I went paintballing for the first time in my life. Now I'm pretty sore...

I remember the only time I went paintballing. Ah, good times. I got screwed first round, and the second round, I was the last on my team to survive, and everyone surrounded me, but I like hid and I shot some dude in the chest who was bull rushing me. I had this sense of elation, and saw the brief moment of surprise on his face, and then that fun didn't last long, because then I had 50 bullets pelt me all at once.

Still, good times.

TIL that in some places, kids receive "pen licenses" at school before they are allowed to write in pen.  And apparently it's a big deal.

That kinda happened to me, although it wasn't a big deal, and I don't remember the details of how it worked any more. But I do remember that people were eventually given their 'handwriting pen' seemingly at random. And then when we got to secondary school everyone just used a biro anyway (well some people used a fountain pen but only a few)

^ One of the posts about it online talked about how only a few people got the license and they had a school-wide assembly to give the award.  I guess that varies by region as well.

I've moved recently, and I am seeing all these brown and black birds, with blue and green iridiscent spots on their back, orange beak, slightly smaller than a pigeon. They are quite common, but when I ask people about them, they have no idea what they are. I am assuming they must be some sort of migratory bird, because otherwise I would expect someone to know. It's driving me crazy.

Take a photo.  Somebody will know.

Where are you now?

Finally found someone that knew (but he was quick to point out that he only knew because his father likes feeding birds). They are starlings. After a quick Wikipedia trip, my curiosity is sated.

Starlings are cool.  There are some amazing videos of giant murmurations wheeling through the sky.

Where are you now?

Bodega Bay?

I was asking pacovf because it could help with identifying the birds.

Sorry, that was just a joke. Hitchcock's "The Birds" takes place in Bodega Bay. Maybe the movie is more present in my memory than in most people's.

Yeah, huh. I really should emphasis the 'not a big deal' part. Like, it was maybe a minute or two, once per week, I don't think there was a certificate or anything. I think the names of people who had the pen were put up on a small display board (which of course grew from just a few to the entire class, over the course of a term or two), and it was just done with the people in the class, which was just under 30 I think.

I can't understand why it would be something you make a big deal out of, at least without seeing some of the logic behind why it's being done. For example, is it from a school in a socially deprived area, or one with low adult literacy rates? In that case bigging up kids whose writing is clear and coherent is a great thing, since it encourages literacy, as well as letting these kids achieve something. Hm, I'm curious now about why it was a big thing.

Some neat sci-fi/horror stories. If you don't like the first one, skip to the second. The first introduces the idea of antimemetics, but the format is a bit dry.

That reminds me of the Doctor Who thingies that you immediately forget if you look away from them.

It's pretty cool though.

I recently realized that the Weeping Angels from Dr Who have the same main characteristics as the ghosts from the Super Mario games: Moving only when unwatched and pointy teeth.

Wouldn't it be great if, when a Boo touched you, it rewound all your progress and you had to start from the beginning of the game? Or better yet, it put you back in a previous Mario game?

No. No it would not.

I'm playing Super Mario Brothers, not Dark Souls.

Weeping Angels are some of the coolest things to come out of modern culture though. Man, they're awesome.

It's a shame Doctor Who really sucks now.

I was joking too. Someone should make a Dark Souls version of Mario though. If you get hit twice, you die and have to restart the whole game. If you get hit once, you lose your ability for the duration of the level. You regain all health and abilities during the next stage.

There would be different classes based on different skills.

Fire Class

Shoot fireballs to kill enemies from a distance. Enemies can two-shot you, so this is nice to have with swarm enemy levels. Bosses only take a quarter damage from these fireballs like all Mario games, so attacking constantly with fireballs will take longer.

Jumping Class

Gain a double jump. This is nice, so you can avoid confrontations with enemies, and jump over pits more effectively, which can one shot you. Great for those side scrolling levels.

Health Class

You are faster, and you can survive three hits. If you get hit once, you lose your extra speed for the duration of the level. This is a forgiveness class, but you get no other benefits besides a speed buff, which can be a two-edged sword.

Boss-Bane Class

Bosses take double the damage to your jump attacks. This shortens boss battles, which are a big threat to your livelihood.

The game could take on the look of older games - same ghost house, but: WiiU/Wii looks -> N64 looks -> SNES looks -> NES looks -> Gameboy looks -> Game&Watch :P

Man, played Dominion last Sunday for probably the first time in several months. Still such a fun game, but it just doesn't come out that often anymore.

Part of that is that I still haven't consolidated all my cards yet. I have everything prior to Dark Ages crammed into my Intrigue box, but Dark Ages and Guilds are still in separate boxes. I don't even own Adventures yet.

I am not worthy to be on this forum.

Someone announced that he's an uncle again as his nephew was just born.

I was about to respond jokingly, "Did you stop being an uncle?" But I didn't know him enough to rule out that perhaps he had a sibling whose child died, which would make him no longer an uncle.

Unlikely, but I'm not about to open that door of pain just for a gag.
