Return a card from the trash to the supply

Is there any reason why this effect would be broken on a card?

It would be a real factor in games with both trashers and cursers, especially Sea Hag.

The card I'm thinking of doing is:

Diggings:
Action - $4
+1 Card
+2 Actions
Return a card from the trash to the supply.
---
When you gain this, if it is your Action phase, you may play it immediately.

I wanted to make it more interesting with Remodel type cards and there aren't that many workshop type cards so there's another little effect.

I'm not sure why you have the reaction, it seems powerful.

But in regards to just the supply returning, what about in games with no trashing?

Oh.  Now I get the reaction.   Doesn't seem like a bad idea overall.

In games with no trashing and/or gaining, it's just a village for $4.  Actually, in a game with no trashing, Fortress is just a village for $4 too!

Why not make it mandatory, like Noble Brigand?

I think in games with cursers where there is only light trashing it would be super powerful and rather annoying. Its sorta like a slow ambassadr in these cases. Overall its a great idea I think, but it being a village is what will give it play. I dont think the idea could stand very well alone.

Basically so you can still choose to top deck it with armory if you're so inclined, as well as other cards that specify locations (in my set that includes special mats). As for not limiting it to the action phase, +1 Card isn't much good when you buy the card normally. The set I'm putting it in has a couple of opportunities to gain the card when it isn't your turn, but mostly it would be a curiosity. The real problem is I need to specify what getting +Actions means when it isn't your turn and other annoyances.

In general I think "you may" is overrated by Donald X and others in terms of how much it overcomplicates cards. Being forced to do something can create confusion and frustration just as much as having a choice does.

I don't understand the allure of returning stuff from the trash to the Supply. It extends the game and makes Curse slogs more painful. Are either of those things fun?

Long games can be fun, and with the card being a village it may very well be a case of having a little longer to set up an engine. Also a game where deck thinning is available but Curses are a persistent threat seems like it could lead to some interesting scenarios. This card also has a lot of potential for obscure plays.

Mainly I'm just wondering whether the card is interesting enough as just a village with the play on gain. Pandemonium needed another village

I don't think returning trashed cards to supply is big enough to be worth it, or at least on this card. In games with trashing and cursing, what would happen is that you either see-saw with curses for the rest of the game, or the player who trashes faster can snowball even more than they usually can by handing out more curses. The latter is actually less likely than the see-saw, but the see-sawing doesn't sound that fun.

Also, I think the on gain reaction is significantly better than it looks like. Workshop turns into a Village that gains you a village, for example. To be fair, Procession-Fortress is also pretty nutty, but I'd be worried about letting terminals turn into villages.

yea, I'm afraid I agree with this. Your idea is unique, short, and probably balanced, but unfortunately not fun.

The on gain interacts with the following cards:

Workshop
Feast
Remodel

Ironworks
Upgrade

Smugglers

University

Expand
Forge

Remake
Horn of Plenty (+Black Market)
Jester

Develop
Haggler (+ Black Market)
Border Village

Hermit (+Cost reducer)
Armory
Procession
Catacombs
Graverobber
Rogue
Dame Natalie (+Cost reducer)
Altar

Stonemason
Butcher

Black Market
Governor

Is that enough to make the card worthwhile without the trash recycling?

From my own set, it interacts with:
Bargain
Blacksmith
Repair
Package
Patrol
Conqueror
Pariah
Whittler

Also Bargain and Repair have reactions that open it up to gainers that specify specific cards

From Dominion: Enterprise (which I hold in higher esteem than even some official sets)
Redistrict
Mill Town
Committee
Craftsman
Exchange
