Mafia XLII: X-Men and X-Shots

Mods: yuma, ADK

This is an invented closed setup called: X-Shots for 13 players that deals specifically with X-Shots. I think it could potentially be run as an open setup but I want to run it as closed first. Balance has been sought, but is not completely guaranteed as this is a setup that has not been run before, but has been (I hope) well thought on and simulated a number of times.

Players may sign up to the seventh open spot now. Spots after that will not be given out at all until Faust's Philosophers Game has entered Night0.

f.ds Mafia Ruleset

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun! Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game.

Please read The Civility Pledge before signing up for this game. If you have not /pledged there, you cannot play here.

Excessive personal attacks or uncivil behavior may be dealt with by modifiers or modkills.


General Gameplay and Etiquette:

1. You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind. Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable, check with the mod if you need clarifications.
2. Personal communication outside of the forum postings is NOT ALLOWED unless your Role PM specifically allows it.
3. If you have a role with a Night action, your choices are due to all mods by the posted deadline (generally 48 hours from Night start during the first few Nights; later Nights may have shorter deadlines). If we do not receive your choice via PM by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions. In case of multiple submissions, the last valid one before the deadline will be used. Generally, one team member may submit the Night Actions for all team members. See rule 7 under miscellaneous below if you anticipate being VLA while having a PR.
4. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage), unless your Role PM specifically allows it.
5. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mods know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase, unless your Action is compulsory.
6. As a general rule you should aim for more than one post every 24 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving. Please treat this game as a commitment. If you can't commit to this game because of outside activities/responsibilities, other forum games or other contributing factors please /out before the start of the game.


Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:

1. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate. Further votes will also be ignored.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName. Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
5. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
6. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
7. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post in the game or in Quicktopics, except for twilight. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent, but will be invited to the Spectator Quicktopic.
8. Do not edit or delete posts. We don't want some players having more information than others. If you want to clarify posts, feel free to double post.

9. This game will have 10 day deadlines and 2 days nights. Because this game may run into two major American Holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) 2 days will be added to deadlines if those holidays occur during a day. If those holidays occur during a night, the night will be extended 2 days.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

1. Bold, blue text is reserved for the Mod. No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM the Mods privately. Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mods may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game. In the event of an incorrect vote count the mod has the right to revert the game state back to the state before the erroneous vote count. This means that any votes cast in the meantime will become void. Any time that was lost during this even will be added back onto for deadlines. Please note that if a mistake is not caught before a flip, the erroneous vote count will become binding.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mods so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 24 hours of no activity (VLA posts in the official VLA thread negate automatic prods). A prodded player has 24 hours to respond or risks replacement. A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to replacement without further notice.
6. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill, or beyond.
7. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
If you have a Power Role and go on VLA for longer than 2 days (the time period of a Night) please submit a temporary Night Action before leaving on VLA. This will be a placeholder action in the event that you will be absent during the night. Failure to submit an action before leaving will result in a "no action" that night.
8. Players who discover they are too busy to play in a game or want to leave the game for civility issues are not allowed to officially /out in the thread. A request to /out must only be done via a PM to the moderator. Please do not use this as a manipulation technique. (Note players may continue to threaten to /out or imply that they might as long as it does not include an official request). Requests to /out are final once submitted. There will be no /outing and then /inning back into the game so make sure that when you /out you have thought it through and really want to do it. Players that can't be replaced will simply be mod-killed.

Welcome to X-SHOTS. A closed 13-player setup created by yuma. In X-SHOTS both town and non-town will be given an X amount of PRs with an X amount of shots. Shots will be cumulative for the entire faction to use. Town will not be informed at any time of how many shots they start with as a whole, how many shots remain or if a specific shot was successful unless it yields a PM-able result. Town PRs will be informed of how many shots they bring into the game for the whole of town to use. Mafia will also be informed of how many shots they bring into the game for the whole of mafia to use.
 
All PRs require some sort of night action. This means there cannot be Masons or ICs or other PRs that cannot be X-shots. All of the PRs and modifiers in this game are considered normal and standard. There are no variants or modifications. All of the PRs will be randomly selected from a list that will not be made public. Theoretically each PR has an unlimited amount of shots up to the total given to the faction as long as no other player has or uses shots. The amount of shots for town can vary from 6 to 16 depending on which shots are randomly selected by the moderator. It is possible to have two (but no more than two) roles of the same type of the same alignment. All players without PRs will become Vanilla Townies or Mafia Goons.
 
Mafia will be three members. Mafia will start with 4 X-shots. Four of these shots come from a universal mafia JOAT comprised of: Godfather, Bulletproof, Ninja and Strongman (the later two modifiers apply to all Mafia actions not just the NK). These modifiers all correspond to town PRs that have potential, but are not guaranteed, to be in the game. On any night the mafia team may select any one mafia player to receive one of these four JOAT attributes using one of their X-shots. The JOAT attributes will only overcome one corresponding town role per night. The same modifier type may be used more than once, but not in the same night. Gaining an attribute from the universal JOAT does not count as an action. In addition, mafia will receive 1 mafia X-shot as well as 1 more for every 2 X-shots town receives above the baseline of 6, rounded down. The number of PRs mafia receives will also be correlated to the number of shots town receives. There may or may not be a SK, which would receive powers and X-shots correlating to mafia and town shots. Please note that mafia NKs alone do not count as shots.
 
Example setup:
The below is an example setup to help everyone understand how PRs and shots are given out. Please note that this is not the setup I am using, nor necessarily the roles or amounts of shots or exactly how mafia PRs and roles interact. This is simply a demo of what a theoretical game might look like. As such, please do not use this example to hypothesize about what roles I may or may not include, how many roles are going to be given out and what roles are deserving of more or less shots. The demo may or may not be balanced. I didn’t intend for it to be so, it is just an example of what a game might look like.

Possible roles (amount of shots in parenthesis): Follower (3 shots), JK (3 shots), Healer (4 shots), Neighborizer (3 shots), DayVig (2 shots), Bodyguard (4 shots), Goon Cop (4 shots), Commuter (2 shots)

The following roles are rolled: Healer (4), Commuter (2), Bodyguard (4), Neighborizer (3 shots) = 13 shots to be used by the town. As a result mafia receives 3 shots and a Rolecop PR in addition to the roles already assigned to mafia which were Roleblocker and the universal JOAT.

Result: Healer, Commuter, Bodyguard, Neighborizer (13 shots) vs Goon, Roleblocker, Rolecop and Universal JOAT (7 shots)
 
Flavor: Flavor will be X-Men themed. Flavor DOES NOT indicate alignment in anyway. Characters who are stereotypically bad may be town aligned and characters who are stereotypically good may be non-town aligned. One and only one role in the entire game will given flavor that is specifically designed to fit. All others will be established randomly from a pre-determined list. Scum will be given fake claims.

Night Action Resolution: (borrowed from mafiascum. Not all of the types are necessarily in the game.)

Notes:
- PM results to investigations of “No result” can mean many different things including: the investigation was blocked, the number of shots is used up, the player you are targeting “did nothing” or was “targeted by no one” etc…
- Roles of the same type will occur simultaneously.
- If the game progresses to a point where at night more actions are being performed than shots available the night action resolution will prioritize which actions are used and which are not.
- If a shot is blocked for some reason it is still effectively considered to be “used up.”
- No role may target itself.
- If a PR of either alignment dies the dying player takes half, rounded up, of the shots they brought with them into the game, regardless of whether or not they used any shots themselves or how many shots are currently available. As an example, if the JK brought 3 shots into the game and he dies Night3 then town would lose 2 shots from their total available, regardless of how many shots the JK has performed on that night or previous nights. Shots lost at night are resolved after all other night actions.
- Players of both alignments will not be informed if their night action was successful or not except in the case of investigations getting results back.
- An individual mafia can’t perform an action and night kill the same night unless only 1 mafia player is alive.
- Universal JOAT shots only aid mafia against one town role per night.
- Mafia PRs will be given X-shot claims to mimic that which town would expect to receive.
- PRs will not flip the number of shots they brought into the game upon death
- PRs of the same type and same alignment may not necessarily bring in the same amount of shots

Hmm, yeah. I'm kind of taking a break from Mafia at the moment, I would have signed up for Star Wars otherwise. I'll see how I'm going when this is closer to opening.

Sure let's go with that! It was actually more my inability/lack of enthusiasm to be involved in the early-mid parts of Mario.

I would think probably yes.

It is a smaller setup (only 9 players) with 7 day deadlines. So it is likely to move relatively fast.

Hey Welcome back!

This game may not start for a while. If you are interested in playing one sooner check either of these three games:

A role madness game
a Newbie game you would qualify having only played one game thus far
a fun game where you get to draft your role

I think the first two need just one more player to get started!

Either way your spot is secure in this game, but I thought I would promote games that will open before mine to get mine started sooner!

I would join the RMM game. That one looks like it's going to be amazing.

I was considering it. But I wanted to give Ash a chance since it sounded like he was interested.

Both only have 1 spot open, but I'm pretty sure RMM was open for sign-ups since the last game I played.

What's the timeline on that looking like? Because I do want to stick with one game at a time at least until this semester is over.

It seems like this game might not start for a while. Also, given that I've only played 1 game--I don't have the best handle on pacing. I feel like Dynasty Warriors II was pretty slow in that we were up to the deadline almost every day. So is there a good chance that RMM will finish, or be close to completion by the time X-Men starts?

If so, then I think I will join it.

That one will probably take a bit longer to end. It is the same size as DWII with 13 players and 10 day deadlines, so will take about the same length I would guess. I would imagine this game would start before it ends but I couldn't guarantee it (although I would hope that it does). So as much as I want the RMM game to start I would suggest you play the newbie game if your ultimate goal is to find one that will end before this one starts...

I think I will join the newbie game then, as I really can't do 2 games at this time.
Also, having not played in a little while, it will be nice to get back into the swing of things with something a little simpler.
