Goko Ace of Spades
« on: April 24, 2014, 05:25:48 pm »

My first Mystic revealed a Necropolis, so I click "Show All Cards" to be able to fish it out with the second Mystic.

And I see this.

I swear I didn't photoshop that... and searching this forum for 'spades' gives at least two references:

http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=6380.msg257917#msg257917

http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5747.msg148031#msg148031

Is this an in-joke / easter egg?

It's a feature they added on 4/17 to simplify the Show All Cards interface.  Looks silly, but it's technically a good idea.

Why didn't they just use Scout, as that would never be in anyone's deck? </hides>

Well I don't quite get the need or point of this 'simplification', but okay... adds some amusement I suppose.

Picking the Ace of Spades guarantees a miss. Much better than listing all Dominion cards.

Doesn't seem a necessary guarantee, I guess I'm saying.  I mean how often can you not name one of 18+ cards in the game and know for sure it won't match?  Virtually never really.

Edge case: Fairgrounds game.  Sure, it's unlikely to happen, but it can, so someone will care when it does.

Swindler.

I really wish they'd use a more fitting image though.

It would probably be better if they used a blank Dominion card template, and then mention in the text box that you can pick this card if you want to guarantee a miss, just so it doesn't look weird.

It is inside joke: If I remember correctly Donald used Ace of Spades in an answer in some rules question I can't find a reference to. The question was if you need to name a valid Dominion card to Wishing Well or something like that and he answered, that you can name Ace of Spades.

To precisely simulate the physical game, they should let you type in whatever name you want. But in practice just providing one alien option is sufficient. For sure it's better to provide one than not.

That's a pretty loose definition of "precisely" of all words. They should start working on voice recognition. And possibly some holographic video and some body tracking. Shuffling with your wii remote would be fun. Being able to cheat by topdecking cards while shuffling would be even more fun.

I recently showed the Ace of Spades to a friend who is fairly new to Dominion (I introduced him IRL and we've since played online when we've had some free time) and he found it hilarious. I explained why it was there and he seemed to agree it was a good solution. So overall I actually think this was a really nice solution to what was currently a slightly messy interface.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

Someone with better Photoshop Skillz than me needs to put together an "Ace of Spades" Dominion card, because that up there is a bit unsightly.

Uh? Really don't have anything to say to someone who thinks being disconnected or not having the interface respond to input is intentional.  Happens to me all the time.

Though it has been becoming somewhat more stable the past 1-2 months so at least that's good

I really would like for them to go the extra mile and let me type in something.  I want to wish for Blue Eyes White Dragon off my Wishing Well.

Ace of Spades
$0* - Technicality

When you must name a card, you may name this instead of a Dominion card.

(This is not in the Supply.)

Yeah, I really think a simple "click here to name a non-existent card" button would work so much better. The Ace looks very strange next to the other cards, and I'm sure many people will be confused as the OP was, especially those who aren't Dominion fanatics to the point where they realize that naming a card that's not in your deck is a thing you might do.

I love the inclusion of the Ace of Spades, and I'm proud of MF for implementing it. There, I said it!

The trash card is technically a Dominion card, but also a card that will never appear in someone's deck.  It even has official art.

Also the Knights randomizer, though it may be even more confusing.

Maybe MF could commission one of the original dominion artist to whip up an image that'd fit the rest of the art...

How did MF get the Ace of Spades they are using? It looks proprietary (if that's the right word).  The Ace of Spades is a public domain concept but particular artistic representations of it are not.

Google Images doesn't find another version of that picture. That doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be MF's original of course, but it does suggest that it actually could be.
