Day 2 - Marietta, GA

One of the reasons I am excited to be back down south is... wait for it.... Waffle House! No Waffle House today but we did get to a Huddle House, which is pretty much Omelet House, which is pretty much Waffle House. On our way out we decided to stop by Carl Sandburg's house. Here's a shitty photo of it:



But more important than the house were the GOATS!



after some driving and experiencing the backwoods of South Carolina, we reach Marietta. Marietta is a suburb of Atlanta and there's not much else to say about it besides their street signs are illuminated. WHAT!?

The show was at Darwin's Burgers & Blues. It's a small, dark juke joint with nice music loving people and good food.  Here it is:



The show was great and.... that's about it. I'm in the hotel right now watching Dragonball Z (Cell's power grows every second!) and I gotta eat and get out of here momentarily. Tallahassee next!

Day 3 - Bradfordville, FL

We're finally in Florida just outside Tallahassee.  Bradfordsville Blues Club is a juke joint in the middle of the woods, pretty much. It's next to what used to be a baseball diamond where negro-leaguers played, if I understood correctly. This place is the real deal. Here's what it looks like:

A band house was provided and it actually wasn't a shithole for a change. We spent the night watching a VHS of Bull Durham and passed out.

Day 4 - Off Day

We went into Tallahassee, had a ridiculous Cuban sandwich from a food truck, went to a book store and record store, and... pretty much did nothing else. I tried a Newcastle Cabbie Black Ale and was impressed.

Day 4 - Sarasota, FL

I'm sick and my phone is being a little bitch so no photos from this day. We played at The Blue Rooster, a more modern bar compared to where we've played so far. Good show but I was pretty worn out and just wanted to drink tea and get to sleep.

Day 5 - Off Day

Holy shit... ok. Let me try to explain this day. My roommate/the sax player John and I are big baseball fans and thought it'd be cool to see a Spring Training game while we're down here. We were going to see the Yankees but found out Sarasota is home to the Orioles, and being from Maryland, I was more than happy to see a team I like (I'm more of a Nats fan). Anyway, we get to the stadium and get our seats and I decide to get some peanuts. I walk out to the concessions and see a huge line. I look around and see some books for sale. Cal Ripken Jr.'s book. And he'll be here in an hour signing his new book. Now this might not sound like a huge deal but if you are from Maryland and you were born in the late '80s, Cal Ripkin Jr. is a god. He was my hero as a kid and I wasn't about to miss a chance to at least get an autograph. I run back to my seat to tell John, we quickly decide that we don't give a shit about the game and we buy books and get in line. About two hours later, this happened:



I also got a picture with him but I don't think I'll post it. I like having people guess what I look like. Some people might think I'm an Eskimo and I don't want to ruin anything for them.

Anyway, pretty sweet right? We then walked to a book store, ate some Mexican food and continued being awesome. Wow. Here's a photo of the Sarasota shore:

We played outside the city in Marietta at Darwin's Burgers and Blues. You can see the full post at the top of the page. Do you live there or are you just visiting? I've been there a couple times before and know a little bit (really just a little) about Atlanta.

I'm not so familiar with Marietta, but it seems that you'll be in Atlanta in May?  I've been there 5 years, so I know a few places around and such.  I'm not so into the music scene, but I could ask a fellow music-oriented grad student if he knows of any must-see music things or whatnot.  Basically, all my city-knowledge involves food.

Ok cool. Most of my experience with cities is the immediate area surrounding the club I'm playing at. In Atlanta I've played at a place in Little Five Points called The Star Community Bar and a big club called The Masquerade which I know nothing about. I've seen a little bit of the downtown but really that's the extent of my knowledge. I'll let you know when I'm coming through in May!

Little 5 is awesome. if I remember correctly, Masquerade is not in a very cool place.

The Tabernacle is a pretty sweet music spot. I don't know of any Halls of Fame or anything like that. Little 5 Points is probably the best part of all of Atlanta. Satellite Records is there as is the Flying Biscuit. DO NOT visit Underground Atlanta.

No, I spent about 6 months on a project in Hampton and then 16 months on a project in Fort Benning and my  SIL lived there and I went to many raves there, oh and my brother lived there so I have spent a great deal of time in Atlanta and know my way around it pretty well. On the project stints it was where I went to do anything fun although Columbus was kind of fun without the drive and traffic. Speaking of music places the Earl is a great hole in the wall place to catch a show.

Day 6 - Dunedin, FL

So we pulled into the shithole hotel we were staying in that night and noticed the business next door. It was aptly called "The G-Spot" and was pretty much a shack. I like strip clubs as much as... well I'm not crazy about them. But I wasn't about to touch that parking lot with a stick. The hotel was awful. One of the worst I've ever stayed in. The whole joint smelled like an ashtray, there were holes, cigarette burns, weird stains, and rust everywhere, and we weren't looking forward to going to sleep. My roommate and I decided we needed to get the hell out so we found an overpriced mini-golf place and I proceeded to demonstrate my dominance in the sport. They had some gators right in front which was pretty cool.





Anyway, we played at The Dunedin Brewery. I played here two years ago and was so hungover I didn't want to touch alcohol ever again. Yeah, it was one of those hangovers. I've waited two years to drink the beer at this brewery and here I am again, sick, and not wanting to touch alcohol at all. Anyway, even without alcohol the show went well and people were digging it. There was even a dude from a radio show in Nova Scotia that wanted us to record a couple promos. So here's what the place looks like:

After the show we got back to the hotel and I reluctantly put my head on the lumpy ass pillow and somehow fell asleep.
