Bond. James Bond.

This is something that nobody needs to know, but I'm going to tell you anyway. I'm a big James Bond fan, at least of the "official" Eon produced films. And thus, since I have nothing better to do, I'll now rank all 23 films in order from worst to best. Use this thread to make your own list, discuss the films or the books or anything else related to James Bond, but mainly just humor me because I've always wanted to make this list.

23 - Die Another Day
22 - On Her Majesty's Secret Service
21 - Moonraker
20 - Tomorrow Never Dies
19 - The World is Not Enough
18 - The Living Daylights
17 - Licence to Kill
16 - A View to a Kill
15 - Octopussy
14 - Quantum of Solace
13 - For Your Eyes Only
12 - Diamonds Are Forever
11 - Live & Let Die
10 - Skyfall
9 - The Man With the Golden Gun
8 - Casino Royale
7 - Goldeneye
6 - Thunderball
5 - From Russia With Love
4 - Dr. No
3 - The Spy Who Loved Me
2 - You Only Live Twice
1 - Goldfinger

How is Moonraker not last? Like, how is it not even last out of every movie made? It's so bad. Nothing happens. A little stereotypical Asian guy tries to assassinate him with a stick, he wear a funny gondolier hat, and then Jaws becomes his friend! Not to mention Jaws was already a pretty weak character as a villain, but now he's using his slow, easily avoided zombie bite to help Bond.

Little Asian guy? Are you thinking of Knick Knack from The Man With the Golden Gun? Moonraker's only saving grace is the tram fight with Jaws. Just like the only saving grace of Die Another Day is the sword fight. Come to think of it, there's nothing good in On Her Majesty's Secret Service so it should really be this:

23 - On Her Majesty's Secret Service
22/21 - Moonraker
22/21 - Die Another Day

I do like On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I seem to remember some awful winter sports effects at the end but that's more than compensated for by Diana Rigg. Lazenby is a decent Bond.

A lot of people put OHMSS near the top of their list and I don't understand it. Everything about the movie is wrong. The movie starts off with Bond breaking the fourth wall in a reference to Connery. Bond is undercover for the first half of the movie. That's not Bond's stye. Bond walks in, tells the villain his name, and proceeds to singlehandedly dismantle said villain's diabolical schemes. The other half of the movie Bond is running and hiding instead of fighting. Yes, Bond runs in a lot of other movies but he figures out some way to turn the tide. In Thunderball, for example, there's a big on foot chase scene. I think he even gets shot in the leg or something if I remember correctly. But he ends up meeting his pursuer face to face and gets the better of her.

Speaking of singlehandedly getting the job done, sometimes Bond has help. But in the end it's up to Bond to save the day. I don't remember the end of OHMSS exactly but I think Bond is transported by helicopter and works with a small army to destroy Blofeld's lair (speaking of which, this is the worst Blofeld) and never really definitively saves the day (I could be wrong about this). In Goldfinger Bond has the help of the US army, but it's he who kills Oddjob and stops an atomic bomb from going off. And I haven't even mentioned the marriage yet! Oh boy.

Oh right. Pretty forgettable, seeing as how I forgot about it. I do like Jaws however until he meets his girlfriend. Jaws in Egypt is badass as well as his escape from the underwater fortress thing at the end of The Spy Who Loved Me. I mean come on. He bites a shark and swims across the ocean.

Blofeld in OHMSS does have a cheap lair, but it does have Joanna Lumley and Catherine Schnell just as extras inside. That's quality.

You'll never hear me complain about Bond girls and that's one thing OHMSS has going for it. He gets laid twice in one night and still isn't satisfied.

I like Brosnan as Bond better than Moore, but there's no denying many of those were awful movies.  I haven't seen the Daniel Craig version of Bond.

Word. I like Brosnan too, just not his movies (besides Goldeneye). I slightly prefer Moore, at least his first three films.

Casino Royale is really good and I would highly recommend it.  I would rank it in the "high" tier along with Goldeneye and others, though not quite "top" tier with Goldfinger etc.

Casino Royale is quite good but the poker scene is so awful in so many ways.
The final hand where all of them have good hands, but Bond obviously has the straight flush is so ridiculous.
And dealers don't shuffle around the cards to show the players the actual hands they can make.

I think I like the opening scene from Casino Royale the most of the whole movie.

The stairway fight is pretty good too.

The poker scene would not be cool to non-poker players if it was realistic though. "I win with a King high, Mr. Le Chiffre."

But non-poker players don't understand what's going on anyway, but can still get the tension of the game. So they could have made it realistic and it would not have mattered for non-poker players.

I mean, I don't know Baccarat or Craps, but can find it thrilling to watch Bond play those games.

Maybe, but straight flush sounds better than King high. And most non-poker players still know roughly the hand order.

Well, I don't remember enough of the movies to make an actual list, but I do remember some epic scenes, so I'll make a list for that.

1. The beginning of Live and Let Die where the agent asks "Whose funeral is it?" and some guy standing next to him says "Yours" and then he gets killed and put into the casket they were carrying. At that point the music changes from sad to happy, it's such a classic scene,

Action at 2:36

2. The opening "parkour" or "free running" scene from Casino Royale

3. The ski chase from The Spy Who Loved Me

There are probably others that I might like better, but these were the ones I instantly remembered.

As classic as the ski chase and (especially) the jump are, I like the opening credit sequence better:

But I think Thunderball takes it for best song+opening sequence combo:

Followed closey by You Only Live Twice, but I might be putting this here just because the song is my favorite of all James Bond films:

My favorite song is Live and Let Die by the Wings followed closely by View to a Kill by Duran Duran.

I think Skyfall is also a pretty good song though.

Yeah Live and Let Die is classic and A View To a Kill is pretty catchy, although Im not a huge '80s fan.

Has anyone read any or all of the books? I'm slowly working my way through them.

Me and a couple of friends did a Bond marathon when Casino Royale was released on DVD. We graded all the movies by different categories and then calculated a total score through a formula that I don't remember. We graded, Intro song, Bond girls, Q-gadgets, chest hair, explosions and over all enjoyment. In the end I remember me agreeing a lot with the list. I don't have the list here, but I remember some of the moves' placements.

1. You Only Live Twice
2. Goldfinger
3. The Spy Who Loved Me
4. The Man With the Golden Gun
5. Die Another Day (This would've been higher if the guy who calculated everything din't take his bias into account when he wrote down the scores. ;))
A Bunch of Bond Movies
20. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
21. Tomorrow Never Dies

I really have to make my own list someday. Me and my girlfriend watched the first movies, but we took a break after Moonraker. Haven't gotten around to continue watching.

On a related note, anyone watching the new show Fleming?  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2647420/?ref_=nv_sr_1)  It looks kind of interesting but I only caught a few minutes of one of the episodes.

I just watched the trailer. It looks to be nothing like what Fleming's life actually was but whatever. It's TV!

I think some of the basic facts were true.  Like he was an intelligence officer during WWII (from Wikipedia):

While working for Britain's Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War, Fleming was involved in planning Operation Goldeneye and in the planning and oversight of two intelligence units, 30 Assault Unit and T-Force. His wartime service and his career as a journalist provided much of the background, detail and depth of the James Bond novels.

But of course the show is dramatized for entertainment.  Though while scanning through the message boards some say the character portrayed as Fleming in the show is some kind of representative of the inspirations for the Bond character.

So, basically, fiction inspired by his life.

It's TV!

Yes that's absolutely true, but as far as I know he was never in the "field" himself, but it would make pretty boring TV just to see a dude pushing papers all day.

The character is probably somewhere between the actual Fleming and James Bond.

My school's marching band played James Bond music last year, so while I have only seen Skyfall, I also know the theme songs to Goldfinger, Die Another Day, and Live and Let Die!

Ok. Since nobody asked, here are my top 5 James Bond themes:

#1: You Only Live Twice

#2: Goldfinger

#3: Live & Let Die

#4: Skyfall

#5: The Spy Who Loved Me

Honorable mentions:

The World is Not Enough
Thunderball
A View to a Kill

Slightly less honorable mentions:

Tomorrow Never Dies
Moonraker

Man that was a tough list. So much good music!

So, I just saw Skyfall for the first time ever last night. Having seen every other Bond at least once, I got to say.. I loved it. It doesn't seem fair to compare the Craig-area Bonds to the older movies, because earlier it seemed like they weren't even striving for a good movie, just for a good Bond movie, but still, this was probably my favorite of the bunch. Even better than Casino Royale, which is saying a lot. I hated Quantum of Solace, but this was really entertaining and great. Loved all the callbacks. The same theme applies to the theme songs as well, I liked this as a Bond-song but it's also something I could listen to without the movie.

I haven't seen all the Bond movies.

I haven't even seen most of the Bond movies.

I have seen some of the more recent Bond movies.

I am excited to see the next Bond movie.

Man. I had four strips of bacon yesterday. Was one automatically undercooked, one automatically overcooked? No, let's put a stop to that right here, all four strips were excellent.

I just finished reading Dr. No last night. It's so violent and dark bur it's also so mesmerizing, I got through the whole thing in a few days. I'm reading the books in order of publication and I think it's the best one so far.

I've been considering getting my hands on the original book series. I've heard a lot of good things.

Best 6 (in no order)
Goldeneye
Skyfall
Goldfinger
The Man With the Golden Gun
The Living Daylights
Moonraker - Controversial, but it was ambitious, it had spaceships and Jaws. Escape fantasty spy at its best.

Worst 6
Casino Royale awful plot settings and bad guys
Quantum of Solace - boring, too long, awful bad guys
Octopussy - Bond dressed as a clown
The World is Not Enough  - Yawn
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Yawn

I primarily look for:
Action
A tough bad guy (Quantum of Solace...I could have taken that guy in a fight)
Style
Gadgets

Casino Royale is quite good but the poker scene is so awful in so many ways.
The final hand where all of them have good hands, but Bond obviously has the straight flush is so ridiculous.
And dealers don't shuffle around the cards to show the players the actual hands they can make.

I think I like the opening scene from Casino Royale the most of the whole movie.

The stairway fight is pretty good too.

The poker scene would not be cool to non-poker players if it was realistic though. "I win with a King high, Mr. Le Chiffre."

I think it would be cool to build suspense by showing how a royal flush is possible, implying the villain has all he needs to do it (evil smile when the last needed flush card is revealed). And then it turns out he just bluffed, and Bond too, just Bond's cards are slightly better.
