By discarding cards from hand or putting them on top of your deck you can create situations where a poorer card gives a better result from saboteur type attacks, thief type attacks, swindlers, sages, rogues, lookouts, ironmongers, tributes, loans, doctors, jesters, trade routes, and so on.
