Good Forum Game Candidates?
« on: February 21, 2014, 06:44:33 am »

I enjoy forum games a lot, they give me the chance to do some actual boardgaming without being constrained to a certain time and place.

Which popular games out there would make for a good forum game?

Ideally the game would be structured in a way where players can take a complete turn and wait for their turn to come around, otherwise too much time is spent waiting. Not that games like that won't work, I just think they ask too much activity from the players involved. Coops tend to do well as a forum game, because if some player is unable or unwilling to do a lot of work, others can easily fill that gap.

How about Nations? Would it be too interactive? I'm curious about this game.

I don't think coops work particularily well as PBF, because you need to need to check with everyone before every move.

Nations doesn't require any other players to act during your turn i think, but there are very many short turns, so it might not be ideal.

I'd be interested in Nations, though I've not played it before.  I'm thinking of starting up a Puerto Rico game sometime soon...

I'm (sort of not really because nothing is happening and we've had 5 million replacements) already modding one.

Yeah, I know.  I was kinda hoping to get in on the start of a new one.  Nice thing about Puerto Rico is the mod can participate thanks to forum dice rolling.

Oh... well I'd happily do that too if you're in need!  Don't we have a replacements thread?  We totally need one.

Would anyone be interested in playing The Doomed Pilgrim with me?

It's a role-playing game specifically designed for forum play; I would play the pilgrim, and, well, everyone else would try to keep me from reaching my destination. There's rules and stuff.

As mentioned in the Hanabi thread, pretty much he only forum game I'd be interested in would be Hanabi, because I think playing it in PbF would actually add to the experience in a way, whereas all the other games... I don't know, it seems like a hassle and a pain to keep up with to me.

Would Risk work? I haven't played it in probably 10 years so I don't remember the exact gameplay but I do remember that conquering the world is an awesome feeling.

As someone who played Risk with his friends just about every weekend for five years, Risk is actually a terrible game! Diplomacy is strictly superior, and we do play that on Forum Games.

I mean, if you want the success of your masterly crafted plan to come down to rolling three dice 100 times, then Risk is better.

I made my own Risk boards. I have a Lost board, a University of Michigan board, a China board. I made three "made-up fantastical realm" boards. I made a Mushroom Kingdom board and a Hyrule board. I added tons and tons of rules. I created a morale system, and items, and fortresses.

But it all comes down to those damn dice.

Have you played Risk: Legacy?

I think I half-played it once. Of the official Risk boards, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition board is pretty fun, although it is super biased in favor of defensive strategies.

Would I be able to run hanabi from a spoilered card list that's common to everyone?

Ill run it but I worry that if it takes mod intervention every move I'd slow the game down too much.

I would make a QT for each player that everyone has access to but them.  Other than that, I really don't know... drawing from the deck does get rather complicated.  I suppose a spoilered list could work.  Maybe number every card in the list so you can keep track of how far down you would go to see the next card.  Otherwise, it would be too easy to accidentally scroll over the wrong entry.

I'm really surprised there's no service to host a deck of arbitrary cards somewhere. At least I couldn't find any last I checked.
