How should we number our mafia games?

- 23 (46.9%)
With needlessly confusing Roman numerals (M-MMMXMX) (This is the stupid answer)

End Roman Numerals
« on: June 16, 2014, 11:08:17 am »

They looked cool at the beginning but at this point they are just difficult to read considering we often use M- to abbreviate mafia. Maybe this is a little thing but it's driving me crazy.

Also, some mods are using one and some are using the other.

I motion to standardize regular numbers from now on.

I haven't seen any mods use Arabic numerals in the thread title for normal games.

Mafias 45 and 31 both used Arabic numerals.

Throwing my support in for Arabic numerals, though the fact I'm running M45 with them is kind of a strong hint which way I lean anyway.

I support roman numerals.  I don't think it matters much, and they look cool.

I also support needlessly confusing roman numerals. They're fun, teach roman numerals, and don't hurt very much for being confusing.

They're fun: Debatable (literally, it's fun for some and not for others)
Teach roman numerals: Sure, but does that matter?
Don't hurt very much for being confusing: It hurts when people start trying to use it as shorthand instead of the name of the game itself, especially with typos.

I honestly don't even look at the roman numerals for a game. I read each and every one as something like "M:IIXIVIIVXXIXI". So when people refer to "M:25" I have no idea what they are talking about unless they call it "Chocolate Mafia" or the Arabic number is in the name.

So, yeah. I think they look cool, but I think for practical reasons we should switch to arabic numbers. RMM games do it, but I think that's because it's just a jumble of letters if they don't.

This is a good point. I had a great memory for the games by number until it got to the difficult to read, prone to error zone of Roman numerals.

Maybe from now on I should title the threads something like "MCXLIV (144)".

M |||| |||| |||| |||| |||| |||| |||| |||| |||| |||: Tally Mafia

It's a lot like regular Mafia, but players are encouraged to mark tallies on their WWII-era aircraft whenever they make a kill

It goes without saying that said aircraft should also be decorated with intimidating shark faces or paintings of your best gal

I think we should use a different cryptographic key to encrypt each mafia title, this encourages players to learn codebreaking while they play forum games!

As I said in te Homeland Mafia thread (which is always how I refer to games, not using numerals of any kind, just the name), I like roman numerals. I don't think they're particularly confusing, and they just look cool.

That said, I do think we should be consistent, so if this poll is won by the arabic option, we should just stick to arabic for all games.

I say use both! A nice middle ground that makes everyone happy! Example - MCLXVII/M168 - Pippi Longstocking and the Mafia

yay!

If I ever do another normal game, I've already decided to call it something like MLXXVI/M76/M4C/M1001100

The name should be in base B, where B is the number of the Mafia game mod 16 (+1).  Then the base being used should be indicated by roman numeral after the game number.

So Mafia 53 would be... Mafia 125_VI.

Can't imagine it being simpler than that.

I've switched to regular numbers.

I need to standardize the queue/record, but it's been moving to Arabic numerals for awhile now.

Plus, the subject line has a character limit, so it saves space.  Also, my signature.

Seems like Robz' idea would now be supported by one highly positioned Russian. Minister of culture was unable to read number of Moscow Film Festival during opening ceremony because it was spelled in Roman numerals
