Your nicknames for Dominion cards
« on: November 28, 2011, 03:04:02 pm »

When I play live Dominion with my friends, we come up with all kinds of goofy nicknames for the cards, and I'm curious to see if anyone else has any. Here are some of the ones we use.

The earliest one we had that I remember was for Wharf. Whenever my friend would play it he would say "wharf to the bridge." I thought that was awesome and that's how I got my isotropic username.

Smugglers is always "snugglers."

Spy is always pronounced "spee."

Pearl diver is affectionately referred to as "muff diver."

When Cornucopia first came out, I got Horse Traders and Hunting Party confused, so I kept calling Horse Traders "Horse Party." Eventually that name stuck and so now we just always call it Horse Party.

One I thought of recently that I really like is calling Menagerie "Nicki Menagerie." I'm thinking of changing my username to this. It's the kind of username that would make me laugh every time I see it, like "BarneyRabble" or "occupy grand market."

Over the weekend my friends and I got to play with Hinterlands for the first time, and got to start renaming those cards. Highway is played by saying "Life is a highway," in reference to the Tom Cochrane song, Spice Merchant is now "Spice Girls," and Crossroads is usually announced by saying "See you at the crossroads," in reference to the Bone Thugz n Harmony song.

Does anyone else have any goofy nicknames like these?

I think everyone, at one point or another, has come up with the same nickname for Witch.

My nickname for Tactician is Slaking, after the pokemon.

I don't think we change the names at all (except for shortening to things like "Lab" or "Mining"), but whenever we play Torturer, it's said in an ominous/foreboding voice of doom.  "Rabble" is spoken like the Hamburglar said it.

I tend to pronounce Duchy as "ducky", like a rubber ducky.

And of course Young Witch is sung like the beginning of "YMCA".  I'm pretty sure everyone's done that, though.

I've never really used nicknames, but I do tend to say "Goons. Hired Goons."

Also, not really a nickname and probably kinda obscure, but Moneylender always makes me think of this:

Sadly I have never done any of the things that "everyone has probably done". Apparently I need a play group that's more fun.

However, I always thought "WHARF 2 THA BRIDGE" was really clever (although every time I saw it, I couldn't help thinking, "...you're gonna need a Village or two to pull that off...").

Also, "Occupy Grand Market" is outstanding. I might just change my isotropic username to that once the tournament is over.

This reminds me, we usually call Young Witch "Young Money." I guess a lot of our references are from pop music.

It's a name that's already in use.

For the record, WHARF 2 THA BRIDGE has long been one of my favorite names.

Torturer is referred to as "Timmy the Torturer" or just Timmy by my circles (but not as in the South Park gag).

Any attack card that's a bloke tends to get referred to as "Knob-head" or "fuck-face", or even ruder versions (especially for Saboteur and Swindler).

Market = Le Marche (as in the french)

Counting House = Counting Haus (just said in a really camp german accent for some reason, god knows why)

Moat = Moaty!! (a la Gazza)

My crew has some good ones. Or, well, we think they're good. Everybody thinks their own jokes are funny.

Envoy is "Kevin Nealon" due to the picture's vague resemblance.

The Duke is "Bob Ross" because, well, I mean look at him… it's like he's gesturing to a painting he just made.

Goons is "Going to Goontown."

Mountebank is "Maaaabaaaaaa" spoken in an outrageous French accent.

Rabble is "Rabblerabblerabble" from South Park.

Harem is just "my ladies."

You have to pronounce the "ch" in Alchemist.

Nobles is "Shnobles" inexplicably. Not sure why.

I'm not sure why, but we say a lot of the base cards as if they're Spanish words. So, Village is "vee-yah-ge", festival is "festeebal", etc. I'm really not sure how this started, since none of us speak Spanish fluently. Also, you have to pronounce Laboratory like "La-boor-a-tory". There's one member of our group who always sings "Pass the Dutchie" whenever someone buys a Duchy, and says "It's a MINE" whenever someone plays a Mine. I think that's from Lord of the Rings, but I'm not sure.

My brother and I do a bit of "And they call it a mine! A MINE!" which is from LotR. I don't really have anything else to add other than I often call Smithy and Thief Smiffy and Fief.

One that my group always does is refer to Provinces as "Asia" (due to Asia being worth the most in Risk).  Whenever the first province in a game is bought, we almost always say "E's got Asia!  Get im!" (due to the piling on that happens when someone conquers Asia in Risk.  Though it's much harder to pile on in Dominion).  The few times we've played with Colonies, they're "Super-asia"

While my group does none of these, I can see us picking up quite a few, namely the hip-hop references and spanish pronunciation. I might have to change my username to reflect the cleverness displayed in this thread.
Any time Dominion gets a Bone Thugz reference, I just love the game all the more.

Yes! That's it, thank you. I should really reread/watch those some time.

We emphasize the "H" in Wharf (think of the family guy cool whip / wil wheaton segment)

Isotropic became Isotropicanna (yes, like Tropicana, the orange juice), which led to isotropicanna extravaganzas... and later just... "canna".  "Can canna?" "Can/Cannot" is the common invite/response.

Caravan became "Caravanna extravaganza"

Goons is pronounced "Gooooooooons-aah"

Witch provokes Monty Python quotes

Mine provokes Finding Nemo quotes

Rabble is "rabble rabble rabble" (always 3x, always like in south park. Also, being excessively attacked makes us sad pandas.)

There are probably more (/moar) - but as someone mentioned - they're less funny when not amongst friends.

That said, if we could make "Matt Dawson is getting impatient" a meme, it would make my day. And my month. And my year.

When my friend bought his first Baron, he said "a four for a Barn!" Therefore, Baron is Barn.

there are certain sound changes; in particular, sh ---> sk for "fisking village, wisking well," "biskop," and the less obvious "miliska." also "sliver" for silver, "framing village," some other metathesis.

Just played with my bro, and every time a Shanty Town was bought or played he sang "Won't you take me to... Shanty Town!" Cracked me up.

Shanty town is "The Slanty Shanty!" (From the Simpsons: “Behold, the horrors of the Slanty Shanty! See the twisted creatures that dwell within! Meet Cue Ball, the man with no hair!” )
Goons is "Gooooons" said ominously.
Village is pronounced "Willage".
Steward is "Stewart" (but that one's obvious).

When revealing Moat, I personalize my reaction as in "witches can't swim".
After skipping my current turn with Tactician, I put one hand on my chin, one on the table (ala Tactician picture) and announce "...and I wait.".

My personal favourite is Lookout, exclaimed as "Look out!" (gets them every time  8))

I always pronounce Duchy as "Dooky."  Which makes sense to me, because a Duchy is run by a Duke, so it should sound the same.  But of course, "Dookie" is juvenile slang for a unit of defecation, and the people I play with will give me varying amounts of flak for pronouncing it that way.  I just can't say "Dutchie."  We're not in Holland.
