While surfing around YouTube, I found this great strategy video that covers newbie mistakes. I suggest you show it to new players, it's really good.

No, this is not a good video to show to beginners.

I just skipped ahead and managed to land straight on a gold mine, at around 3:47 or so.

"What's the worst card in the game? ... the answer is Chapel."

Cue laugh track.

...

I guess they forgot to insert the laugh track?

Edit: After watching some more, I really can't even tell if this is serious or not. Like... I haven't watched it all. I don't think I want to watch it all. But I haven't seen any obvious attempts at humour, so I guess Poe's law applies?

Edit 2: Okay, so having watched actually a fair bit more, this must be sarcasm. I still haven't watched it all. Please let it be sarcasm.

Edit 3: Having decided to watch the whole thing, actually, that wasn't bad at all. Definitely got more obvious (and funny) when I didn't randomly pick a dumb place to start :P.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

When you read you begin with A B C
When you watch videos you begin with 0:00.

I dunno, I actually quite enjoy the random place I did start. Also there's what's his name's observation that you can usually skip the first 30% of a Youtube video and not miss anything of importance.

He probably mentioned his name in the first 30% of the video.

Anyone paying attention will see that the Village player is spinning wheels while the other guy is the one buying Provinces.  This video won't make anyone play worse than they already were, and may actually help players realize that the string of Villages does nothing on its own.  Certainly there are some players who don't realize it's a joke, but they were already terrible players to begin with.  And some of those who seem to be clueless are probably themselves joking or trolling.

Not everything needs to be clarified as a joke or not.  Have you ever read Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal?

It's been a while since I watched this but I remember just not finding it funny at all. The thing about satire is that, since it doesn't have a punchline, the delivery needs to be good to make it either funny or impactful; the delivery of this is not good.

I don't know, it weren't just some, it really was roughly half of the comments. If you don't realise that playing a village doesn't do anything by itself, you may also try to apply some of the stuff from the video. I do think it will make some people realize that villages don't do anything, but these people would also realise that if the joke was explained at the end.

And no, I haven't

AdamH's video is even more hilarious since it at least doesn't seem tongue-in-cheek. I've definitely done stuff like that. Hamlet is great because it can make good players seem like complete noobs.

Incidentally, some of my favorite videos are of me just getting pwned and looking like a complete idiot.

"Half" is "some"!  And probably half of that half are trolls!  You spend your time here at f.ds so you don't see it as much, but many players truly are terrible.  Just take a spin by BGG's Dominion forums... Or heck, let's bring back an old favourite link.  Check out this article.  Also, contrary to what we've learned here at f.ds, explaining the joke doesn't always make the joke funnier.

You should read A Modest Proposal if you have some time.  It's pretty great.  It's a satirical piece of writing that suggests poor Irish folk should sell their children as food for rich people.  He lists a bunch of reasons why it would be advantageous, he even gives a few recipes, and he does it all in a very serious manner.  If you read between the lines, it's basically a giant middle finger to what we now refer to as the 1%.  Of course, lots of people can't read between the lines and were very offended at this proposal. :P

I played someone who pile drove the Hamlets and then I didn't have enough to run an engine while he did. They were also the only source of +actions.
