Buying the last province

In a 2 player game, Daniel is ahead of his opponent by x points, and it's his turn. His hand is gold silver silver copper province, and there's only one province left. What is the maximum value of x such that buying this last province can cause Daniel to lose the game? (My answer, a number with no explanation, is below spoiler tags - I can't guarantee that no one will find a higher number!)

... and it's his turn.

And he is not possessed?

@Dstu
I had not thought of that! If we allow that he is possessed, you can get a higher answer - at least 30.

The only thing I can think of, and it's nowhere near your answer, is that the province pile is fully embargoed resulting in Daniel taking 10 curses. That gives a net of -4 points, and assuming it is his turn gives an answer of four.

Solution if he is possessed:
He buys the province +6
+7 Gardens
+8 Silk Road
+16 Fairgrounds

Just to be clear:
This is his hand at the start of his turn?
He has no duration cards in play?

Solution without possession:
Province + 10x embargo = -4
Fool's Gold > Gold
8x Fairgrounds -> -16

Is one allowed to use haggler, with possession? Then it would be
+7*3 gardens (21+ cards gained)
+7*3 silk road (9 victory cards gained)
+7*4 fairgrounds (new cards are BV, Gold, Province,Duchy, and two other actions)
+8*11 Duchy/Duke (Only had Duchies)
+7*4 Vineyards(12 actions gained)

Either VIneyards or Fairgrounds can be bumped up one. Though considering this, one could have gained the silk roads or gardens using haggler/BV, meaning that they could have most of the cards in the supply, which would make the total much higher.

10 KC'd embargos (there's no "if you do..") would give him -24 on a province buy, no? With the -16 from fool's gold->gold->fairgrounds, I get 40. Unless I ignored a bit in the manual saying no more than 10 embargo tokens can be placed.

King's Court Embargo as many times as you want, but there's still only 10 curses in the supply.

It's 4 am, I can't sleep and I just got up from bed to correct myself. Sometimes I have these complete brain malfunctions..

Carry on.

AJD's last post is actually a really nice metaphor for life.
