The Stormlight Archive

Anyone read it?  The first book came out a few years ago, called The Way of Kings.  It's by Brandon Sanderson, the guy that finished up the Wheel of Time series.   The second novel, Words of Radiance, came out recently.  I just started reading it, so I'm still at the very beginning.

I like Sanderson.. I thought Mistborn (at least the first three, didn't read the latest one(s) yet) was good, as well as his stand-alone novels.  Actually his stand-alone novels were probably best.  I don't think his writing is as engaging as Jordan's, but most people didn't really like Jordan's writing, so maybe people might like this better.  Anyway, Stormlight Archive is more of an epic fantasy series, with at least five books planned.  I'm guessing he won't let it get so.. expansive as Wheel of Time.

Hmm, does stuff actually happen in the first few books?

I'm not a massive fan of such long planned series, I like books that are stories in themselves without hanging to wait for the next 3 books...

I am so pumped for book two!  The only unfortunate thing is that I'm currently 18th on the wait list at my public library.  :/

I'm actually currently reading Jordan's Wheel of Time series as I wait to get to book two of the stormlight archive.

You all should go find the Riyria Revelations and all associated novels.  Great, great stuff by a really nice guy in Fairfax, Virginia who self-published, got a fan base, then got picked up by a house.

He's super engaging on Goodreads, and the books are great old-school fantasy.

Thanks WW, I'll keep it in mind. Like Shark Bait I'm in the middle of the WOT series and I have a ton of books that i I want to get to but I'll get to Sanderson eventually. Me and used book stores have an intense relationship, as Ozle can attest to.

Yeah, same here (not 18th, but I'm still going to have to wait a while). Although I am thinking about just buying it off of Amazon.
Sanderson is an incredible author, and also does the podcast Writing Excuses, which is amazing just in itself.

The Mistborn Trilogy was outstandingly awesome, but unfortunately the standalone novel wasn't that great. It is set in the future and introduces some interesting mechanics between allomancy and guns(which had a ton of potential), but overall falls flat imo

Well Wikipedia lists it as Fall 2015, so we'll see.  But I don't see any indication on his website on how far he is with it.

Though, apparently you can read Warbreaker for free:

http://brandonsanderson.com/warbreaker-introduction/

At least that's what it seems like, I didn't click through all the links.  Warbreaker was very good.  A similar idea to Elantris, but approached from a different angle.

I just got it from the library today! I think I'm gonna try to space out reading it as opposed to what I usually do, which is binge for 6+ hours.
I love long books so much--although they are still over too quickly.

I finished the newer Mistborn novel (The Allow of Law).  Very quick read, I think it took me a few days with commutes and nights.  I thought it was pretty good.. I don't know why people have reported bland reviews of it.  Maybe because it doesn't stand up to the Mistborn Trilogy, but it's only one book.  Apparently there will be a whole trilogy with Wax and Wayne, so I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah. I mean I enjoyed it. And I did think some of the new mechanics were interesting. Wayne was funny.
For me, it would have to be that it didn't measure up to the trilogy in my mind. Although part of this could just be that the standalone just has a very different feeling due to changes in culture over such a long period in time.

Oh, a trilogy with Wax and Wayne should be interesting. I remember reading in the back of the last Mistborn I think that he was planning to do a trilogy set in each time period: ancient, industrial, and futuristic.
Sanderson is kind of a beast of productivity I think. He's got a lot of different projects and manages to not only move them all forward, but also ensure that they're all high quality as well. I mentioned it before I think, but he and a few other authors have this awesome podcast called Writing Excuses. As an aspiring writer, it's been really helpful. There's a lot of real discussion and joking around that goes on, so it definitely places far above most other podcasts I've listened to.
