When should you use Fool's Gold's reaction ability?

Actually, there's very little to say here that's not already in the title. I almost never use it, but won a game using it this morning when my opponent bought a province early and I had three in hand. Usually it causes me a little angst, then I decide not to use it, because hey, I've committed to this fool's gold strategy. But I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't totally wrong.

Perhaps you bought a couple to stop your opponent from taking the whole pile? Though if this is the case, then you probably would have been better off going the fool's gold strategy yourself.

So, my gut feeling is, when you're greening up enough that your Fool's Golds are becoming harder to pair up in the same hand, or when it's endgame and you're unlikely to see another reshuffle, assuming trashing a Fool's Gold from this hand won't stop you from buying a Province this turn.

When you've got drawing cards in hand and a deck that's bigger than it used to be.

I'd say it depends on how you're playing FG.

FG/Mint-> never use it
FG+Envoy or FG/Nomad Camp -> You probably want to use it 90% of the time.

It really only hurts you becasue you lose the fools gold for that one turn. Remember that while FG+FG+NC=$7 G+G+NC=$8, and G+C+C+C+NC=$8 while FG+C+C+C+NC=$6

3x FG = 1 + 4 + 4 = $9
3x Gold = $9

In other words, if you have three or more FG in hand, you don't want to trash them. Otherwise, if you can't buy a province this turn, trashing them might let you buy one next hand.

Played this game a few days ago.  http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111215-224907-0c54dd80.html

My opponent buys the penultimate province putting him less than 6 points ahead. My hand is Fool's Goldx2, Watchtower, Copper, Province. By trashing the FG's, topdecking the gold I immediately draw them back with WT. So this basically netted me $1, and the rest of the WT draw gave me exactly what I needed to get the last province.

You forgot to reveal your Watchtower to make sure the Fool's Gold are gained to the top of your deck :B
