The Cinnabar Mansion is giving them terrific amounts of grief. Failed attempts to get through so far have included: Being trapped in a dead end with no items/pokemon giving a means to escape, reaching the Secret Key on the same step Pigeot fainted, and just failing to make sufficient progress.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

They're on the Elite Four, after cheating their way through Victory Road. Completely failed to go get the TMs they were planning to get, but did manage to overwrite Whirlwind with Sky Attack on God Bird. Loreli looks set to wipe out the team. Maybe now people will regret not getting those relevant moves.

Hm, does the rock that you have to push down a hole reset if you leave Victory Road? If not, going back to grind and get TMs seems like a good plan still. And even if it does, now they've visited Indigo Plateau, they can fly back there relatively easily (open fly, press down, a).

ATV vs. Dragonite is my new favorite moment of this whole thing.

ATV just beat Dragonite, because Dragonite keeps using moves of types which are super effective against Poison types. Like, Barrier and Agility.

So some of you probably play Civ.

There is currently a "Helix Fossil Religion" pack available as a mod for Civ 5.

For people who haven't been keeping track, now they're playing Pokemon Crystal. They've gotten all Johto badges and Kanto badges, and just have to beat Red.

Except Red's team has been hacked to be the same team from the Gen 1 savefile. So far lvl 81 Zapdos has killed everything.

I haven't been following the Crystal playthrough as closely as I did the original. Whenever I checked in, the player counts suggested the same thing.  Possibly it's because the novelty wore off.  Possibly it's the new Democracy system.  In the new one, Democracy turns on a set schedule (every hour, I think?) and then turns on if "anarchy" wins the "next command" vote.  Theoretically alright, but there were portions of gameplay where they stayed on democracy for over an hour.

Actually, I think the problem is that there was no real hook in this playthrough.  The original one had the Helix Fossil and all its mythos, not to mention the hilarious story of the ledge war that came up pretty early.  AFAIK, there was no particular challenge in Crystal that stalled the stream for even a few hours, let alone for more than a full day.

Yeah, it jumped the shark for me as soon as Democracy was added. I kept up with it to see how the story ended, but now that the first game is over I don't really care about it anymore.

Yeah, I didn't like the new Democracy system either. The story for Gen 2 was also not that great early on, although it got better. The quick summary is that a couple days in, people tried to deliberately release Feraligatr because it was destroying all the gyms, and people thought that wasn't "fun" anymore. They failed, but ended up releasing a Togepi (Prince Omelette) and a Woope (Wooper Goldberg) instead.

So at that point, the fanon explanation is that the mob was being controlled by Lord Helix who was evil all along, and the goal of the journey was to defeat the gods of old by beating Red in Mt. Silver. Basically, out go all the religious overtones, and the new motto is "No gods, no kings, only mon", with the party struggling to distance themselves from these heroic figures from Gen 1 that overshadow them.

Anyways, I didn't follow it that much either, the longest they got stuck for was on Elite 4 but they actually had a fairly balanced party. IMO the only good moments were Togepi trolling with Metronome (RIP Prince Omelette ;_;), using a Master Ball on a Goldeen, and the final challenge set by the streamer after they lost to Red for the first time. (Democracy disabled, 7 days to defeat Red, if Red is not defeated the stream dies, if Red is defeated the stream will play Emerald next.)
