Is Baron worth it?

Code: [Select]
Haven, Pearl Diver, Fishing Village, Shanty Town, Baron, Bishop, Thief, Catacombs, Rabble, Hunting Grounds
http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20140502/log.516ddc20e4b082c74d7cbc04.1399072712544.txt

The plan was skip baron and trash hunting grounds late in the game for extra points. I think it was a shitty strategy and was poorly executed anyway. Sooo... definitely get the baron, right? And with the extra buy(s) buy more engine components and gold along the way?

Yeah you obviously want Baron once your deck is tamed. Getting Treasure at any point in the game is very bad: your 3s should go to Fishing Villages and Shanty Towns and your 6s to Hunting Grounds, which you intend to trash with Bishop in exchange for a Duchy, which in turn you can Bishop too, getting 7VP out of a 6 card! You want to keep your hands off the Provinces unless game conditions force you to get some.

Cool I like that plan. How do you end the game? Three pile duchies, FVs, and hunting grounds?

You will want Golds in this game, no question about it. Lot's of expensive draw pieces and you want to be able to add 3 or so pieces a turn once your draw is up. Goldless player will fall behind in deck development and have less flexibility in the end. Drawing this deck is a piece of cake anyway, the Golds aren't going to screw up consistency.

To add 3 pieces you need 2 Barons anyway and those give you $8 already, so that between 4-5 Fishing Villages, 1-2 Bishops and a left-over Copper or two you don't need the Golds. It isn't that you wouldn't want them in your deck, it's the opportunity cost of not getting a Hunting Grounds instead.

On top of that, if you get more than one and certainly if you get more than two, I'd be quite happy to play the Thief I gain off a Bishopped Catacombs a few times before my good Catholic friend, conforming to custom, grants him absolution and a place in heaven.

I would love for you to gain a Thief and go Hunting for 1-2 Golds amongst a deck of actions and Coppers, I really would. I wouldn't get more than 2, unless I've Bishoped one away. But the Coppers will disappear eventually, and I want Gold to be keep my economy up near $18 a turn. It's not unreasonable to push for $24 and a triple Province either, though this is less likely.
