I don't see sports scoring as different from victory points. Yeah, futbol's victory points are very simple: 1 goal = 1 point. But yeah, basketball and American football do have different scoring conditions. Getting the ball in the basket gets you different points depending on the situation. That's not too much different from Stone Age where buying a building can yield you different points or from Dominion where buying a green card can yield you different points. But even though there are more complex scoring conditions, some games have a 1-for-1 mechanic just like futbol.

Right, but the original question specified "...is obtained in varying amounts for doing different things in the game", which definitely does not apply to soccer, hockey, etc.

Except in basketball, where you get 2 VP for a shot from a within a particular area, or 3 VP for a shot outside it. Or Australian Rules Football, where kicking the ball between the centre pair of goalposts is worth 6 VP, but kicking it outside those but within the other goalposts is worth 1 VP. Or cricket, where you get 1 VP per run, 4 VP for hitting the ball into the boundary of the field, 6 VP for hitting it over the boundary, 1 VP for the bowler on the opposing side making certain errors ... Really cricket is just a great big Feldian point salad.

Right, which is why I said

It's true that for certain sports the score is basically the same idea as victory points, as Watno pointed out earlier.

The point I'm trying to make (but apparently is not coming across) is that there are sports with no points, there are sports with points that only count one thing, and there are sports with points that count multiple things with different values. It's not as simple as saying that sports have victory points.

How about Scrabble as an early example of a board game with numerical victory points that are scored in different amounts for different accomplishments and can't be reconstructed from the state of the board at the end of the game?

Judo has victory points, but it also has an instant win (ippon).

Ippon or submissions.
