I am not a gamer myself.

Whuh? What do all your posts encouraging us to tell you more about the latest videogames mean, then?

Most people can't install an operating system.  Most people can barely install a printer when given step-by-step IKEA-style instructions.  And since these same people can't put a computer together from scratch, the computer is going to have whatever OS comes pre-packaged with it.  It's not going to get changed.

Well, you can get someone to install your IKEA furniture, printer or OS for you. That's just a one-time thing. If you live close to a university with CS, or maybe even math, it is likely you can get someone to do it for free (is this true everywhere? I guess I was extrapolating the situation here without real knowledge).

The real lesson here is that banks, companies, utilities, etc. NEVER send you weird emails.  They never have attachments.  They universally say, come to our website and look at it.  Much of the time they don't even include a link; they force you to type out www.bankofamerica.com or whatever.  This is because they want to distinguish themselves from phishing scams.

If I get an email that doesn't look like all of these other emails, I never open it.
I get an email from my mobile carrier every month with the bill attached as a pdf.

.. or alternatively I'm very stupid and in serious trouble right now, huh?

Which carrier?

@soulnet, I did suggest Linux.

"I don't have an account, so I opened the link to my account." What?

I'm sure this is something that victims of phishing come to realize. Logically speaking, how can you be instructed to log into an account that you don't have?

That's where the fear comes in. People don't like the idea of being charged for something they didn't buy into. I've seen two main motivators for these types of scams: Fear and greed.

The Nigerian prince scam easily preys upon your greed. "Golly gee, I just have to provide a bank account to temporarily hold 30 million dollars, and I'll get a hundred grand out of it. Easy money!"

Bill phishing scemes play upon your fear. "Unauthorized access that could get my credit card turned off?! ABORT! ABORT! Let me log in real quick and tell you to cancel it!"

Both of which can be overcome with simple logic, but that's why they use dodgy language—to make you forget the logical side momentarily so that you're ruled by your greed or fear.

Sometimes it doesn't take much to make an otherwise rational person give in to his irrational side.

@soulnet, I did suggest Linux.

Sorry, I must have overlooked it.

Sometimes it doesn't take much to make an otherwise rational person give in to his irrational side.

Usually, a not so big amount of alcohol would do it. Or a really attractive prospective partner. Or a playful girl taking your hat.

Something I was just learning in Driver's Ed, is that alcohol affects judgment instantly.

Ol' Driver Eddy's always been a shady guy. The kind to slip you Viagra and steal your golf clubs just to drive a point home. He was quite motivated. I was never clear on the point though, other than puns.

It certainly seems unlikely to me that you could get someone to install Linux on a box for you for free, in the US.  Plus you have to spend time to do it.  It's just not worth it when you can start using the computer on Windows immediately.

The only people who would even think to install Linux are going to be able to do it themselves.

You can just download Linux.  I don't quite get how you do it, but you download it, then put it on something (like a thumb drive or something), then load it right when you start up the computer.

LUG hosts Linux installfests each quarter on Saturday of second week. If you want help installing Linux or just want to eat and hang out, come to installfest!

I am sure there are plenty more LUGs that do more or less the same.

I don't understand why computers don't just come with Linux (say, Ubuntu) installed.

My guess is that at least some parts do not have official drivers for Linux and the manufacturer (of the final computer, which usually buys most of the parts) needs official drivers for everything in order to offer some kind of warranty. In here, if you buy a computer from a place that builds it for you (which is less usual nowadays when laptops are used for everything), there are plenty that offer Linux. At some point, Dell offered Linux for some models too. The installation may be part of what stops the majority of people from using it, but it is not the main problem. The main problem is people not willing to try and being convinced by the marketing that windows is the "user friendly" option.

I recently switched to Linux, it's very refreshing after dealing with Windows 8...
