG if this was true of the older, most-common Altenberger printings. All I've been able to confirm is that the first and second print run of Dominion has the "less detail" version, and the current Hasbro has the "more detail."

EDIT: This is a fool's errand. There appear to be a million variations on this art. The Brazilian version appears to use the "horse cart" version, but the art for the German special edition does too, except the knight bottom-left doesn't have a helmet in that one!

EDIT 2: Apparently no-helmet knight appears on the front of the rulebook of some (older?) versions.

This has been Voltaire, your guide to the world of facts.

Well, the ones that contain even remotely useful information (such as updates etc) aren't too annoying. The ones advertising their VPN every time I'm trying to watch porn or download torrents are.

Well Friday night I felt horrible so maybe this was a bad idea but I felt okay during the contest and performed decently I guess. Today I went to the hospital and they checked out my blood and stuff and apparently I have Honech-Schölein Purpura. The cause is unknown, but probably it's some issue where my immune system got a little too excited fighting off an infection. Now the blood vessels in my ankles (and a little bit in my fingers too I think) are swollen and it bruised my ankles from the inside. Apparently I'll be sick for at least another week but oh well. It's not the most uncomfortable illness and my urine didn't have any blood in it which means my kidneys are probably fine.

I made a discovery. Each draw of a card costs $2. Moat and Courtyard both cost $2, with a draw gain of +1. Smithy is $4, with a draw gain of +2. Hunting Grounds is $6, with a draw gain of +3. You can infer a draw gain of +4 is an $8 card. Proof of this? Ranger is $4, and you get a draw gain of +4 half the time.

I'm trying to put prices on vanilla bonuses right now.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

(4) Myth: Each functional component of a card has a cost. Add those costs up, and that's what the whole card should cost.

It might be tempting to say every +Buy costs $1, and every +Card costs $2, every Curse attack costs $3, and so on. But it doesn't work like that. For example, add +2 Actions to Woodcutter, which costs $3, and you get Festival, which costs $5. You might then think that each +Action should increase a card's cost by $1. But add just a single +Action to Moat, and now you've got something strictly superior to Laboratory. At minimum, it's a $6 card, up from $2. Add +2 Actions to Moat, and you probably have to go to $7, an increase of $5.

True. When you put an extra +1 card on Hamlet, it's balanced at $4. When you put it on Peddler, it's balanced at $10.
