This is just a random idea I was thinking about, that I wanted to put up for discussion.  Consider the following variants:

Modified Thief $4 Action - Attack
Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck. If they revealed any Treasure cards, they may trash one of them that you choose. You may gain any or all of these trashed cards. They discard the other revealed cards.

Modified Pirate Ship $4 Action - Attack
Choose one: Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck, may trash a revealed Treasure that you choose, discards the rest, and if anyone trashed a Treasure you take a Coin token; or, +$1 per Coin token you’ve taken with Pirate Ships this game.

How much better would it make them?

The choice is for the attacker, not the attacked.

These have been suggested before for sure. Thing is it won't make them much stronger. The big downside is no immediate benefit.

Thief just has a weak effect. Treasure stealing with no benefit is just not that good.

For PS, it needs to trash copper to grow fast enough. Of course that's good for the opponent, but that's also needed for the card to work. This is why it's a weak card, the option won't change it enough. The best suggested fixes are to just make them like NB with $1 or something.

to get the desired effect, you'd have to word it like so:

"you may choose one of them. He trashes the chosen card and discards the rest. Gain..."
